I am a writing coach (opens in a new tab), and I have been teaching copywriting courses in the public sector, enterprises, and universities for a long time. Since opening the 6 online writing classes “Write Your Own Story (opens in a new tab)” under UDN’s “Orange Generation (opens in a new tab)”, not only have I been fortunate enough to meet many excellent mature friends, it seems that I have also opened a window for myself.

I remember someone said that we cannot change the length of life. This is indeed an irreversible reality. But after reading the articles written by everyone, I deeply felt the magnificent lives of many people, which fully demonstrated the breadth and depth of life.

I am happy to see that everyone has the courage to self-challenge (opens in a new tab) and write their own life stories, but I also find that many people only write based on impulse, and once the enthusiasm fades, they cannot continue. Stopping writing is a common problem for many people when writing, and it can be said to be a fatal injury to the development of writing habits.

Separate writing time and daily life

If you also want to improve your writing skills, you can strengthen your motivation by establishing a sense of ritual (opens in a new tab). In the book “The Little Prince”, it was mentioned (opens in a new tab): “The sense of ritual is to make one day different from other days, or one moment different from other moments.”

Well, what are writing habits (opens in a new tab)? Simply put, it’s the series of actions you perform before sitting down to write. It’s as simple as making a cup of coffee or playing your favorite music CD to quickly put you into a state of focus so you can devote yourself to writing.

Someone abroad conducted a survey on a group of writers and found that they deliberately separated their writing time from their daily life. It is understood that many writers not only spend time conceiving content, but also think about their creative environment, the state of the stationery used, the most productive time of the day, and even many other factors in order to create the best work.

The American best-selling author Stephen King (opens in a new tab), who is familiar to many people, has a unique writing ritual. He takes vitamins between 8 and 8:30 every morning, listens to the music he chooses, and then begins to sort out the manuscripts at hand. He repeated these things day after day to strengthen his motivation to write.

Cultivate creativity and benefit brain power

The Jewish writer Neil Gaiman (opens in a new tab), who is well-known in the literary world for his works such as “Stardust” and “American Gods”, said: “I try to make every writing project a success. Change my life. Writing with a pen is good because it slows me down enough to make my handwriting legible. In addition, I often use two pens with different colors of ink, so I can intuitively know how many words I write every day.”

I really like Stephen King’s views on Practice Writing (opens in a new tab). He said: “Writing should start from the concrete and small things in life. Reading more is the key!”

I encourage everyone to write together. If you can first develop your own writing ritual and think of it as a beneficial habit, you can give your life more focus, be ready to think in the most creative ways, and embrace writing in the most productive ways.
