Frequently Asked Questions about Description
In recent years, I have often taught copywriting courses in companies or universities. Starting this year, I launched the “Vista Writing Companion Program”. Because of this, I have the opportunity to read many articles written by business people or college students.
Putting aside the quality of writing, I find that many people spend a lot of effort and space describing people, things, places and objects when writing articles, but it seems a pity that people cannot quickly grasp the key points.
Descriptive writing has a unique power and appeal, as it evokes sights, smells, sounds, textures, and tastes. Using description in your writing brings the world within your text to your reader.
Some people describe the details in great detail, but ignore the real focus and interest, as well as the benefits that can be brought to readers; others describe the events in a straightforward manner, as if they were writing down a running account, but without a trace of emotion… The more common situation is that they spend a lot of effort on remembering people, narration, scenes or objects, but they are unable to write a moving chapter, and naturally it is difficult to attract the readers’ attention.
Description Technique: Description is description, writing is imitation. Description is to use vivid and vivid language to describe the state of characters or scenery in detail.
Banana Yoshimoto’s spatial writing
This afternoon while reading the book “Novel Classroom”, I happened to see the author Masao Nemoto mentioning the key to improving description techniques. He pointed out that if you want to improve your description skills, you should read more good works. As long as you read more good articles, your performance ability will also improve.
He also took the famous Japanese writer Yoshimoto Banana as an example. For his works, Yoshimoto Banana hopes that readers can create a space in their minds - neither paintings nor words.
If the description is too detailed, it will be limited to the literal meaning, but if the description is too realistic, it will become just a painting. Only by accurately describing the subtle boundaries is like preparing a special space, and the reader can be invited to enter this mysterious space.
In order to write an article that makes readers feel the sense of space, not just words or paintings, it is not difficult to imagine that Yoshimoto Banana spent a lot of effort in description. And this is worthy of our study and imitation.
