The late former Japanese Senate member and well-known writer Yukio Fujimaki once wrote in “[The Street Thinking Techniques of Top Talents]” (https://www.books.com.tw/exep/assp.php/vista/pr oducts/0010656965?utm_source=vista&utm_medium=ap-books&utm_content=recommend&utm_campaign=ap-202005)”, summarized a set of “street thinking techniques”, claiming that through the “five-meter distance observation method”, you can immediately grasp the sales secrets of popular stores.

This is similar to the “On-the-road Observation” which has become popular in recent years. Well, I also like to walk and think on the streets, and to hone my business intuition through observation. On my way home this afternoon, I noticed that a certain sushi restaurant on the side of the road seemed a little different? After taking a closer look, I realized that the store owner had quietly changed the originally closed wall into a glass window that allowed one to see the goings-on inside the sushi restaurant.

The change brought about by a glass window

Although I was just passing by, this change in decoration immediately attracted my attention. Even though I just glanced at it with the corner of my eye, I made some discoveries. Even though it was long past lunch time, there were still two or three groups of customers happily enjoying sushi in the restaurant.

You may ask, how do I know they are enjoying their meal? Well, the answer is simple. Just seeing the plates stacked half-high on their table is enough to explain it all.

To be honest, I don’t know what reasons and motivations made this sushi restaurant willing to take the initiative to dismantle the airtight wall and replace it with two large glass windows. From the perspective of a passerby, it is difficult to tell whether the merchant has figured something out? However, when this store first opened a few years ago, I thought it should be done!

The contradiction between people-friendly approach and mystery

This sushi restaurant left a deep impression on me. Looking back when it was still being renovated, I realized that the approach of this restaurant was a little different from other restaurants: shouldn’t chain sushi restaurants with office workers and family members as their main customers focus on people-friendly style or affordable food? Is it really necessary to make the store airtight?

A sushi restaurant is a gathering place suitable for all ages, not a high-end club with a membership system. I don’t understand whether it is really necessary to protect the privacy of guests. Of course, because I can’t see the business status of sushi restaurants from the outside, I have never been able to know whether their business is good or bad in the past few years, and I seem to lack the courage or motivation to go in and make purchases.

Now I am very happy to see the industry changing its ways. Because this not only allows passers-by to see the joyful scenery in the sushi restaurant, it also seems to announce that the restaurant is opening its heart to welcome guests. I think this will not only help improve performance, but also make more people willing to come in and taste the delicious food!
