Probably few people know that I was engaged in E-Learning in teaching-related fields for a while. Therefore, I have known Mr. Wally for a long time, and I admire his many years of investment and dedication in the field of training and teaching.

Today I am very happy to participate in this “2019 ATD and AL Sharing Session” and be able to [learn together] up close with Mr. Wally and many advanced leaders in the training industry (https://www.facebook.com/markgrass/posts/10220377157644542).

This “2019 ATD and AL Sharing Session” has too much content worthy of savoring and chewing. Here I will only list a few of the content that I am most impressed by. For other parts, it is recommended to sign up for Teacher Wally’s subsequent AL courses. Of course, you are also welcome to communicate with me!

Walmart’s VR Training Revolution

Teacher Wally talked about Walmart using VR technology and developing mobile apps for mobile phones to train employees, which made me see that the rise of educational technology (EdTech) has brought many new business opportunities and possibilities. Think about it, Walmart actually promoted VR training in its 200 training centers and bought [17,000 Oculus Go VR headset devices] (https://www.theverge.com/2018/9/20/17882504/walmart-strivr-vr-oculus-go-headset-training-shipments). This is not just a big deal, but also shows the ambition of their layout.

VR training is becoming more common in a variety of industries to educate a large number of workers quickly or assess the technical ability of high-skilled workers like electricians or pilots. But Walmart’s use of the technology to gauge a worker’s strengths, weaknesses and potential is significant because it pushes VR evaluation out to a massive hourly workforce and in some cases helps determine who gets raises and who gets demoted.

Using VR to invest in training is jaw-dropping enough! Walmart actually developed a mobile game to train a new generation of managers. Doesn’t it sound crazy? They launched a mobile version of the game called Spark City, based on popular games such as SimCity and Clash of Clans, to challenge employees to manage their departments like a small business.

Players can customize inventory, staffing, and customer service decisions, packaging months of business processes into hours of gameplay. By unlocking new levels, tools, and useful information, these store managers learned to consistently implement Walmart’s “One Best Way” department management process.

Have you mastered the basics of Dry Grocery and have 3 star workers in Lawn and Garden? It’s time to take on Entertainment! You and your team will learn how to manage physical security on merchandise. Learn the different approaches and processes, and continue to bring happiness to your customers.

An efficient training method that gets twice the result with half the effort

Next, Teacher Wally introduced Kimberly Devlin, the top training expert from the United States. She has more than twenty years of training experience and has a high reputation in the industry, especially in the fields of online and offline training and auxiliary tool development. Currently serving as the president of two training and development companies, he also designs training programs for Fortune 500 companies and is frequently invited to participate in major industry conferences as a speaker.

Her new book “Same Training, Half the Time: Delivering Results for Busy Learners” talks about the training method of getting twice the result with half the effort, so it is certainly worth a read! This book will teach you to use a systematic method to complete the training content in only half the time, and achieve training results that far exceed expectations. The key to her high-efficiency training model lies in the following slide:

Well, even Teacher Wally said he was fascinated by her style, which shows how awesome Kimberly Devlin is! By the way, does anyone want to form a book club with me?

The rise and application of micro-learning

In addition, Teacher Wally also introduced Carla Torgerson’s latest concepts on micro-learning, which I found refreshing.

Carla defines microlearning as “anything that can be consumed in five minutes or less.” Helpful examples include: five minute videos or interactive eLearning modules, text five pages or shorter, or a medium-sized infographic.

In a world where attention is a rare commodity, trainers and talent development professionals often need to consider many details when developing training courses for employees. One of the effective methods is microlearning. In other words, training is provided in a “one bite” way.

According to a survey of 144 talent development professionals by ATD Research, it was found that respondents believed the average maximum length of microlearning was approximately thirteen minutes. However, based on average data from actual participants, the length of microlearning should ideally be kept around ten minutes.

Hearing this, I also thought it was a coincidence. Because the online course “Content Power” I launched last year happens to be about ten minutes in length per unit, which is in line with the trend of micro-learning!

That’s right! Friends who are interested can also watch the above video when you have time and listen to Carla Torgerson talk about the four directions in which micro-learning can be applied!

Inspiration from AL accelerated learning method

The amount of information in this sharing session is too great, so I will share it with you here first. In the second half, the [AL Accelerated Learning Method] (https://www.alcenter.com/) shared by three industry elites also brought me a lot of impact and gains.

Simply put, Accelerated Learning is a creative teaching method based on scientific research on brain science and psychology. It can fully unleash and mobilize learners’ learning potential, thereby significantly improving the speed and quality of learning.

The AL trainer is more facilitator than presenter.

In the final AL demonstration activity led by Mr. Wally, I also took the opportunity to communicate with Lin Jiahui, Vice President of ZTE Security. Not only did I ask her about the mysteries of AL, but I also exchanged our views. It can be said that I benefited a lot.

Looking back at the “2019 ATD and AL Sharing Session” event this afternoon, I felt that the development from micro-learning to educational technology has begun to undergo earth-shaking changes, and a new revolution in training and education has begun… I am really grateful to Teacher Wally, [Amy Ho] (https://www.facebook.com/amy.ho.tw) and several AL seniors and sisters for their assistance and sharing, so that we can share this rare feast of knowledge in the afternoon.
