I often recommend that beginners start with “Freewriting”. This is a simple but extremely effective method: just write, regardless of whether the grammar is correct or whether it is organized. For example, I was once in a coffee shop and saw a young couple chatting and checking their phones. This scene aroused my curiosity, and after I returned home, I recorded the scene in a free-writing style. Later, this description became the beginning of a short story about modern relationships.

Know Your Readers: A Compass for Writing

Understanding the needs of your target readers is the key to accurate writing. For example, when I write a business article, I think about what the target readers might care about? What are their backgrounds, expertise and needs? Once I wrote a copy for a product launch event for a technology company. After understanding that the target readers were technology enthusiasts and industry professionals, I chose more professional technology language and in-depth technical details to ensure that the article could arouse their interest and response.
