Yesterday I saw a news article mentioning the famous bird-and-worm calligrapher Zhao Muhe, who passed away at the age of 107 in November last year. His epilogue to the Romance of the Three Kingdoms was collected by the British Library (https://www.roc-taiwan.org/uk/post/910.html), becoming the first Taiwanese calligrapher’s work to be collected by the British Library. Although he was not proficient in English, Teacher Zhao traveled alone in Europe when he was 74 years old, and was still working as a volunteer in the hospital at the age of 93. He was even admitted to the University of Nanhua at the age of 96, and received a Master of Philosophy degree at the age of 98 (http://philos2.nhu.edu.tw/app/news.php?Sn=22). It can be said that he is a model of “live until you are old, learn as you grow old”.

Due to the fierce competition in the workplace and the diversified development of careers, many people have begun to feel the importance of further education, so they choose to study in physical courses offered by private courses, or simply return to school to study for a second degree. With the advancement of the Internet environment and information technology, various online education and course platforms have sprung up in recent years, giving aspiring learners more choices.

Thanks to the rise of the concept of “Flipped Classroom”, traditional school education has changed. Online learning has become a convenient and effective way of learning. Students are no longer limited to the classroom environment and can learn independently. Teachers must also abandon the traditional teaching model and design teaching materials and interactive methods that are more suitable for online learning.

Flipped Classroom The current common core concepts include: reversing the past Instead of the purely one-way cramming of “teachers talk and students listen” in the classroom, we instead focus on “student learning-centered” teaching, returning the power of learning to children; we also focus more on inspiring students’ learning motivation, helping students build independent learning abilities, and recognizing multiple evaluations and multiple values.

In the past few years, I have spent money to take various online courses (from academic courses to life cultivation courses to skills courses). I also produced my first set of online courses last year, “[Content Power: The Super Power of Building Brands] (https://hahow.in/cr/content-power)”. As a student and teacher, I have a deeper understanding of online courses - so, how should we choose online courses? Do you just need to choose a topic you like, or does it depend on whether the teacher is famous? Otherwise, you just have to decide whether you can accept it based on the price of the course?

Today, let me talk about the topic “How to choose online courses”!

1. Choose online course platforms carefully

Online learning has many benefits, which makes many people yearn for it. However, because the quality of online courses in the market varies, and some teachers do not have much experience in online teaching, this will not only affect the quality of teaching, but also the interaction between teachers and students may be greatly compromised.

In this era of “everyone can be a teacher”, we must be more cautious when choosing online courses. This is not only a matter of money, but also involves learning outcomes. Therefore, the first key to choosing online courses is to choose the online course platform carefully.

A serious and responsible online course platform will assign a full-time product team to assist teachers in polishing courses to ensure the quality of online courses. I remember that when I was planning the course “Content Power: The Super Power of Building Brands”, I worked intensively with colleagues from Hahow for several months. From script writing and revision to presentation production, and even the shooting of the final instructional video, their dedication can be seen.

Taking the “Get App” on the other side as an example, they not only work closely with each teacher to carefully polish each column, but also make the internal “Get Quality Control Manual” (https://mubu.com/doc/1bKsXed0Fo) public to share with everyone their thoughts and methods on knowledge services.

Opening the “Get Quality Control Manual”, it is clearly mentioned at the beginning: Our mission is to use new technologies to re-produce knowledge. Provide users with learning solutions that maximize the value of unit time to respond to the current challenges of highly fragmented time, cross-border learning becoming necessary, and the lack of solutions for lifelong learning.

Obtain the product mentality: everything is closed-loop with delivering value to users, not sales. Aim to gain value for users and oppose ostentatious display of skills.

Seeing such explanations will naturally make people trust the various courses or products launched by the platform. Domestic online course platforms such as Hahow, YOTTA, etc., although their starting speed at the beginning was not as fast as their counterparts on the other side, they have been catching up in recent years, and the development in all aspects can be said to be quite rapid.

Take the time to choose an online course platform that is willing to grow with teachers and students, so that we can study with peace of mind!

2. Pay attention to the course themes and teacher experience

When many people choose online courses, they are easily confused by the colorful advertisements or powerful sales copy on the online course platform, so they buy the course impulsively without thinking, only to regret it later! There are even many people who have become [class hoarders] who are greedy for petty gains (https://www.jianshu.com/p/7089d6ee6b73). Of course, these phenomena also lead to the problem of low completion rate in online courses.

So, if you are asking me how to choose an online course? I would suggest that you first think clearly about the topic direction you need to study. Is it consistent with the course content launched by the online course platform? At the same time, you should also research the academic experience and background of the teacher - is he really good at learning? Or do you just come to the course out of interest or want to follow the trend and make money? Have you ever offered online courses in the past? Are there any other books or works that you can refer to?

In addition, we also need to clarify the content of this online course. Which groups are it suitable for learning? Do you need some prerequisite knowledge (that is, the knowledge you already have before learning a new thing) or additional tools or software? We must know that if we pick an inappropriate course, it often wastes our precious time and effort. No matter how cheap it is, we should not buy it impulsively.

3. Confirm the learning and interaction methods of online courses

Online courses have many advantages, such as high convenience, comfort, time-saving, and relatively low tuition fees; however, they also have some disadvantages, such as the inability to communicate face-to-face with the teacher, and the difficulty in grasping the learning status in real time, etc.

Therefore, when you are purchasing an online course, in addition to understanding the course topic, teaching policy, and the academic experience and background of the instructor, you must also consider whether this course is suitable for online teaching? For example, if you want to learn landscape photography through the Internet, in addition to watching course briefings and videos, it may also be very important for the teacher to be able to provide guidance when practicing framing, composition, and choosing shooting subjects.

Therefore, when I choose an online course, I don’t only care about the teacher’s reputation or CP value; in other words, it is important to have the course material, but I care more about whether the teacher’s overall planning and arrangement for this online course is logical and systematic? For example, if the teacher has specially arranged interactive sessions, set up complete after-class homework, and even opened a discussion community for Q&A, I would feel more at ease.

For another example, a while ago I helped Mr. Zhang Yongxi (https://www.facebook.com/yunghsi) plan and market his first online course “Time Management: Upgrading the Life Operating System” (https://hahow.in/cr/time-management). Teacher Zhang is a well-known time management lecturer on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, and his professionalism is of course no problem. When we planned this online course, our first consideration was how to meet students’ needs and learning motivations, not price or course content.

In the online course “[Time Management Tips: Upgrading Life Work System] (https://hahow.in/cr/time-management)”, Teacher Zhang not only guides students in the most life-friendly way to sort out an annual plan that suits their own personality and growth rhythm, he also thoughtfully helps everyone set up a check-in community, and arranges Facebook groups and after-school homework exercises to help everyone deconstruct the current chaotic state and move towards a directional life.

Such course design and arrangement can fully demonstrate the effectiveness and advantages of online learning.

If you can master the above three keys, I believe you will be able to choose an online course that suits you! If you have any questions related to online courses, please feel free to leave a message directly or contact me!
