This article is written by Thelma, DimpleJ’s mom. I have more than ten years of working experience in Internet Industry. I currently serve as the Vice President of Internet Celebrity and Live Event Promotion for an advertising company, the regional manager of the Thailand branch, and a consultant for an e-sports company. Thank you for the permission to reprint, hereby thank you.
Last night I was thinking about the process of making a video with my son [DimpleJ] (https://www.facebook.com/ChinDimpleJ). It is actually a new type of dialogue between me and him.
Usually there are two types of conversations between me and him: one is a discussion about some novel things and events, and the other is when I order him to do something! Usually, the latter is what happens most often in ordinary households: Have you showered? It’s late, go brush your teeth!
During the holidays I had more time to have general discussions with him, but that was more like values shaping. During this period of elementary school, he was more able to “accept” my views.
Filmmaking is another form of dialogue. I first think of a topic with him, and then he discusses the script with me. I tell him what jokes can be used, and he will approve or reject it. He will also mention some popular methods: such as homophones, exaggerated expressions, etc. often used by some YouTubers. In comparison, as a mother, I know less about these expressions than he does.
Then, simply write down the scene and content on a piece of paper (don’t expect there to be a slate, this is a family exercise), and he will have opinions on the performance method. To introduce a product, he hopes that the product will fall from the sky and then he will catch it. But I, the photographer, couldn’t help him do this, so he asked his sister to help him throw it. When it was thrown in Dimple J’s face, he got angry and wanted to beat his sister. In the end, he had no choice but to throw it up himself!
However, with the free video software I used, it was actually a bit difficult to cut to the 1/4 second when he picked up the dropped product; let alone the second after he wanted to pick up the product, a little slow motion was beyond my ability as an amateur to edit.
I asked him why he had to behave like this, and he said, “This is fun!”
For the tasting part, you really eat it on the spot, so you can’t know the taste in advance. Because children can’t lie. If something tastes bad, you can’t say it tastes good. If you spit it out on the spot, it will be in the camera.
By the time he made his second film, he was starting to get a little more professional. His expression was dull before the shooting started, but when I put down the piece of paper, he immediately switched to cheerful mode. As a result, after eating NG twice, he got angry and asked if he wanted to finish filming? He said yes because he understood that if the shot was not shot to the end, the hairstyle and clothing would be in different conditions, and the entire scene would have to be re-shot, so he would cooperate until the shot was completed.
Well, in this process, I probably learned a little bit about what “dedication” means.
