If you are accustomed to keeping your smartphone with you (especially Android phone users), you may have heard of or downloaded and used the Clean Master security tool application developed by Cheetah Mobile. This free, safe and fast mobile application (App) has 100 million daily active users around the world.
This afternoon, I happened to have the opportunity to visit Snow Leopard Technology, the Taiwan agent of Clean Master, which allowed me to observe this fast-rising emerging company up close, and also tried to further understand Cheetah Mobile on the other side.
Speaking of which, this is not my first visit to Snow Leopard Technology. I am actually not unfamiliar with this company, which is located in the symbol of Taiwan (Taipei 101 Building) and aspires to become the first “mobile Internet company” in Taiwan. The superior environment on the 83rd floor, comfortable desks and chairs, elegant interior decoration, and free drinks and snacks make people feel a little dizzy on this hot summer day.
But what attracted me more was the passage on the wall, “Change the world, change Taiwan. @Fu Sheng”. To be honest, the moment I saw it, my inner feelings were a bit complicated. In Taiwan, there has never been a shortage of Steve Jobs (http://appleuser.com/2013/10/05/steve-jobs-2years/) believers. This group of entrepreneurs with the spirit of “whoever has something to do is the same” all hold the dream of “changing the world”; but once upon a time, did we need to rely on entrepreneurs from the other side of the Taiwan Strait to “change Taiwan”?
The corners of my mouth twitched slightly, and I smiled faintly. My friend YC who works at Snow Leopard greeted me politely. After we sat down in the corner by the window, the two of us started chatting about the history of the company’s partner Cheetah Mobile and their recently released financial report (http://finance.te chnews.tw/2015/05/21/cheetah-mobile/)──Overseas revenue reached RMB 260 million, a month-on-month growth of 84.2%, accounting for 38% of total revenue and 70% of mobile revenue.
This financial report for the first quarter as of the end of March this year shows that overseas markets are contributing more and more revenue (meaning it no longer relies solely on the mainland Chinese market), which is really not simple. Compared with the well-known giants such as BAT (Baidu, Alibaba and Tencent), which are still generally unable to leave China, Cheetah Mobile can rely on several of its apps to deliver such a report card, which should not be underestimated (http://www.fsdreamsquad.com/article_9.html).
Cheetah moves very quickly. As the world’s largest mobile tool developer, they are not complacent. Instead, they are actively extending their tentacles into different fields. For example, in March this year they just spent US$58 million to acquire MobPartner, a mobile advertising company in France. At that time, I paid attention to this news and speculated on the subsequent development. Today, it just confirms that Cheetah Mobile will officially enter the mobile advertising market with powerful apps such as Clean Master.
During the period, a friend also asked about the current situation of the [Taiwan E-commerce Entrepreneurship Association] (https://www.facebook.com/taiwanec.net), so they also talked about some of Cheetah’s plans to hold entrepreneurship competitions or mentor entrepreneurship in Taiwan. For example, the Cheetah Venture Fund is provided for Taiwanese new companies, as well as the motivation and process of establishing “Purple Cow Team” and so on.
Including high-paying talent recruitment and the provision of entrepreneurial funds, these issues have previously aroused widespread discussion in Taiwan’s Internet entrepreneurial circles. Today, as the boundaries of global geographical boundaries become increasingly blurred, the flow of talent and capital becomes more common.
I began to feel that if we don’t wear colored glasses or use stereotypes to view the delicate and sensitive relationship between the two sides, in fact, Fu Sheng or [Cheetah Mobile](https://udn.com/news/story/7240/837134-%E7%8D%B5%E8%B1%B9%E5%B0%87%E8%A 8%AD%E5%8F%B0%E7%81%A3%E5%88%86%E5%85%AC%E5%8F%B8%E3%80%8C%E5% BE%B5%E6%89%8D%E7%84%A1%E4%B8%8A%E9%99%90%E3%80%8D) This company is quite interesting. Even those [radical strategies] (http://www.cngulu.com/34423.html) mentioned by Fu Sheng may be viewed from different angles.
Halfway through the conversation, a young man suddenly walked over from outside in a hurry. After some pleasantries, we found out that he was [Vice President Jin Lei] from Cheetah Mobile (https://www.chinatimes.com/newspapers/20150309000016-260202). He looks to be in his early thirties, but he once served as the chief editor of well-known Chinese technology websites such as Sina Technology, NetEase Technology and TechWeb. Perhaps because he and I both had media backgrounds in the past, we started chatting quickly and exchanged many ideas about developing apps for Cheetah Mobile.
Vice President Jin mentioned that Cheetah Mobile will focus on the tool-type software market in the future and accelerate the development of various apps that are helpful to users. He used the term “tool matrix”, which impressed me deeply.
I’m curious about Cheetah Mobile’s product strategy: “Well, aren’t there just a few apps that everyone uses now? Why does Cheetah continue to develop them instead of integrating them into one?”
Vice President Jin said that there is still a need for apps to adapt to the times and local conditions. For example, people may worry that after lending their phones to friends, others will take the opportunity to peek at their text messages or photos. Therefore, Cheetah has added an AppLock function to the CM Security app, so that people can lend their phones to others without worrying about their personal information being leaked.
Later, because the Cheetah team found that this function was very popular in the market, they independently developed the CM Locker App. After its launch, it immediately caused a sensation in the Indian market, which shows that there is indeed a local demand for it.
Not only did he talk about his own product strategy, Vice President Jin also had unique and keen observations as a media person on the current entrepreneurial environment and the development of the mobile Internet.
He mentioned that the mobile Internet in mainland China is developing very rapidly. Whether it is watching movies or taking a taxi, you can rely on apps on your mobile phone to achieve O2O. Even if you go out without a wallet, you can still use WeChat Wallet to pay in convenience stores. As for grabbing red envelopes on WeChat during the Chinese New Year, or shopping directly at your fingertips, that’s no problem.
