The author of this article まろ is the author of the light novel “Southern Cross”. He hopes to use his own experience to help more friends write good stories. Thank you for authorizing the “Content Hacker” website to reprint it. Thank you hereby.
I am very honored to read in Teacher Vista’s [“Slow Reading and Understanding in Seconds: Vista’s Digital Good Copywriting Analysis Time”](https://www.books.com.tw/products/0010794093?utm_source=vista&utm_medium=ap-books&utm_content=recommend&utm_campaign=ap-20 1808) At the new book launch party, the teacher asked me to share about [[まろ’s writing classroom]](https://www.contenthacker.today/search/label/%E3 %81%BE%E3%82%8D%E7%9A%84%E5%AF%AB%E4%BD%9C%E6%95%99%E5%AE%A4?&max-results=7)This unit. Although my name is in the series title, it is a column that I collaborated with Mr. Vista!

The origins of this serialization unit are interesting. One day I was discussing with Teacher Vista how to organize information. I mentioned that I mainly use To Do List, so the teacher recommended him to use the online service to organize courses. When I saw the information compiled by the teacher, I was very surprised.
So let’s just consider it as practice. I spent a week organizing my experience from writing a novel in 2002 to officially publishing it this year, into 33 projects. After the unit was officially serialized, the advanced unit “Detailed Storyboarding” was added, so there are currently 34 units.
After Teacher Vista saw the list of projects I listed and the key topics of each course, she probably thought that I was a serious student (laughing), so she suggested starting a serialization of this column.
The original goal of this unit is the writing of original novels, biographies and corporate history. In fact, you can also write film, television or game scripts, and other creations that are essentially “story”. It’s just that “script” has a relatively fixed format and is not included in our courses, but this course will definitely allow you to write the soul of a good script.

When I listed the original 33 courses, I felt like “Wow, I didn’t expect there to be so many. If I told others that I need to learn so many things to write a novel, I would be surprised if they didn’t be scared to death.” Seriously, there is no other playbook on the market that spans so many projects. There are even some projects that may not traditionally be included in the scope of drama, but are very important.
So I divide all projects into three major stages. Generally speaking, the goal of the [Preparation Assignment] stage is to allow you to complete the story outline; the goal of the [Plot Process] stage is to allow you to complete a quasi-commercial-level short story; and [Writing and Management] is designed for friends who want to move towards commercial distribution.

The content of the first lesson comes from questions I was asked at a previous play sharing session. Most people who want to write stories will encounter many practical problems before they encounter the technical problem of “how to write”. For example, the opposition of friends and family, and the loss of time and energy.
Regarding these practical problems on the road of creation, they are all organized in [“Lesson 1 [Preparation of Homework] Adjustment of Mood”] (https://www.contenthacker.today/2018/07/maro-writing-class-1.html).

The origin of the second lesson is that friends who are interested in drama but are hesitant often ask me: “Should I start with the characters or the worldview?”
My answer is: “No, we have to start from the premise.” There is a saying that says, “The so-called drama is when the writer wants to prove an idea, so he sets up a twisted world to reasonably prove this proposition.” (It should be included in “Awesome Novels Are Written Like This”, the meaning of the text is roughly the same, and it is not the content of the original book)
Therefore, the starting point for your creation should be to think about what you want to prove or illustrate. And “Lesson 2 [Preparing Homework] Establishing Premise” is written for you.

The origin of the third lesson, or why I emphasize these contents so much, is probably because my friends have many anime fans. For them, character setting is equivalent to drawing a beautiful girl or beautiful boy.
But I have to say, that’s not the case. If you start with this idea, the story will quickly tire. (I’ve really seen a lot, so much that I’m tired)

The picture above is the most important key to character setting. Charm points, interaction methods, and in order to make this character more reasonable and realistic, you need to design his past experience. “Lesson 3 [Preparation Homework] Character Setting (Part 1 and 2)” is the answer you want.

The fourth lesson is when your character conflicts with others or the world in the process of verifying the premise. Just like what you can see in many movies, the protagonist fights against terrible criminals/organizations/aliens in order to protect his wife, children or friends. But if you think about it, animals basically seek to protect themselves first, and humans are no exception. Your character must step out of his comfort zone to fight because of an unbreakable bond, and you have to create that bond.
Also, if you make creation your career, you can’t just create characters with similar personalities and ages. You need to learn the various personalities and emotions of “human beings” from culture and psychology. And I focused all on “Lesson 4 [Preparation Assignment] Creating Conflict (Part 1, 2, Supplement)”.

