When it comes to personal branding, I believe everyone is familiar with it. In the past, I have shared with you some methods and information about building a personal brand.
I am very happy tonight. I have the opportunity to participate in the lecture “[Build yourself as a brand, enhance competitiveness, and expand influence] (https://www.accupass.com/event/2401040924564556624250)” hosted by the Strategic Thinking Business School. Come and listen to my sister Cynthia from National Taiwan University share how she builds herself as a brand?
In this [AI era] (https://www.vistacheng.com/2024/02/embracing-the-ai-era.html), which is full of opportunities and challenges, the career path of each of us cannot be smooth sailing. Myself included, I have also experienced many major turning points. Recently, many friends have been talking about issues related to talent, family background and hard work, which also touched me deeply. I guess many friends may have had similar experiences. These turning points (or even setbacks) are actually good nutrients and are often opportunities that push us to embark on the second curve of life.
The concept of “Second Curve” mentioned by the senior student actually comes from this book called “[The Second Curve: New Thinking of Social Reconstruction]” (https://www.books.com.tw/exep/assp.php/vista/products/0010862673?ut m_source=vista&utm_medium=ap-books&utm_content=recommend&utm_campaign=ap-202402)”, the author reveals the similarities between our lives and the brand life cycle.
The school sister mentioned that a typical career life cycle is roughly as follows: around the age of 25, we begin to enter the society and enter the growth stage; between the ages of 35 and 40, we enter the achievement stage; followed by the maturity stage, at this time we may face a career plateau or even a decline stage. Therefore, we should start planning our second curve when we enter the career achievement period.
She also specifically mentioned that even if you are over 35 years old, you can still start embarking on this [Hero’s Journey] at any time (https://zh.wikipedia.org/zh-tw/Hero’s Journey). After all, everyone has their own unique rhythm and time zone in life.
The senior sister pointed out that in her career coaching experience, many corporate brands seek help because they need a second curve for brand. It’s like no one knows when the first curve of the smooth sailing will go downhill? Therefore, diversification and risk diversification are necessary for all brands.
Career development is not a question of whether or not, so everyone may have diversified development, and naturally there is no so-called right or wrong. In other words, everyone needs to find the answer that works best for them.
In the process of building personal brand, it is even more necessary to have an open and tolerant psychological quality. The senior sister reminds us that except for things that are expressly prohibited by law, there are no absolutely correct answers in the world. Recently, there have been some controversial cases regarding personal branding in society, which also highlights that even if you have the ability to navigate the legal ambiguity, you still need to make wise decisions.
So, how do you go about building your own personal brand? The school sister proposed five steps:
- Know yourself: Understand your interests, expertise and values.
- Understand the market: Know what needs and opportunities exist in the market.
- Analyze the market: Find out what unique service or product you can offer.
- Create value: Develop your skills and services to make them attractive.
- Deliver value: Share your value through various channels, such as social media or professional network.
The schoolmate said that the reason why she chose to talk about personal branding with everyone is very simple:
I receive cases through personal branding, and I find that many personal branding coaches only focus on self-media operations. To me, personal branding is so much more than that. It is an art that encompasses all aspects of a person.
If you think of yourself as a brand, you’ll have a better idea: What are the right things to do? What things should not be done? Only after you have a clear understanding of yourself can you understand what your position is? Where is your market? Who is your target audience? And, why do they need you?
Finally, the senior sister reminded everyone: As the saying goes, “Rome was not built in a day,” building a personal brand is not something that can be accomplished overnight. This is not a task that can be accomplished in a short time. It requires continuous self-discovery, market adjustment and value creation.
When you start this journey, please remember: every step you take is to help you go further and more steadily on the second curve of life.
By the way, finally, I will help my senior to promote the public class she is about to open [Build personal brand influence and increase personal career power]. Interested parties are welcome to sign up!
