Previously, I introduced the importance of punctuation marks in the article “Make good use of punctuation marks and write a beautiful chapter in life”. Next, I would like to use a practical case to explain that if you strengthen the use of punctuation marks, you can make your article read more sonorously and powerfully!
Yesterday, in the latest issue of the “Vista Writing Companion Program” LINE group, a partner, Miss KC🌬Miss Kecheng, asked me to help her read a newly written article. But Miss Cheng mentioned that she has made modifications according to my previous suggestions. I hope I can take the time to check it for her and see what parts still need to be strengthened?
From her blog, it is not difficult for me to find that Miss Kecheng has made great progress! This also shows that as long as you are willing, writing is not as difficult as everyone thinks! I took a look at her article. Generally speaking, it is very good. Only the punctuation marks still have room for improvement.
So, in addition to continuing to give some suggestions to Miss Kecheng, I also helped her revise the first three paragraphs of the article. I have obtained her permission to share with you the actual method of strengthening punctuation marks, and also provide it as a reference for everyone!
The first three paragraphs of the original text
My mother often recalls my kindergarten days: At that time, I could always wake up by myself, tidy myself up, and then go downstairs alone to wait for the pick-up stroller. When I reached school age, my brother and I went to school together, holding hands with each other. Apart from him, I never walked with anyone else. When I was in college, I studied while working. I had my own transportation and traveled between school and work day after day.
When I first entered the workplace, because I didn’t want to cause trouble or ask questions, I always stood quietly and observed and learned. Being an introvert, I spend most of my time alone, not disturbing others or causing trouble to others. However, perhaps it is precisely because of this independent personality that I get along well with most people and gain good interpersonal relationships.
However, after staying in the office for a period of time, I gradually lost my nostalgia for the office chair that gradually became unfit for sitting. Unfortunately, people cannot live in a place without a ceiling, but it did not slow down my pursuit of the joy of life. So I arranged a long trip for myself. After ensuring that I could land safely, I was already on the way to take off. It was the first independent flight in my life.
The first three paragraphs after modification
My mother often recalls my kindergarten days: At that time, I could always wake up by myself, tidy myself up, and then go downstairs alone to wait for the pick-up stroller. When I reached school age, my brother and I went to school together, holding hands with each other; except for him, I never walked with anyone else. When I was in college, I studied while working. I had my own transportation and traveled between school and work day after day.
In this passage, commas are used to separate slight pauses, and colons are used to elicit memories of the mother. The semicolon is used to separate the two related but independent clauses “Hand in hand with each other” and “I have never walked with anyone but him.”
When I first entered the workplace, because I didn’t want to cause trouble or ask questions, I always stood quietly and observed and learned. As an introvert, I spend most of my time alone, not disturbing others or causing trouble to others. However, perhaps it is precisely because of this independent personality that I get along well with most people and gain good interpersonal relationships.
The punctuation marks in this passage are used to express the flow and transition of thoughts. Commas are often used to separate phrases and clauses, and “but” introduces a twist on the previous description.
However, after staying in the office for a period of time, I gradually lost my nostalgia for the office chair that became unsteady. Unfortunately, people cannot live in a place without a ceiling, but it did not slow down my pursuit of the joy of life. So I arranged a long trip for myself. After ensuring that I could land safely, I was already on the way to take off. It was the first independent flight in my life.
In the sentences of this paragraph, “however” and “but” are both used as transition words to mark a change in thinking. A semicolon is used to separate two complex clauses, while a comma is used to separate within a clause.
Overall, the use of these punctuation marks not only makes sentences flow more smoothly, but also helps readers understand the emotion and meaning contained in the text. It is also the first three paragraphs of this article. If you carefully compare the differences before and after modification, you should be able to find that strengthening the punctuation marks will not only make your article read more smoothly, but also make this article more sonorous and powerful!
How to start learning punctuation marks
At this point, you may want to review your punctuation marks. In addition to recommending that you set aside half an hour to read the revised version of the “[Punctuation Handbook] (https://language.moe.gov.tw/001/upload/files/site_content/m0001/hau/haushou.htm)” issued by the Ministry of Education, I also make the following suggestions for your reference on how to learn punctuation marks on your own:
- Understand the basic punctuation rules: First, learn the basic purpose of each punctuation mark. For example, commas are used to separate elements in a sentence, periods are used to end declarative sentences, question marks are used to end questions, etc.
- Read and observe: Read books in a variety of genres, paying special attention to how the author uses punctuation to enhance the narrative. Try to analyze why certain punctuation marks are used in certain places. If you have a writer or journalist you particularly admire, watch them use it too!
- Practical application and practice: Try to actively apply these rules in your own writing. As you practice writing, pay special attention to your use of punctuation, and try out different punctuation to see how they change the meaning and tone of your sentences.
- Get feedback: Ask relatives, friends, and colleagues around you to read your work and provide feedback on the use of punctuation. This can help you understand how readers interpret your article and understand the importance of punctuation.
- Continuously learn to write: The rules of punctuation are not eternal and may occasionally change as languages and writing styles change. Therefore, it is very important to continue to learn and adapt to new standards.
