I have participated in reading club activities promoted by the “HPX Website Planning Reading Club” club for about seven or eight years. During this time, I not only read a lot of good books, but also made many good friends who love reading. It is really full of fun and rewards.
If Phoebe Lu is the queen of book clubs, then I should be considered the old prince in the field of book clubs! Although it was a lot of fun to participate in the book club, I was not happy to participate at the beginning. Although I love reading, my reading speed is quite fast (I can read the entire Romance of the Three Kingdoms or Dream of Red Mansions in one hour), so I don’t think there is any specific benefit from spending a lot of time reading with a group of friends.
But when I started reading “The Golden Rules of Designing Good Websites” with a group of friends (Ferrari Dow, Denise Wu, Alex Chou, Dennis Tsai, Yui Chiang, Phoebe Lu, Hsien Chun Lin and Marc Chen, etc.) a few years ago, I fell in love with the book club activity. Starting from G5, it later evolved into G5A, G7, G13, G19 and most recently G5+. I felt like I was addicted to the “book club” and enjoyed it all.
Well, you may be asking, why attend a book club? In addition to having a dedicated person to guide each gathering (everyone will also produce exciting presentations and share practical cases), what’s even better is that everyone has different academic backgrounds and can receive a variety of diverse perspectives through the reading club. Of course, besides the reading club, there are also eating, drinking, and relaxed social activities.
In addition, for example, my birthday in 2012 was spent with me by classmates from the reading club (thank you Frank Yu). This unexpected surprise really moved me, the old prince!
In fact, there is so much fun and gain from participating in a book club! Because I participated in the book club, I also encouraged myself not to be lazy. What’s even better is that in the process of everyone’s communication and interaction, some friends found jobs through the reading club, while others found mentors and even direction in life through the reading club.
And I got to know a group of close friends because of the reading club, and I also experienced the fun of “reading old books new” and “reading good books slowly”; in summary, although I have spent a lot of time on reading in the past few years, the harvest has been really huge, and every bit of it is in my heart.
