How can a designer write a popular article in just three months? (superior)

Thank you for authorizing the “Content Hacker” website to reprint, and I would like to express my gratitude.
[Why we repost this article] If you want to be a slash youth these days, it seems that you have to start by “writing a blog”. Chofy Lin is obviously a designer, but her writing is quite popular, and it even seems to override her main business. Chofy generously shared her blog management experience. Preface
To be honest, when I wrote “[How I wrote explosive articles on Medium](https://medium.com/%E8%83%8C%E5%9C%B0%E8%A3%A1%E7%9A%84%E8%BA%AB%E5%88%86%E5%85%B6%E5 %AF%A6%E6%98%AF%E4%B8%80%E4%BD%8D%E5%B9%B3%E9%9D%A2%E8%A8%AD%E8%A8%88%E5%B8%AB/medium-%E5%AF%AB%E4%BD%9C%E4%B8%89 %E5%80%8B%E6%9C%88%E5%BF%83%E5%BE%97%E5%A0%B1%E5%91%8A-%E6%88%91%E5%A6%82%E4%BD%95%E5%9C%A8-medium-%E5%AF%AB%E5%8 7%BA%E4%BA%86%E7%AF%87%E7%AF%87%E7%88%86%E6%96%87-%E4%B8%8A-9479b2ef5eed)”, the author actually hesitated for a long time. After all, the shame required to claim that “every article is a explosive article” is really very high. Please hold back your desire to complain and allow me to explain the origin of this article.
The author’s [first article](https://medium.com/%E8%83%8C%E5%9C%B0% E8%A3%A1%E7%9A%84%E8%BA%AB%E5%88%86%E5%85%B6%E5%AF%A6%E6%98%AF%E4%B8%80%E4%BD%8D%E5%B9%B3%E 9%9D%A2%E8%A8%AD%E8%A8%88%E5%B8%AB/%E9%96%8B%E7%AF%87-%E6%9B%B8%E5%AF%AB-%E9%80%99%E4%BB%B6 %E4%BA%8B%E6%83%85%E4%B8%8A%E7%9A%84%E6%88%91-59aa5e3d234e), started on February 1st of this year (2018), and the most recent article was on May 4th. In other words, the author’s writing career lasted nearly three months. When I first started using Medium, there were about 250 followers. Three months later, the number of followers increased to about 1,300.
What really caught my attention was this situation:
Within three months, the author wrote a total of 14 articles. Among them, 11 articles had more than 1,000 claps; that is to say, only 3 articles had less than 1,000 claps.
There is nothing special about writing an article that exceeds a thousand beats. There are many [authors] (https://medium.com/@vista) who are followed by many people on Medium, and they can easily write articles with extremely high claps.
However, with only about a thousand followers and only three months to go before I started writing, the author has reached the point where almost every article has received more than a thousand claps──it seems unusual. Additional note: Around mid-April, the number of people following me on Medium had just exceeded 1,000.
This result aroused the author’s curiosity, so I decided to use myself as a case study to study the three-month writing process. I hope I can figure out how I got here and make some interesting discoveries!
First, about why you started writing Medium
I believe that most of the readers who follow the author on Medium do not know the author’s background - a graphic designer who takes on freelance projects. But why should graphic designers join the writing bandwagon? This matter requires additional explanation.
The author decided to start writing on Medium mainly for three reasons:
1. Self-certification of “writing ability”:
Although the author’s current full-time job is as a graphic designer, I graduated from the Chinese Department of University. I have loved words and literature since I was a child, and I know that I have considerable writing ability. “Design” was another interest that developed during college, so I later went astray and became a graphic designer.
In summary, the author knows that he has a good foundation to invest in writing business. In fact, because he has been recording his life on his personal Facebook for a long time, he was mistakenly regarded as a “blogger”. Netizens even mistakenly believe that design work is my part-time job, which is really dumbfounding.
A record of achievement that went astray
Prior to this, although I wrote a lot of diaries on Facebook, I had not written long articles or literary works seriously for a long time. Just saying “I can write” to others is not convincing. Understand that you must have a portfolio.
