When you mention E-Commerce (E-Commerce), you may think of a convenient shopping experience (such as Amazon’s 1-Click), or you may think of the huge commercial benefits worth hundreds of millions behind it. From Amazon in the United States, Alibaba in China to PChome in Taiwan, global e-commerce has developed for more than ten years and is now an important industry with annual revenue of hundreds of billions of dollars.

Everyone is already accustomed to shopping online, but do you know where the next battlefield for e-commerce will be? That’s right, on the mobile device that nearly every one of us has. In the future, the decisive stage for e-commerce players will be on smartphones and tablets.

Just imagine, if you can easily complete shopping with just a few “swipes”, will it increase customers’ desire to buy? And how much performance can a good shopping experience bring to the industry?

According to a recent survey released by BI Intelligence, as of the end of the third quarter of 2013, 63% of people in the United States owned smartphones and 35% owned tablets. What is particularly noteworthy is that this group of tablet users, especially those with higher incomes, have shown a strong preference to shop on mobile devices.

The proportion of Americans who own smartphones and use mobile coupons is also increasing, from 7.4 million in 2010 to 29.5 million in 2012. By 2013, the number of consumers using discount coupons will reach 47.1 million, which is quite impressive.

Gartner, a well-known market research and research organization, pointed out that 2017 will be a critical year for the evolution of e-commerce. Mobile commerce will surpass traditional e-commerce and lead sales through digital channels.

Not only are Americans accustomed to making purchases through smartphones or tablets, Chinese netizens also rely heavily on mobile phones for shopping. Just look at the “Online Shopping Carnival” led by Alibaba Group to get the clues:

According to Alibaba Group, as of 23:59:59 on November 11, 2013, the total transaction volume of this Taobao “Double Eleven” shopping carnival reached 35.019 billion yuan, of which 5.35 billion yuan came from mobile Taobao.

If we look at the official data released by Taobao, the overall Alipay transaction volume of mobile Taobao on November 11, 2013 was 5.35 billion yuan, 5.6 times that of last year (960 million yuan); single-day active users reached 127 million; the number of single-day transactions on mobile Taobao reached 35.9 million, accounting for 21% of the total.

In other words, more than one-seventh of the total transaction value of “Double Eleven” last year (2013) came from mobile phones. It is obvious that “mobile shopping” in China is not just a trend and future in the words of experts and scholars, but a real and ongoing event.

Looking back at Taiwan, both B2C and C2C e-commerce have been developing vigorously in recent years. Since last year, in addition to many online, bank and cash flow operators busy fighting for the relaxation of “third-party payment” regulations, some operators have also begun to target the mobile shopping market. Among them, He Yingqi, the former general manager of Yahoo! Qimo e-commerce, was the most active. He not only established Jiuyi Shopping Company, but also launched a mobile shopping app called “[91mai will buy] (https://www.bnext.com.tw/article/view/id/35746)”.

According to survey data from FIND and Mobile First, the number of people in Taiwan who own smartphones or tablets has reached 10.53 million, accounting for 49.5% of the population over the age of 12. This also means that on average, one in two people owns a mobile device. Moreover, this number is still growing.

However, although Taiwan’s online shopping market is still booming, its growth has gradually slowed down, from 30.3% in 2010 to 15.7% in 2013. This also means that the traditional online shopping market is gradually maturing and even starting to experience bottlenecks. It is time for manufacturers to prepare for the mobile commerce market.

“Taiwan’s mobile commerce market size in 2015 was at least 60 billion, accounting for more than 6% of the overall online shopping market.” [Lee Chaoji] (Lee Chaoji), the marketing chief of Jiuyi Shopping Company (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000336954188), is very optimistic about the future development of mobile commerce.

There is no doubt that in the future, more and more people in China will access the Internet through smartphones and tablets. Once these consumer groups who are “glued” to their mobile devices to play games and surf the Internet develop the habit of shopping through mobile devices, and the cash flow problem can be solved smoothly, future market opportunities will not be underestimated.

For those who are currently involved in the e-commerce market, in addition to paying attention to customer preferences and consumption behaviors, they should also pay attention to the development trends of the global mobile era and construct a set of mobile policies. It may not be necessary to follow the trend and build your own App, but it is necessary for the original official website or shopping website to develop in the direction of Responsive Web Design (Responsive Web Design).

It is true that if you want to successfully occupy a place in the new era of e-commerce, you must start preparing for Mization now. Only in this way can we get the first clue and get tickets to the mobile commerce market.
