Let’s start with the predictions of future scholars

My dream is the life of a creator, not a creator. The easiest way to practice writing is to write on a blog.

In the late 1980s, when I was studying science, I felt uneasy about the future. Therefore, I read Alvin. Toffler and John. Books by futurists such as Nesby. They unanimously predicted that the 21st century would be an era of globalization and informationization. They believe that the development of communications, transportation, and trade will lead to the simplification of the market, and the development of information machinery will realize informatization. Therefore, I think that English application skills will become an important tool if we want to enter the world market and exchange information. So I studied English seriously. Thanks to this, I later joined a foreign company.

In 1994, I loved reading self-improvement books for office workers. At that time, I read a book with a very surprising title - “The Era of Lifetime Employment Is About to Disappear.” This is a book written by a Japanese economist that is now out of print. Since his prophecies have come true, the book’s purpose is lost. The book writes that the period of high economic growth from the 1970s to the 1980s was a special situation in the process of economic growth, and an era of slow economic growth will come, and the number of bankrupt companies will gradually increase. He believes that especially those who believe that the company will take care of everything and are serious about their work will be driven out on the street the moment the company collapses. He suggested that everyone should not be satisfied with being an office worker, but must become an expert in order to survive in the working world.

The trend at that time was that the first job was a lifelong career; in the era of lifelong employment, I suddenly felt uneasy at the thought of making a living as a salesperson. Because, I think it’s a bit inadequate to call a salesperson an expert. So in order to become an expert, I went to the Institute of Interpretation at the University of Foreign Studies to study. The “lifelong career is about to disappear” predicted in the book suddenly became a reality four years later, during the Asian financial crisis at the end of 1997. In 1998, I heard that my former company was also undergoing organizational restructuring, and the junior who took over my position had to leave the company during the organizational restructuring process. Therefore, we cannot trust the company.

The end of work and knowledge producers

In 1995, when I was still studying at the Institute of Interpretation, I watched Jeremy. “The End of Work” by Rifkin. The industrial revolution of the 19th century resulted in the replacement of human labor by machines, while the information revolution of the 20th century will usher in an era in which human thinking work will be replaced by computers. So, will the 21st century be the first utopia in history where humans are liberated from labor? Or will there be a dystopia in which a small number of capitalists occupy production equipment and the majority of human beings are excluded from labor?

Rifkin had already made an astonishing prediction at the time. He said that in the near future, automatic translation machines or automatic interpretation programs would be born, and the profession of interpreters would disappear. After reading his book, I became troubled. What jobs will survive in the future? Rifkin said that instead of being a secondary producer or transmitter of knowledge, it is better to become the primary producer of knowledge. Perhaps the translation of novels may be replaced by automatic translation programs, but the creation of novels is a unique field of mankind and it will survive for a long time. If the 20th century is the era of movable type printing civilization, then the 21st century is the era of image media. Because of this sentence, I changed my track and became an image media producer - PD.

I think the reason I have been able to live happily as a PD for the past twenty years is because I followed the advice in this book. If there was Alvin in the 1980s. Toffler, in the 1990s it was Jeremy. Rifkin, then now is the era of Harari. Harari made an even more startling prediction.

In the nineteenth century, the Industrial Revolution created a vast urban proletariat. This new working class brought unprecedented needs, hopes, and fears to which no other creed could effectively respond, and socialism expanded. In the end, liberalism defeated socialism by absorbing the essence of socialism. In the twenty-first century, what we may see is a new and huge group of jobless classes: this group of human beings have no economic, political or artistic value, and have no contribution to the prosperity, strength and glory of society. This “useless class” is not just unemployed, but has no job at all.

Future scholars predict that there are two upcoming changes in the future, namely increases in life expectancy and unemployment. This means that we are a generation that must play for a long time. After retirement, what should we do to spend that long time?

When I was learning English in the 1990s, in order to find listening materials for English conversations, I would record interesting situational dramas on video tapes while watching AFKN, such as “Happy Bachelor Party”, “Party of Six” and “I’m Mad About You”. I would record the plots of these dramas that I particularly liked for my collection. I will take advantage of the scheduled recording function, but sometimes the broadcast will be stopped midway due to changes in the broadcast time. If I was eating out at that time, as soon as the show time came, I would run home and press the record button at the same time as the show started. In this way, I collected hundreds of video tapes, but I had no time to watch them again because there were always new plots unfolding later. Recently, it has become possible to watch American dramas on the Internet using video streaming services or on IPTV. So I thought: “All the hard work of recording before was in vain. Now I can just sit at home and easily find old American TV series to watch.”

Active creation is better than passive appreciation

While there are more choices than ever before, it actually seems harder to choose mindfully. Because there are too many options to choose from, there is not enough time to concentrate. Because there are so many interesting things in this world, if you want to appreciate other people’s works, you have to be nervous from the selection stage. And then, once you get used to it, it can become numbing. Now, it’s time to make something interesting ourselves. Since we have to play for a long time, instead of passively appreciating, active creation is more fun, and we can also grow through active creation.

If you open the book “The Great Destiny of Mankind”, you will see a sentence written by Harari himself at the front.

Everything changes.

“All things change.” This is the only unchanging truth. All things will change. We are about to enter a time of change. What do we do when the world changes? When a wave hits, instead of trembling with fear, I want to take out my surfboard with trembling emotions and become a surfer; since it is a big wave, instead of falling into the water and panicking, I want to swim in the water to my heart’s content. Not only do I want to swim to my heart’s content, I also want to open the shells in the sea and look for the pearls hidden inside. Today, I still think about that coming wave, reading and writing in the mood of wiping a surfboard.

Harari predicted that we are “Homo deus” (God-men), which means we will dream of a life as creators. But my dream is the life of a creator, not a creator. The easiest way to practice creating is to write on a blog. The easiest way for anyone to live as a creator is to blog.