Therefore, I decided to start blogging. On the one hand, I want to try to see if I can still write. On the other hand, I want to completely record all my thoughts and leave a formal collection of written works.
2. Strengthen characteristic differentiation and find breakthroughs for development:
From the previous description, we can roughly understand the background differences between the author and other designers.
As we all know, Taiwan’s design contract market is quite competitive. To survive in the case-taking market, one must not only have a certain degree of practical ability, but more importantly, be able to run a personal brand—that is, find a “reason why they should choose you” for consumers.
In order to achieve this goal, efforts should be made to shape personal characteristics. The author then thought: My design may not be more exciting than others, but my thinking and logic are more rigorous than others. The fact that “can write” proves this characteristic in some aspects. Therefore, the author tries to highlight and emphasize this characteristic until it can be remembered.
There is nothing special about “an author who is good at writing”, and “a designer who is good at designing” seems natural. However, the label of “designer who is good at writing” makes me stand out from the vast group of designers. This may be the real value and significance of slash youth.
3. Establish a personal brand and invest in platform management:
The person who really pushed me to start writing was Quanshi Digital CEO [Lu Zijun] (https://www.facebook.com/tclu513). He published the following post at the end of January. On impulse that night, the author stayed up late and wrote the first article on Medium.
The beginning proved to be well worth it.
The record of Lu Zijun’s pitfall
As a designer, what I usually invest in my business is a fan club or a website for my work. However, as the reach of Facebook fan pages continues to decrease, running a fan group has become an unreliable option. In addition, if I learn from other designers, would it be the best investment to focus on running a personal website? Please note that the author is not denying that designers should run portfolios, but is just thinking about whether there are other ways to help personal brands.
The author’s conclusion is: If you want to invest, then do something that is better than other designers, and that thing is──“writing”. In addition to the basic functions of a blog, Medium is also developing a community with potential. In this community, “designers” account for a large base, which is in line with the author’s professional background, so I chose Medium as the platform to operate. In addition, Medium’s author paywall plan and good SEO effects are also factors that the author considers.
As for the specific benefits brought by Medium, we will also summarize it next.
Medium Writing Strategies
After I started writing on Medium, I immediately received a very good response, which aroused my interest in the platform, and I began to face writing with the attitude of “observation” and “testing”. Therefore, the author’s writing strategy is actually “writing with a purpose.”
The following four articles are listed as case studies:
Beginning: Self-introduction of family status
[](https://medium.com/%E8%83 %8C%E5%9C%B0%E8%A3%A1%E7%9A%84%E8%BA%AB%E5%88%86%E5%85%B6%E5%AF %A6%E6%98%AF%E4%B8%80%E4%BD%8D%E5%B9%B3%E9%9D%A2%E8%A8%AD%E8%A8% 88%E5%B8%AB/%E9%96%8B%E7%AF%87-%E6%9B%B8%E5%AF%AB-%E9%80%99%E4% BB%B6%E4%BA%8B%E6%83%85%E4%B8%8A%E7%9A%84%E6%88%91-59aa5e3d234e)
- Test: What kind of feedback can you get on the new platform?
- Goal: Guide followers on Facebook to the new platform
This is the author’s first article published on Medium. When I started writing the first article, basically no one would read my personal page. The readers were all still on Facebook. The first thing I had to do was:
- Tell everyone on Facebook “My blog is open!” Please come here to support me!
- Tell native readers on Medium “who I am and why I started writing here”
Therefore, the first article I wrote was to talk about my relationship with “writing” and why I did this. When a character in an opera appears on the stage, he must first perform a “self-reporting” move.
The purpose of this is to operate based on personal brand. Looking deeper, for readers who have just met the author on the Medium platform, this opening article may not be appealing or meaningful. However, if the reader is a follower or friend who has been supporting from Facebook, then the meaning of this article will be completely different, and there will be an atmosphere of “Oh, my friend is starting a blog, go support it!”
In other words, this article is written for “specific people”, and the target audience is the group of relatives and friends. The result?
The result is: the first article, the number of claps exceeded one thousand
This number of claps is surprising. Because this is an article that is neither practical nor artistic or technical, it is basically just the author’s autobiography of his growth.
