[Cool People] is a newly launched column on the “Writing Cool” website. Vista interviews friends who have performed wonderfully in different fields such as life, work and study. As the saying goes, “stones from other mountains can be used to attack jade.” I hope that by observing the diverse lives of these cool people, we can be inspired and improve ourselves.

The transformation path from chemical industry to catering e-commerce

Q1. I have known Akang for a long time, and I feel that using slash or crossover is not enough to describe him. Could you first briefly introduce your academic background to everyone? What labels can you use to describe yourself? And, what have you been busy with recently?

I am a person with a background in science and engineering but with a literary soul. Friends who are not familiar with me may think that I am a very logical person who speaks and reacts quickly. But my heart is actually often full of conflicts between rationality and sensibility. I rely on my strong sense of self-training over the years to reconcile them very well.

I studied chemical engineering from a vocational school to university, but I never liked it. Instead, I spent a lot of time in school reading novels and playing coffee.

When I started looking for a job after being discharged from the army, I fell into confusion. I tried to apply for many jobs but all failed. I even stayed at home because of frustration. Therefore, the period when I entered society was not very smooth. Fortunately, I relied on reading a lot of novels and listening to music to survive this period.

Later, I was lucky enough to rely on part-time jobs and some financial support from friends and seniors, until I joined a Sino-Japanese joint venture chemical company as a domestic salesperson for chemical raw materials. Strictly speaking, this job was my real first job, and it helped me a lot - it allowed me to adapt to the workplace and gain a buffer into society. I worked in this company for six years and accumulated a lot of sales, negotiation skills, business knowledge, and market research capabilities.

Later, in his thirties, I finally had the ability to find myself again. Fortunately, through a friend’s introduction, I joined a restaurant and entered the catering industry. This experience was actually very short, but it gave me a lot of courage.

Because I was completely immersed in an unfamiliar industry, the nature of the work was also very different from the past. In the process, I had to find ways to survive and adapt, which actually accelerated my growth. Of course, this also gave me a completely different imagination about work and life.

Later, due to the boss’s concession, I joined another business of the boss: an Internet company specializing in app development, and began to serve as the chairman’s special assistant and product manager. However, the actual work content in the early stage is very similar to “operations” and “general management”… almost everything has to be done by myself. There is often no standard to refer to for the tasks assigned, or colleagues to ask for advice. At the same time, there is always a lack of resources, so I have to find ways to find them on my own. Looking back now, it feels a lot like starting a business.

After working for two years, I resigned and joined the company started by my senior, which is [Addiction Technology] (https://www.cool3c.com/). There I began to be responsible for the management of the e-commerce department, as well as platform operations and sales. My boss is a very special person and he gives us a lot of room to play. Even after I had been working for three or four years, we began to encourage us to start our own businesses and find topics that we were interested in doing. I later found a partner who was better than me, and together we founded the company MOOC.

I started running my own company, whose main business was to provide online course production, sales and platform operation services. The company lasted for about two years and made me the first pot of gold in my life. Later, my partner decided to go to China to work hard and transferred the company to me.

Looking back on the two years since I started my business, the biggest gain is that I discovered that I am actually not suitable to be a boss. Instead, I perform better when I am helping others work! I actually didn’t expect this at the beginning, but it’s really important to be able to recognize the path that suits you early.

At the same time, because of my previous experience as a supervisor in Addict Technology, I discovered that I really like coaching subordinates or helping customers with lessons. Therefore, this is also the reason why I decided to gradually downsize the company, join the ranks of “one-person companies”, become a freelance worker, and engage in marketing consulting.

The above process is probably my experience in the workplace for more than ten years.

Manage personal brand and blog

Q2. When did you start running the blog “学长阿康”? Why do you want to write about this topic?

Probably starting from January 2018? At that time, I just felt that although I usually wrote some records of my emotions, I didn’t have a place that truly belonged to me, where I could accumulate my thoughts and words for a long time, so I felt a bit regretful.

At the same time, I also realized that if you want to become a freelance worker, building a personal brand will be a key point, and writing is the easiest way to start. Therefore, I spent an hour taking a WordPress course, immediately set up the website, and started writing.

The topics I wrote at the beginning were very fragmentary, and I wrote whatever came to mind. Most of them were records or thoughts about daily life or work. Later, I gradually began to focus on writing the content of “reading notes”, mainly because there were many friends around me who loved reading, and I also loved reading, so I began to write a lot of content in this area.

Q3. How often is “Learning Chang A’kang” written? What do you hope to achieve through this blog?

For a while, the frequency of updates was maintained once a day, but this year I started to be busy with starting classes and raising funds as a marketing consultant, so it probably changed to about once a week.

When I first started writing, I had only one small goal, which was to get the opportunity to “write book reviews or recommendations for publishers” and “obtain public relations books for free.” Because I love reading, I spend a lot of money on books every year! Therefore, if you can get a bunch of books to read because of your writing, I think this is a very beautiful thing in life.

After a year, this wish finally came true.

The next small goals should be to focus on writing about the topics of “fundraising marketing” and “learning methods”. This is mainly related to the trial start of courses at the end of this year. Looking at the medium term of three to five years, I hope that the content of this blog can inspire more friends who love learning as much as I do.

Q4. From your point of view, how should you write about your reading experience so that it is both exciting and key points? How do you practice writing? Are there any methods or techniques you can share with everyone?

In fact, what I wrote at the beginning was really just for myself, so I didn’t have a target audience. At the same time, in terms of the structure of the article, it is actually very difficult to read.

Later, some friends began to ask me to add more content after reading the article. Only then did I realize that what I wrote was actually being noticed.

