Last weekend (May 26), I was very happy to have the opportunity to be invited to National Tainan University to share a few things about career planning with the students of the School of Management.

In a bustling job market, standing out from the crowd of job seekers is no easy task. In order to benefit more young students, I would like to share a personal guide that is like a secret recipe for building a resume that not only attracts attention but also clearly marks you as the best candidate.

Although these methods may seem a bit complicated, it’s all about highlighting your uniqueness and showing why you’re the ideal candidate for the job? Now, let me share with you these five key strategies that are very effective!

The first key strategy is customization. Yes, it’s much easier to create a generic resume, but let’s face it, that doesn’t cut it. Every job and company is unique, and your resume should reflect that. Just like you wouldn’t wear the same outfit to a beach party and a job interview, you shouldn’t use the same resume for every job application. Customize it to the role you’re seeking, highlighting the skills and experience that best match the job description.

Imagine if you were one of hundreds of products on a human shelf, how would you attract customers’ attention? What makes you stand out? What is your unique selling proposition? The second key strategy is to find ways to highlight your strengths and make those points concrete. It’s not just about mentioning what would you do? But why are the things you can do different from others? Can you even do better than others?

When it comes to resume writing, know that a rich resume is enough to help you quickly demonstrate specific achievements. So, it’s one thing to list your responsibilities, but it’s another to be able to show what you’ve accomplished! The third key strategy is to use data whenever possible to quantify your success, because facts speak louder than words. For example, using “sales increased by 20% and operating costs reduced by 30%” are details that can make you noticed by employers.

Of course, the fourth key strategy is to add a portfolio or relevant links to your resume. In today’s digital age, having a distinct online image or personal brand often allows potential employers to see your work results and abilities, which is extremely valuable. Whether it is a personal website, LinkedIn profile or a digital portfolio, you can easily let the other party gain a deeper understanding of your background and personality traits.

Finally, when it’s time to put pen to paper and start writing your resume, make sure your resume is more than just a list of tasks you’ve performed. So the fifth key tactic is to focus on demonstrating your ability to contribute to the company (including all substance and specific skills). Talk more about results, projects you’ve led, and past initiatives that have led to positive results. The purpose of all this is to show the outside world why you are the ideal candidate for this position?