The author’s idea is that not everyone who writes a self-report on Medium can get such a response. To be honest, in this huge crowd and the explosion of information, who would want to listen to an unknown stranger talk about his or her life? But ultimately, this result is attributed to the author’s pre-set goal: “to attract followers on Facebook to the new platform.” Therefore, readers who clap hands are mostly relatives, friends and long-term followers. Only they will be interested in the author’s stories.
The first goal was achieved, what next? Friends began to spread the Medium blog content for me; new people began to know me, and the first step was successfully launched.
Target readers and challenge using subscripts to win

- Test: use intuition to identify keywords that may attract attention, and test specific themes and responses
- Goal: Accumulate readers with design background

Excluding the opening chapter, this is the beginning of officially running a personal blog.
This article started to determine the direction of the blog. What is the author going to talk about? What might you write next?
Undoubtedly, since the author’s specialty is to be a designer, the most important thing to talk about is design. Before this, the author had no concept of how to write on Medium, so I could only rely on personal intuition and habits.
The author has a writing characteristic, that is, the titles are always longer than others. This matter is not necessarily good or bad, and it is not necessarily worth learning from. Maybe there will be professional editors who criticize that it should not be written like this. But my idea is very simple. I just think that most readers will decide whether to click on the article based on the title, so I want to fully present the selling point of the article in the title and tell others what is in it. Of course, if the reader can’t even finish reading the title, then don’t force it. After all, the author’s content is longer than others.
Therefore, subscripting has become a very important thing.
The author intuitively picked out several [keywords] (https://www.contenthacker.today/2018/01/hot-topic-frog-game.html) that may attract readers’ attention, including: “design”, “quotation”, “during the year”, “(increase) annual income”. The setting of this type of title reveals some information, such as:
- The article mentions the design quotation that designers are most concerned about, because many designers don’t know how to quote when accepting a project.
- Share how to increase the quotation and even increase the overall “annual income”.
- Not only talk about how to increase income, but also how to increase it within one year. (implies fast)
At this point, the author believes that combining keywords is also a problem. For example, the author once hesitated between three sets of titles:
- A. Some thoughts on design quotation, and how I successfully tripled my quotation and annual income in one year.
- B. Some thoughts on design quotation, and how I successfully increased my quotation and annual income in one year
- C. Some thoughts on design quotation, and how I successfully increased my quotation and income in one year
The difference between these three groups of article titles mainly lies in the choice of the last paragraph. In terms of sensationalism, “triple annual income” seems very strong, but it always seems too ostentatious and even a bit annoying. It must be admitted that the last two titles have the same flavor, but the intensity is much weaker; maybe some people will be fussy and chase me to figure out where the triple annual income comes from.
“Wanting to be noticed, but not being too obnoxious” becomes an important point to consider.
At the same time, in terms of the “annual income” and “income” of B and C, the word “income” is a bit too restrained and unattractive. “Annual income” refers to one year’s income, which is a long period of time; “income” may only refer to one time or one month. In other words, when the author uses “annual income”, it will give people the feeling that “the income has increased throughout the year” and “the whole year has been good.”
Although the reading is only slightly different, the feeling is actually very different. This is called Lianci. At this point, everyone wonders if you have discovered the author’s nitpicking? Because every word used will bring a completely different feeling to the readers. The difference in results actually comes from the stacking of details.
Having said too much, let’s just look at the results…
This article received 9,400 claps and was reposted 140 times on my personal Facebook (the original post is below).
This article was fortunately successful because it was heavily forwarded to various communities and shared by celebrity designers. The diffusion power of the community spreads the article beyond imagination, and this effect is not what one can expect.
But if we talk about whether the author did anything right, then it must be that the title hit the target audience’s pain points to a considerable extent!