In contrast, in Taiwan, both the size of the new startup team and the speed of app development seem to be lower than expected.
He was puzzled as to why there were long queues to watch movies in Taiwan, which made me a little embarrassed. In fact, I had a similar negative experience: For example, I used a MacBook Air to book tickets on the Guobin Cinemas website. Perhaps it was due to the fact that the website was built using Silverlight (https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Silverlight). I had trouble even entering my account number, and I often had to use the copy-paste method to do it. It was really inhumane.
“Why do you use such a remote (unpopular) technology?” Vice President Jin’s words left me speechless.
Not to mention “[Maoyan Movies](http:/ /www.maoyan.com/)” App has taken the matter of buying movie tickets to the extreme, and was even called by the media on the other side as “changing the development of the film industry” (http://it.sohu.com/20150425/n411868262.shtml).
The “Maoyan Movie” App is hailed as the annual ticket purchase tool by Chinese netizens. Its seat selection function is simple and easy to use, and is highly praised by Chinese netizens. In March this year alone, “Maoyan Movie” sold nearly 30 million tickets. According to statistics, for every three movie tickets sold in China, one is from Maoyan Movies.
This small App not only brought huge business opportunities and amazing consumption data to Meituan.com, but also changed the structure of the entire industrial ecosystem. Leisure and entertainment should have been Taiwan’s strength, but now I have to ask an entrepreneur from the other side to criticize the shortcomings of Warner Village Roadshow and other cinemas in front of me. Well, it’s emotional to think about it.
I talked with Vice President Jin for almost an hour, and it was a very pleasant conversation. When leaving Taipei 101, I couldn’t help but take a look at this towering building. Thinking about myself who is also looking for a direction, and then looking at the entrepreneurial friends around me, my mood at this moment should be surging, excited, but also somewhat complicated, right?
It’s three o’clock in the afternoon, and the sun is shining brightly. I strolled to the nearby Eslite Xinyi Bookstore to see if there were any interesting new books on the market recently? After browsing the newly established simplified Chinese book section on the third floor, I ended up walking to the magazine section on the second floor, where I happened to see the latest issue of “Business Weekly”.

I am not very interested in the 1437th [Cover Story] (https://www.businessweekly.com.tw/EMagMainPage.aspx?id=2275), but I hastily opened the “Shopping Mall Self-Slow School” column to see what Mr. He Feipeng, CEO of City State Group, wrote? This time, what interesting observations or thought-provoking workplace fables have been brought to us?
“Shopping Mall Self-Slow School” column is a must-read unit for me in every issue. I stood and read it while reading “I Waiting for your beloved, you go to a distant place to ask for marriage” This column of a thousand words shocked me. CEO He mentioned that he recently went to mainland China to give a speech. While waiting at the airport, he had a conversation with a Taiwanese cadre stationed in China. The cadre told CEO He that his girlfriend met on “Momo” and planned to propose to her this year.
This story is very real and close to the current situation in Taiwan. I felt very emotional while reading it, and I couldn’t help but think about the process of getting acquainted and interacting with my girlfriend. But the point is not here, but that I actually found a typo in CEO He’s column!
Maybe you will say, what’s the big deal about typos? There are typos in the subtitles of our TV news every day, and there are even people on Facebook who have set up a group to record (and ridicule) the news that reporters have written incorrectly!
But to be honest, I was really sad when I saw a typo in Business Week. I want to believe that maybe CEO He, who is busy with everything, has never heard of Momo, a social app before, but for Business Weekly, which bills itself as “Taiwan’s most influential business and financial magazine”, haven’t even the editorial team heard of Momo?
This reminds me of reading the “Taiwan Mobile Game Market White Paper” produced by [GuoHe Mobile Advertising Platform] (http://www.guohead.com/home.html) earlier today. When the online media on the other side know about Bahamut, PTT and PChome, Taiwan’s leading financial media does not even know about Momo?
Beijing Momo Technology is not a fledgling startup team on the 36Kr website! Although this social app was launched in August 2011, it is jokingly called the “magic tool for hooking up” by many Chinese netizens, but in recent years it has also attracted many good couples to enter the hall.
On December 11, 2014, Momo was listed on the NASDAQ exchange in the United States. The current number of active users has reached 78.1 million. Even though some people still look down upon this “magic hook-up tool”, I have to say that the Momo team led by Tang Yan is also very powerful.
Typos are not just typos. Instead of blaming computer input or rushed homework as the cause of the error, perhaps it is better to return to the original intention and calmly think and review.
In the evening, I kept thinking about this. Looking back on the past when I was working at the “Digital Times” magazine, I would pay special attention to whether there were typos every time I wrote an article. This was not only responsible for the readers, but also responsible for myself. Occasionally when I see typos in magazines, I always feel particularly ashamed and ashamed. I also remind my colleagues to learn lessons and avoid making the same mistake again.
Whether it is the well-known BAT and Xiaomi Technology, or the Cheetah Mobile and Momo Technology mentioned in this article, do you think that the rise of these “Internet companies” on the other side is only due to the opportunities of market size or the demographic dividend? Are you really just standing in the wind, even pigs can fly?
Early this morning, I shared the Internet Queen [Mary Meek] (https://www.bnext.com.tw/article/view/id/36381) (Mary Meeker)‘s latest 2015 Internet Trends Report. As a result, I also heard a friend say, “It feels like this report has been advertised on WeChat.” Suddenly I felt like I didn’t know what to say.
Well, Cheetah Mobile, which wants to change Taiwan, and the unfamiliar “Business Weekly” made me fall into endless long exams on this hot Thursday night.
