If you want to become a competent professional lecturer, you need to go through a lot of practice. Not only must you try to improve your own academic skills, but you must also seize the opportunity to further your studies. In addition to absorbing various professional knowledge, you can also take the opportunity to observe the teaching methods and teaching techniques of other teachers.
During the learning process, I will also pay attention to the backgrounds and learning experiences of different teachers, understand their context construction and logical development of various professional knowledge, and also observe the personality background and thinking patterns of each teacher. For example, today I will take teacher Liu Yiyou’s “Systematization of Simplifying Complexity” Thinking: Four manifestations, three major scenes, making the key slide” On the surface, it seems that this is a course about presentation design, but it is not.
System thinking is a thinking method that treats the cognitive object as a system and comprehensively examines the cognitive object from the interconnection and interaction between the system and elements, elements and elements, system and environment. Systems thinking is a thinking form that takes systems theory as the basic mode of thinking. It is different from instinctive thinking forms such as creative thinking or image thinking. Systems thinking can greatly simplify people’s understanding of things and give us a holistic view.
What is systematic thinking?
In my opinion, systematic thinking is a cognitive ability that everyone needs, especially [Liu Yiyou](https://www.contenthacker.today/2018/04/kevin-liu-presentation- skills-courses.html) teacher has a background in statistics and is good at presentation design. Therefore, when dealing with topics such as “systematic thinking”, he can not only jump out of the framework of traditional presentations, but also draw lessons from other sources and cite many practical cases at his fingertips.
At the beginning, Teacher Liu pointed out that this class is not just about teaching presentation design, but also about teaching everyone the skills of how to use data to tell a good story. Later, he advanced to using a slide to highlight key points. As for why we need to simplify the complex, it is mainly because in this age of attention shortage, everyone does not have much patience. If you can say less and influence more, then of course it would be great!
When it comes to lowering the threshold of understanding, Teacher Liu made three suggestions:
-
Primary data: data sorting and structuring.
-
Retrieve aspects: information retrieval and perspective reorganization.
-
Streamline the boundaries: Message refinement has its limits.
He also took climbing a high-rise building as an example to tell us: Even if the same scenery appears in front of us, everyone sees different details and key points, and the method of describing it is naturally different. What’s more noteworthy is that even if the height is the same, the feelings often vary from person to person.
As for the systematic approach to simplifying the complex, Teacher Liu proposed five steps:
-
Understand: the purpose of information, structural breakdown, and key messages.
-
Viewpoint: Re-give relevance and structure to messages.
-
Layout: The layout is configured to guide the sight.
-
Noise reduction: Enhance focus and weaken noise based on the importance of the message.
-
Subscript: An impactful message title to ensure that people can see the essence of the message at a glance.
The teacher used mobile payment as an example to demonstrate how to break down a large amount of complicated text messages into easy-to-read graphic information.

Next, Teacher Liu also asked everyone to practice making a slideshow that simplifies the complex with the topic “Advantages of the Gyudon Chain Store”.

Students can also learn and sell immediately, making eye-catching works immediately (pictured above, left). Of course, if we look at Teacher Liu’s works, there are things we can learn from in terms of layout layout and color use.
Let the data tell a good story
After talking about simplifying a large amount of text, let’s talk about how to let data tell a good story. This section talks about the use of charts, which is also Teacher Liu’s strength.
Talking about the use of charts, after class today I realized that two types of charts, analytical charts and expressive charts, can be used. Regarding the use of charts and data, Teacher Liu also reminded everyone:
-
Communicate the message: Are you showing data? Discover? Or a suggestion?
-
Tell a good story: Is it relevant to the audience? Want to take action?
-
Simplify the image: Simplification, focus and correct communication are much better than the richness of the image.
In addition, he also shared with you the guidelines for selecting chart types:
-
Points: Present correlation (scatter chart, bubble chart).
-
Line: Show changes (line chart).
-
Surface: Make comparisons (bar chart, pie chart, radar chart).
Although I have read many books on presentation design in the past, after today’s practical exercise, I can better understand what kind of charts to use to convey information!
Tips on how to create a one-page presentation
Finally, talking about the one-page presentation, Teacher Liu also taught everyone how to structure the presentation:
-
Creative thinking: divergence and convergence.
-
Systems thinking: start with the end in mind.
-
Situational framework: Conquer complexity with simplicity.
The practice of using situational framing makes my eyes light up. Through the flexible use of time frames, spatial frames, and logical frames, our briefings can be more layered and better present the full picture of the report.
At the end of today’s course, Teacher Liu also shared with everyone his briefing on micro plastic surgery private room techniques. Following the practice of the nine-square grid of the business model, before starting to design the brief, you can first fill in relevant information such as materials, time, venue, content, purpose, type, object, desired actions, and core values into the form. In other words, this method actually invokes the concept of 5W2H, which allows briefing designers to think logically.

Finally, Teacher Liu hopes that everyone can spend twenty minutes summarizing the key points learned today and present them in a one-page slide. Well, it can be regarded as helping the students to accept the results of today’s study that simplifies the complex!

My learning experience and practice
In less than five minutes, I used the slide above to summarize today’s learning results. In my opinion, systematic thinking is mainly based on three levels: perspective focus, story communication and thinking concreteness.
Whether you are writing an article or giving a presentation, everyone knows that you need to convey your opinions. However, if you do not talk about relevant issues, the target audience may not be interested. Furthermore, the communication of issues also needs to be packaged and transformed so that people can feel it and accept it happily. As for story communication, we can make good use of data analysis or situational presentation, and the focus is nothing more than outlining the current situation, highlighting changes, and then amplifying the problem.
The stage of concrete thinking can be compared with the eyes of insects, birds and fish. For professionals, we not only need to pay attention to the development of the company itself, but also understand the relationship between competitors and industries. Finally, we need to peel off the cocoons and make judgments based on the overall economy and overall trends in order to make the most appropriate decisions.

The six-hour “Systematic Thinking to Simplify Complexity: Four Performances, Three Major Scenes, and Create the Key Slide” course ended with the students taking the stage one by one to share their works. Thank you, Teacher Liu, for sharing. I feel that time flies very fast, but I know: this is not a course that can be quickly understood after listening to it. It requires constant chewing and thinking. Of course, you also need to take action and improve your systematic thinking ability through practical exercises.
