A few days ago, I hosted a live broadcast for the partners of the [First Graphic and Text Creation Training Camp] (https://creationcamp.vstar.school/). The topic of the talk was “[The establishment of creative mentality and concept] (https://www.vistacheng.com/2021/08/the-concept-of-creativity.html)”.

Later, a student asked me: “How should I position myself? It seems difficult to understand myself. How can I discover my own strengths?”

Well, this is indeed a big question. If positioning was so simple, there wouldn’t be so many books or courses on the market talking about this topic. The so-called self-positioning is actually living how you want to live. Close your eyes and think about it, what do you wish you could accomplish? Or, how would you like to be remembered?

Many people may think that they should first find their passion before setting their own identity. It sounds great if you can change your life by doing something specific, but even if you do find something you love, will you be able to make a living doing it? Or will your life be more exciting because of it?

It is indeed important to find your passion, but it is not as simple as imagined.

Carl. Newport (Cal Newport pointed out in the book “Deep Workplace Power” that instead of trying to find out where your passion lies, it is better to develop your own rare and valuable skills. Find a need in the market and try to fill that need. In other words, as soon as you can develop relevant skills and start to see small opportunities for success, enthusiasm will naturally follow.

Newport writes: “You put in the work first and become great at something worthwhile, and you will get enthusiasm later, rather than having enthusiasm first and then going to work. In other words, the content of your work is far less important than the attitude towards your work.”

Enthusiasm is very important, I quite agree; however, jobs that keep people enthusiastic are often impossible to force. Maybe when the causes and conditions are all right, one day it will suddenly appear before our eyes. This reminds me of the past when I entered the media service. At that time, I just liked writing and interviewing. But if I couldn’t move forward because I was not from a major communication department, how could I squeeze into the narrow door of the media?

Although I worked in different industries such as the Internet circle and the electronics industry before entering media services, I started preparing very early. Whether I’m trying to write a column or conduct interviews, I tell myself that I need to develop skills first before I can seize opportunities.

Instead of blindly pursuing passion, I prefer to take it one step at a time, crossing the river by feeling the stones, and strive for various possibilities based on my strength. Well, maybe I’m an old-school guy? But I am more willing to challenge myself and leave my own footprints in the long river of time.

Having said that, creation itself is a kind of continuous accumulation. Let’s encourage everyone!