In my opinion, a good reading experience must grasp three key points:

  1. Find the highlights in the book.
  2. Write down your feedback and experiences.
  3. Give readers suggestions for further action.

I feel that I have achieved the first and second points so far, and the third point is my next goal.

In addition, a new writing method I recently learned is a method I learned from the book “Extreme Writing” - “voice writing”. In other words, using the “reading” method to write through the speech-to-text input method can greatly speed up your writing. However, although the principle is simple, it is not easy to implement. I have been practicing since early September and I think the effect is very good. If you are interested, you can try it!

The professional journey of fundraising marketing consultant

Q5. Could you please talk about the consulting work of “fund-raising marketing”? What is the specific content? Do you have any interesting experiences you can share?

What I mainly provide is “overall marketing planning” and “project management advice” consulting services before and after fundraising, which is suitable for companies that already have relevant manpower (for example: marketing, design, PM and editors, etc.) and want to manage group fundraising projects themselves but have no experience.

So far, I have done course-based fundraising and product-based fundraising, and both have achieved good results. If you want to know more, you can refer to this link.

What’s special this year is that I’m working on an “exhibition type” fundraising project, and I’ve also started to provide free coaching on “charitable” fundraising projects. I hope I can contribute what I’ve learned to society and help more people. By the way, I recently received a public welfare case.

For me, the biggest challenge for both types of projects is the lack of marketing resources. Therefore, it is very necessary to rely on various interpersonal networks, creative ideas and community operations; of course, this process is also a new learning for me.

Q6. In addition to the blog “Xue Chang A Kang”, do you also operate other social media or websites? How is time allocated?

I run a club that recommends books and helps people find books, called “Book Detective”. Because visiting bookstores is my hobby, and I often help my friends find books and make book lists for others, I originally established this club because I wanted to help more people.

Q7. Could you please talk about the newly launched “[For those on the rise in the career stage: Learning methodologies to accelerate personal growth] (https://www.pressplay.cc/learningsystem)”? What kind of subscription service is this? Why do you want to launch this course? What problem do you want to help you solve?

Well, this is a course I’m starting to plan for later this year. The reason why I want to start this class is as mentioned above. In my past experience, I had a period of confusion in my life, and every time I changed jobs, changed jobs, or crossed over to a different field, I would face the pain of returning to zero and having to learn again. How to accelerate myself to stand firm as soon as possible has always been a very important topic for me.

And since 2008, I started organizing book clubs with my friends because of my love for reading. So far, we have probably held hundreds of online and offline book club activities. During this process, I also found that many young friends, like me in the past, are very eager to improve themselves through learning and accelerate their personal career development. Finally, it is also because my later personal entrepreneurial and investment projects were mainly related to “technological education” and “knowledge services”. Therefore, while planning, selling and operating these services, I gradually mastered course planning and operation methods, and actually saw various learning difficulties faced by working people. Therefore, I began to sort out my past experiences and skills I had learned, and summarized a set of learning methods suitable for working people to practice, hoping to help more friends get out of trouble.

Overall, this subscription project is a one-year learning course. The content of each major topic is related to each other. We hope to help everyone develop their self-learning ability through “systematic learning methods” and “long-term and regular companionship”.

Learning suggestions for professionals

Q8. Regarding writing and marketing skills that are in great demand among office workers, can Akang provide you with some learning suggestions?

If you are not used to writing every day, I think there is a technique for practicing writing, which is one of the most useful ways to get started that I have learned in the past few years, and that is “When posting on Facebook, force yourself to say something meaningful.”

To put it simply, when forwarding an article, you should at least add one or two sentences of your own opinions. To be honest, although I don’t do this 100% of the time, I try to remind myself of it. I feel like being able to express my point of view helps me a lot.

Q9. Can you share a few blogs, websites or podcasts that you like? How many other books are worth reading?

I actually rarely read blogs now because I spend all my time reading books. However, there are a few blogs that I read regularly, such as “Computer Playthings” related to work skills, time management, or note-taking methods, and “Greenhorn Finance Footnote” related to ETF investment.

I rarely listen to podcasts, but I have bought a lot of courses on the well-known Chinese knowledge service app “get”. My favorites are the columns or courses by Wu Jun, Liu Run and Wanweigang.

In addition, the books I have read in the past two years and made me feel that I have learned a lot can inspire you to acquire a new cognitive framework “[Principles: Life and Work](https://www.books.com.tw/exep/assp.php/vista/products/0010782941?utm_source=vista&ut m_medium=ap-books&utm_content=recommend&utm_campaign=ap-201910)”, “Leap about improving personal learning methods ts/0010783076?utm_source=vista&utm_medium=ap-books&utm_content=recommend&utm_campaign=ap-201910)” and “Traffic Pool related to digital marketing topics s.com.tw/exep/assp.php/vista/products/0010802905?utm_source=vista&utm_medium=ap-books&utm_content=recommend&utm_campaign=ap-201910)》.

Q10. Can you recommend some useful tools, software or online services that you like or worth recommending?

For those who like to read e-books, I recommend you to use the “[Duokan Reading] (https://www.duokan.com/)” App. The TTS (Text to Speech) and automatic “Simplified to Traditional” functions it provides are of great help to me and can also speed up the reading effect. In addition, Onyx Boox NOTE+ is the most satisfactory e-book reader I have ever used.

If you love writing and want to improve your typing speed and experience, I think it is worth investing a little money to buy a good mechanical keyboard. However, if you are just starting out like me and want to get started, you can try this [K61M RGB mechanical keyboard] from irocks (http://www.i-rocks.com.tw/web/product/product_in.jsp?pd_no=PD1562567821618%26lang=tw). I think its CP value is very high.
