Once upon a time, our lives were filled with all kinds of information technology products, and there is no going back. Whether it’s the MacBook Air used to type this recommendation, the iPhone lying quietly in a corner of the table, or the Google Chrome browser that I have opened more than a dozen windows, and the Google search engine that I can’t live without for a day.
I don’t want to discuss serious topics such as “the Internet has made us stupid” here. What is intriguing is that Apple and Google, two top technology companies, continue to appear in our lives and even affect people’s daily routines and future development.
Although the two companies have different businesses, one started out by selling computers, while the other started out by searching for the best player in the world. However, they unexpectedly clashed in the field of mobile devices, which also kicked off the fight of the century.
On June 29, 2007, Apple launched the first generation [iPhone] (https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPhone). To this day, every time I see the scene in the film where Jobs took out his iPhone from his pocket, I feel a sense of shock and emotion from the bottom of my heart, which has never faded for a long time.
It is worth noting that on November 5 of the same year, Google, under the leadership of Andy Rubin, released the mobile phone [Android] (https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android) operating system that symbolizes the spirit of openness, and has since then competed with Apple’s iOS platform.
With the joining of Apple and Google, the mobile network industry has welcomed two shining new stars. On July 10, 2008, Apple launched the App Store service based on the iTunes Store, providing a marketplace for iPhone and iPod Touch users to browse and download applications. On October 22 of the same year, Google immediately followed the App Store’s example and opened the Android Market (the predecessor of Google Play) for Android mobile phone users to download software.
Later, Apple launched iPad, which changed the ecology of the personal computer market in one fell swoop. Google also continues to cooperate with HTC, Samsung, LG and other manufacturers to promote Android devices and vigorously develop mobile advertising business. These histories must be familiar to everyone.
I still remember that in October 2010, I wrote an article in “Digital Times” magazine with the title “Apple vs. Google Innovation Strategy”. It not only introduced the new products and services they launched, but also hoped to talk about each other’s corporate culture and belief in business philosophy from the perspective of the future layout of both parties, and then help everyone (especially Taiwanese manufacturers) find tickets to move forward in the future.
A series of reports at that time not only discussed the duel between the two technology companies in detail, but also aroused many responses. Many friends began to think about what can be learned from the duel of the century between the two heroes?
Time flies, and three years have passed. Although Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs has passed away, and Google’s Eric Schmidt has also withdrawn from the front line and handed over the baton to Larry Page, the competition between Apple and Google has become increasingly fierce.
Both parties continue to launch new products and services, and accelerate the pace of acquiring companies and recruiting talents. You may have just noticed the Nexus 5 smartphone released by Google in early November, but you must also remember Apple’s newly launched iPad Air and iPhone 5s, as well as the epoch-making OS X Mavericks.
As an observer, I am willing to try and embrace all kinds of new information and new civilizations, and I am also keen to feel and experience the convenience brought by technology. For me, Apple and Google are not just two stock-listed companies located in Silicon Valley, nor are they just companies that I have long recorded or paid attention to.
These two companies that emerged from the garage seem to be as friendly as the neighbors next door, and their entrepreneurial stories are more catchy to many people. Reading “Apple vs. Google Battle of the Century” seems to be reviewing the development history of modern Internet technology.
——Never feel strange, because they have changed the world, including you and me.
Postscript:
Just finished writing [this book](https://www.books.com.tw/exep/assp.php/vista/products/0010616640?utm_source=vista&utm_medium=ap-books&utm_content=recommend&utm_campai gn=ap-201503), this morning (editor’s note: November 5, 2013) I read another [news] (http://edn.udn.com/article/view.jsp?aid=677267&cid=47%27#) about these two technology companies. Stephen Gary Wozniak, another founder of Apple, recently took the initiative in an interview with the British BBC and called for Apple to cooperate with Google to jointly improve artificial intelligence technology so that it can be applied to wearable devices.
Is it possible for Apple and Google to both compete and collaborate? For these two companies, which have innovative DNA at their core, perhaps doing “cool things” is far more important than other business considerations. Will Apple and Google continue to work together regardless of their past grievances? Well, although I don’t have the answer, I am optimistic that it is naturally full of possibilities.