Develop potential readers and test new content topics:
[](https://medium.com/%E8%8 3%8C%E5%9C%B0%E8%A3%A1%E7%9A%84%E8%BA%AB%E5%88%86%E5%85%B6%E5%AF%A6%E6%98%AF%E4%B8 %80%E4%BD%8D%E5%B9%B3%E9%9D%A2%E8%A8%AD%E8%A8%88%E5%B8%AB/%E6%88%80%E4%BA%BA%E7%B 5%AE%E8%AA%9E-%E5%A6%82%E6%9E%9C%E6%88%91%E5%80%91%E7%9F%A5%E9%81%93%E7%82%BA%E4%B B%80%E9%BA%BC%E6%84%9B%E4%BA%BA-%E9%82%A3%E9%BA%BC%E6%98%AF%E5%90%A6%E4%B9%9F%E5% B0%B1%E7%9F%A5%E9%81%93%E8%A9%B2%E5%A6%82%E4%BD%95%E4%B8%8D%E6%84%9B-6e798a5c6cf8)
- Test: In addition to “design”, develop other topics that you are good at and can write about
- Goal: to gain readers outside the design field, to be more precise, “emotional female readers”
After writing the second design quotation article, the author fell into confusion. “The second article was very successful, what should I write next?” Should I continue to write about designs or quotations, or any interesting topics that can attract the attention of designers? This matter has caused the author to struggle for a long time.
However, returning to the original intention of writing a blog, I found that the key point is: self-recording and self-realization.
The author wants to describe what he really wants to say through words, and at the same time record meaningful things. If you can’t write what you really want to write because you only care about the profit management of your blog, then what’s the point of it all?
So the author quickly figured out what I wanted to write about and wanted to record my last relationship. Because for the author, it was an important experience in my life. Many years later, I may completely forget the other person and may not remember the details, but I want to write down how I got to the present and leave it to the future to remember lightly.
From a perceptual perspective, the setting of this article is of great personal significance to the author. But from a rational point of view, is there no strategy in choosing this topic? Not so.
Now that I know that I can write about “design” related topics, what other topics are suitable for me to write about?
This question comes back to me. Who are my potential readers?
Generally speaking, the current native reading traffic on Medium is low, and most of the traffic is still attributed to sharing to Facebook and importing. So the real question should be: “Who are my Facebook readers?”
The author’s Facebook friend group is roughly divided into two major groups: one is friends from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the other is friends from the design circle. Here’s the key point. Most of my friends in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences in college were women, and they also went to an all-girls school in high school. In other words, the author has a large number of female friends. So what topics should I write about that would interest female readers?
Isn’t that “feeling”?
Therefore, on the one hand, this article meets the need for self-recording, and on the other hand, it also achieves the goal test of blog management. Finally, what is the result?
The result was 1,600 claps, and more private messages and comments than before.
In other words, in terms of “interaction”, this article resonated with readers more strongly than before and achieved the expected goal. The disadvantage is that this article made many people cry, and the author also responded to many messages to comfort readers not to be sad.
Another reward for this article was that it was invited to be reprinted by [Womany Women Fans] (https://womany.net/), making the article appear on a well-known media platform for the first time. This article has accumulated more than 8,000 views on the website.
Interesting clapping experiment, secret communication between me and Medium readers
[](https://medium.com/%E8%83 %8C%E5%9C%B0%E8%A3%A1%E7%9A%84%E8%BA%AB%E5%88%86%E5%85%B6%E5%AF%A6 %E6%98%AF%E4%B8%80%E4%BD%8D%E5%B9%B3%E9%9D%A2%E8%A8%AD%E8%A8%88%E5% B8%AB/%E6%97%A5%E8%A8%980317-%E6%84%9B%E7%9A%84%E8%90%AC%E7%89%A9% E8%AB%96-%E7%95%B6%E5%A5%B9%E8%AA%AA-i-have-loved-you-7768ec5cf3fc)
- Test: What will be the result if you write a diary as you like?
- Goal: There is no exact goal. If I really want to say it, it is “I hope that the diary I write casually can also be liked by readers.”
“I hope readers will like it even if it is just casual writing rather than a serious article.” Is this kind of thinking too greedy?
I must admit that after writing the previous articles, the author began to feel a burden. Because every article is a hit article that has exceeded 1,000 hits, I started to be afraid to write casually. So how should you place a casual diary?