Lesson 5 is based on another common misunderstanding: “Fantasy stories are better.” I think this phenomenon may be caused by “Harry Potter”, “A Song of Ice and Fire” and a large number of palace battle dramas. Fantasy stories certainly have their charms, but you must first understand that these charms also require a lot of knowledge and labor to convert. In this way, errors in story details can be minimized, such as whether mandala can cure certain diseases and what color pearls are.
I do not encourage creating “fantasy works” as an ambition. I think the focus should be on universal elements and context. If a story in your mind insists on using a fantasy worldview, then use it. Therefore, I have prepared “Lesson 5 [Preparation Assignment] Elements and World View (Top, Middle, Bottom)” for you.

Lesson 6 is the unit that starts with the [Assignment Preparation] stage and asks you to practice the genre of “novel”. Novels are very different from narrative genres such as travel notes and biographies because of the change in “narrative point of view.” Any novice who writes novels must master the important skill of “narrative point of view” in order to smoothly develop the story. It can also avoid the sluggish feeling of repeatedly saying “A said” and “B said” over and over again.
In addition, in order to prevent your story from becoming a chronicle, the important item “narrative” is also included. When you finish studying “Lesson 6 [Preparation Assignment] Narrative Methods and Storyboards (Part 1 and 2)”, you will be able to complete a simple story or summary!

Next is [Plot Process], in Lessons 7 to 21. At this stage, we are going to learn about the transformed three-act play: the five-act play. It is roughly similar to the theory of “Let the hero save the cat first” or “The Hero’s Road”, but I emphasize five stages: prologue (initial foreshadowing), shaking of belief (a relatively superficial problem, such as the protagonist being forced to defeat the bad guy), resolution of the apparent problem (the protagonist successfully defeats the bad guy), complete destruction of belief (the bad guy is actually the protagonist’s father, and he was slandered! Oh my God! A big reversal!?), and the resolution of the final problem (the protagonist successfully eliminates the real bad guy).
Therefore, in the early part of the story, the protagonist usually faces superficial problems, such as lack of ability, lack of partners, etc.; while in the later part, his problems will be more psychological, such as his own origin, betrayal by his partners, being exploited, etc. And a sentence that sparked discussion when shared: “I think suspense is standard equipment.”
If you want your story to linger in readers’ minds for a long time, you need the holy grail of suspense.

I think that after all the characters are introduced, they don’t know what to write. This should be the pain in the hearts of 99.99% of novices. I also met many friends who were like this, so some people kept adding new characters, and then the population exploded.
Well, writing is better than not writing, right? …Is this really the case?
If you really want to write a story in your heart, you won’t excuse it by saying, “I’m just writing for fun anyway.” No matter what problem you have, this serial unit, and I, are happy to assist you.
When you put in the effort and complete the study of [plot flow], I believe you have captured the essence of the play.

The [Writing and Business] stage is specially written for friends who have business writing ambitions. Honestly, I can’t guarantee you’ll be able to become a full-time writer. After all, the publishing industry is in recession, and negotiating royalties with publishers is also a skill.
However, you can definitely become an amateur writer, and if you are willing to accept more realistic conditions, the possibility of publishing a book is also very high. At this stage, I will explain in detail the application skills of psychology and words, including “phonology” that not many people care about. If I told you that the reason why ordinary people have so little oral rhetoric/grammar is actually because of phonology, would you believe it?
Phonology is the closest thing to hypnosis in philology, isn’t it interesting?
It also includes community building and promotion (currently mainly FB and Google Ads, maybe the experience of running Instagram will be included in the future), the key points of copyright, the key points of cooperation with publishers (from the real complaints of editors to contributors), collecting materials and brewing inspiration.

Finally, I would like to express my special thanks to Teacher Vista. Without him, this column would not exist.
If you agree with my views on the elements of drama, you can verify it from my novel book “Southern Cross” (link to blog). If you really agree, please put aside any doubts about your talents, abilities, etc., and learn with me! Thanks to Teacher Vista for writing the recommendation for “Southern Cross”, and I look forward to your thoughts on this book!
What I’m even more looking forward to is that one day I can write a recommendation for your novel!
See you next time at [Lesson 7: Prologue (Part 1) Initial Impressions of the Protagonist and World View] (Click to read)!
