Friends who have attended my class may have heard me mention how to build an “inspiration database”. This means that whether you like to record with pen and paper or use digital tools, you can build a database that can be expanded at any time and easily queried based on your industry or things you are interested in.

I accidentally opened my “Inspiration Database” this morning and saw that [Luo Zhenyu] (https://www.vistacheng.com/luoji-taipei-meetup-20160928), who recently worked on “Luo Ji Thinking”, had introduced his content plan for “getting” in 2018. There is a very interesting passage mentioned at the beginning that I would like to share with you:

In fact, it is very difficult to build a great company, but I admire Luo Pang’s ambition and his ability to take action in the past few years - think about his determination to give New Year’s Eve speeches for 20 consecutive years, that is no joke! What the author means is that we don’t need to be bound by traditional ethics, but we should put aside old ideologies and start taking action if we want to do something!

The book mentioned the story of the “Million Grid Website”. I think younger friends may not have heard of this case. I think back then, it was very popular!

The time sequence goes back to 2005, when the 21-year-old Alex. Tiyou（Alex Tew hoped to earn enough to pay for three years of tuition at the Department of Business Administration at the University of Nottingham, so he from Wiltshire, England, created the [Million Dollar Homepage] (http://www.milliondollarhomepage.com/), selling each pixel on the homepage of the website for one dollar, and the size of each advertising space is 10×10 pixels.

As you can imagine, no one paid attention to him at first! But later, with reports from the BBC and other media, in just four months, the Million Grid website became famous and the advertising space was quickly sold out. Of course, along with the smooth sailing of this “lattice business”, some people sneered at this idea and even posted articles criticizing him.

But Alex. Tiyu did not feel dissatisfied, because with this idea, he not only quickly helped himself earn his first one million US dollars (https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E7%99%BE%E8%90%AC%E7%BE%8E%E5%85%83%E9%A6%96%E9%A0%81), but also became a legend in the Internet industry. Also because the nutrients that a formal university education could provide him were too limited, he quickly dropped out of university in December of that year.

Think about it, if it were you and me, would we have the courage to do this? If you analyze it carefully, the technology behind “Millions of Grids” is not difficult, but why is there only Alex? Can Tiyu succeed? What did he do right?
