As a practitioner of technology media, being bombarded and baptized by a bunch of information and new civilization every day has become an unavoidable ritual and even a natural fate. 2012 is undoubtedly the year when mobile devices and social media shine; but if you want to ask me what is the most popular keyword in 2012, or the most forward-looking career? I think the answer should be “Curation” and “Curator”!
Meet the author Toshisaki Sasaki
KnowToshinao Sasaki(Toshinao Sasaki, the author, goes back to 2007, when his work “Google: Destroyer of Existing Business Models” was introduced to Taiwan, which also brought a wave of reflection. Is Google, which does no evil, a destroyer, or an almighty god? From destruction, subversion to domination, Toshiro Sasaki vividly depicts the development blueprint of Google’s leaders, and also allows us to see another side of the search engine giant.
At that time, this author left a deep impression on me. This time, the new work “The Age of Curation” by Toshisaki Sasaki is even more refreshing, and it takes more time to understand and understand it. The information revolution of “connection” has begun, but this book breaks out of the stereotype of business information books and even takes a new approach. I think this has a lot to do with the fact that the author has studied political science at Waseda University and has experience in media work. When the author was a reporter, he mainly worked in the Metropolitan Police Department. These special work experiences also added interesting chapters to his writing (isn’t this a kind of curation?).
In the book “The Age of Curating”, there are too many fascinating little stories (such as Yokom’s unexpected life is amazing). What’s interesting is that these stories are independent of each other, but at the end of the book, you find that they are vaguely connected. Toshisaki Sasaki incorporates a large number of Western and Japanese historical and humanistic elements, trying to combine the collage techniques of the great era, turning the originally independent and even cold allusions of technology, art, and design into talking legends one after another. The author is not only good at quoting classics, but also skillfully connects the relationships between people. Readers must be patient and read slowly, so that they can finally get the “reward” - enjoy the pleasure of completing the work in one go, and understand the true meaning of “curating”.
The contemporary significance of curating
Facing the explosion of information, we must know how to filter. The author believes that just collecting information is not enough. (Curators) must also be able to distinguish authenticity from falsehood, sort out the context, and connect the relationships between people in order to create real resonance. When likes and check-ins can be curated, we have entered another new era of information value transmission.
Everyone can have different opinions, and you can “check in” on these opinions. Just like when enjoying delicious food or watching interesting TV programs, we can leave comments or systematically collect and organize these messages, and then pass them on to relatives and friends around us. “Curating” sounds very professional, but it is something that everyone can experience and try firsthand.
I am very happy to have this opportunity to read the book “The Age of Curation”. For me who is trying to curate different themes, I have gained a lot of insights after reading this book, and I seem to have found some new directions. I must say, this is not an easy read, and the author does not teach you step-by-step instructions for becoming a curator. But if you are interested in the topic of curation, please don’t miss this good book!
Do you like to see exhibitions with different themes? Must you go to social networking site every day to like, leave comments or absorb new knowledge? Or do you also want to try to be a curator in the physical and online worlds? If your answer is yes, we sincerely invite you to enter “The Era of Curating” together!
