Recently, in the “Content Touching Marketing” community I run, a friend asked a question: “Where should I publish my articles? Which content platform is more appropriate?” I have been thinking about this topic recently, and today I will share some insights, which may help you find the direction in this field.

Find the right audience

When many people hear that they want to write or operate [self-media] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-4wqA32pdY), the first question that immediately comes to their mind is: Should I consider setting up my own website, or register an account on a content platform? First, let’s get one thing straight: there is no one standard answer that works for everyone. It really depends on what you want and who you’re talking to?

Having said that, where do your readers, the people you wish to communicate with, hang out? What content do they like to watch? This will be more important than you think.

Understand the uniqueness of each platform

Let’s put it this way, every content platform, whether it is a popular local website (such as Pixnet and Fanggezi), or a globally renowned platform (such as Medium), they have their own unique charm and strengths. In other words, each of these content platforms is good at its own niche, and has its own different community atmosphere and specific readership, as well as preferences for different types of content.

Rather than worrying about which content platform is better, I would suggest that creators do some homework first. Get a deeper understanding of the characteristics of each content platform—their features, the types of content they focus on, and their overall vibe. Try to find the intersection between their advantages and your content attributes and needs, and then think about which platform is most suitable for your work to be published?

Build your own website or use a platform?

Next, there’s an important question: Should you open the welcoming door on your own website and create a cozy little nook, or should you venture into the bustling city square and set up your own turf on a platform that others have already established? This requires careful consideration, including what you want to achieve as well as budget constraints.

If you have enough budget or are familiar with the process of setting up a website, then of course you can consider setting up the website yourself. On the contrary, maybe it is also a good way to start running your own small world from popular content platforms!

The importance of continuous creation

But the most important thing is to keep creating. Whether you’re in your own little niche or on a big platform, your voice matters. For a creator, the most important thing is to continue to share your stories, opinions and your truest side.

In summary, I encourage everyone to choose a suitable content platform to publish articles. This is indeed very important. But the key point of consideration is that you can compare and think about it from multiple perspectives, rather than just thinking from the perspective of traffic or popularity.