The day of writing is the day when Hawking died. In the evening, I watched the movie “The Theory of Everything” (https://zh.wikipedia.org/zh-tw/%E6%84%9B%E7%9A%84%E8%90%AC%E7%89%A9%E8%AB%96). I felt deeply touched, so I suddenly wanted to do an experiment: put down the baggage, don’t think about serious things like writing, and just write a diary, right? Just write down whatever is on your mind lately. Interestingly, the author conducted an experiment at the end of the article, the content of which is as follows:

But if readers like it and are willing to see the author continue to write articles like this, please clap your hands and convey your feelings to the author.
Although this “asking for photos” approach seems very clever, in fact the feedback received is very touching.
In order to increase the experimental nature, the author did not share this article to platforms other than Medium at all. In other words, the traffic and clap count of this article come entirely from the readers of the platform itself (the traffic figures are as shown below).
In total, these readers have given me more than 800 applause feedbacks - they have provided so much feedback to my private words, just to make me feel supported. Isn’t this very touching?
This was a secret experiment that happened on a whim that night, between me and the readers.

*Test: Want to know the exact response that will come from adding SEO suggestions to your writing plan

I have previously done a keyword search test on Google. It turns out that when searching for keywords such as “acquisition quotation”, “design acceptance”, and “design quotation”, you can find your own articles and works on Medium in the first few search results of Google. The details of the test can be found in the following post link, and netizens who left comments under the post also gave many great professional opinions.

However, the previously accumulated results were unintentional because the author did not understand the relevant practices of SEO. After the author conducted this test, my interest in the experiment was aroused, so in a recent article “[Medium List of design writers recommended and tracked on the website, and what I discovered by sorting out the list](https://medium.com/%E8%83%8C%E5%9C%B0%E8%A3%A1%E7%9A%84%E8%BA%AB%E5%88%86%E5%85%B6%E5%AF%A 6%E6%98%AF%E4%B8%80%E4%BD%8D%E5%B9%B3%E9%9D%A2%E8%A8%AD%E8%A8%88%E5%B8%AB/medium-%E4%B8%8A%E6%8E%A8%E8%96%A6%E8%BF%BD%E 8%B9%A4%E7%9A%84%E8%A8%AD%E8%A8%88%E5%AF%AB%E4%BD%9C%E8%80%85%E5%90%8D%E5%96%AE-%E4%BB%A5%E5%8F%8A%E9%80%8F%E9%81%8E%E6 %95%B4%E7%90%86%E5%90%8D%E5%96%AE%E6%88%91%E7%99%BC%E7%8F%BE%E7%9A%84%E4%BA%8B-a4a23c4a17e9)”, decided to put the exact layout of SEO-related suggestions in the writing process. I want to try to see if I can get specific feedback if I do it “deliberately”.
As for how to perform SEO search engine optimization, there are too many introductory tutorials on other optical networks. For reference, it is recommended to read this article written by Wei Youzhu Jude “[Zero advertising budget! So let’s look back at the author’s experimental results. This time, the focus of the test is to focus on the two groups of [long-tail keywords] “design writing” or “design writer” (https://www.contenthacker.today/2018/03/lecturer-content-marketing-generate-profit.html). After all, the competition for short keywords such as “design” or “writing” is fierce, so such a test may not show clear results.
The scenario I imagine is this: If any designer wants to get involved in writing one day, they will find this article just by searching for the keyword linking “design” and “writing”. In other words, the author is trying to pursue becoming “the number one in the design writing world” (an inexplicable title). At the same time, it also guides designers how to get started with writing.
The author published this article on April 30. After two weeks, here are the results of an attempted search on May 13th:

Search results for “design writer” in an incognito window
The results show that in just two weeks, the author’s article ranked third in Google’s search results. At the same time, although the search results for the keyword “design writing” do not appear on the first page, it may be related to the length of the test and the keyword settings. There is still a lot of room for improvement.
All in all, the results of this first experiment were still successful and clear.
This also means that if you carefully plan your articles on Medium, anyone has the opportunity to get good SEO feedback. Provide reference for writers!
Take a nap before changing the venue
I calculated it and found that it has accumulated 7,000 words. Everyone must be tired of reading it. The report is here first, and we will continue to talk later. Let’s continue with the next article!
