Speaking of Hashtags, you may immediately think of those on Facebook and Instagram, right? But in fact, topic tags are not exclusive to Facebook. Twitter or blogs also support topic tags. Hashtags can not only be used as keywords, but are also used by many people to flaunt themselves or reflect their inner thoughts.
I believe that hashtags, if used properly, can be an important driver of content marketing and social marketing!
In fact, the popularity of hashtag has a lot to do with Twitter. Hashtags were created in 2007 by developer Chris. Chris Messina’s suggestion was originally not adopted by Twitter officials. But when the San Diego forest fires occurred in October 2007, many citizen journalists began to use the hashtag #SanDiegoFire to update the latest fire information, and Twitter decided to follow suit.
Nowadays, hashtags have almost become a standard feature of social media; Instagram and Facebook, which are loved by young people, have introduced a large number of hashtags. Netizens can not only use hashtags to mark current events or self-proclaim, but they can also use them to find people with similar interests. For example, if someone checks in and takes a photo at a certain restaurant, you can usually see a series of hashtags on her IG such as: #food # delicious #foodie #民生Community #Taipei #Friends Dining #Internet Celebrity Restaurant…etc.
Many users, well-known brands or media like to use hashtags to mark current events or developments, and the coverage is very wide, ranging from serious political events, cool technology trends, all the way to light entertainment topics.
Taking Facebook as an example, the advantage of using hashtags appropriately is that you can turn the topics and words in your personal feed or page posts into clickable links. This helps users find topics they are interested in, but it feels that its use is not popular enough and is not as good as Instagram; in addition, in terms of functionality, it is not as easy to use as Twitter. Twitter’s hashtags have been around for a long time, and many people use them to keep track of trends and updates!
Do you want to put hashtags to work? Below, I have some suggestions to share with you:
First, no matter which social media platform you use, before using hashtags, make sure they are relevant to the content you are writing or filming. If it has nothing to do with the topic, no matter how many tags you add, it will be in vain!
Second, if you are planning an event, come up with a meaningful and unique hashtag that no one has used before. In addition, the design principle of theme tags is that they must be simple and easy to understand and not easily misunderstood.
Next, keep the hashtag as short as possible, don’t be as long and smelly as grandma’s foot wrap! Although a longer hashtag is often more unique and may be able to more fully explain the idea…but a hashtag that is too long cannot be impressive or immediately remembered, and it is not conducive to dissemination. Therefore, it is best to handle it before use.
Regarding how to use hashtags, Facebook also made several suggestions (https://www.facebook.com/facebookmedia/blog/using-hashtags-on-facebook), such as: create your own hashtags, participate in and promote hashtags, use hashtags to extract questions and answers, etc.
By the way, I would like to recommend a useful online service HASHTAGIFY. This tool claims to increase your chances of success through tag marketing! If you want to know whether there are related tags for a specific topic tag, or want to find out the opinion leaders related to this topic tag, you can search it now!
I searched for #contentmarketing, and sure enough, I could get relevant results immediately:

Let’s take a look at what are the tags related to content marketing? Well, it lists tags such as marketing, social media, digital marketing, blogging, etc. The correlation is indeed quite high. In addition, HASHTAGIFY also lists several opinion leaders who often talk about content marketing, such as the number one Jeff Bullas, who is a well-known expert in the field of content marketing and social marketing. His discussion is indeed worthy of reference!
In addition to social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, if you also want to add topic tags to your blog, my suggestion is to use three to five tags for each article, and try to use simple and easy-to-understand keywords. Moreover, it is best not to add new hashtags all the time, but to consider which hashtags this article is suitable to be classified under? After all, the more hashtags the better!
As the saying goes, “Too many words but not enough is not as good as too few.” Hashtags can be said to be a tool to promote the exchange of people’s ideas. If used correctly, they will not only help with publicity and exposure, but also add some fun to social life!
