How to create a personal writing style
Today, let’s talk about: How to create a personal writing style?
However, before we officially start talking about writing style, we may have to first understand what style is? Simply put, style is the embodiment of a person’s personality, tastes, thoughts, ways of thinking, values, lifestyles, habits and other characteristic attributes.
So, what is writing style?
According to Wikipedia’s Introduction, writing style refers to the way the author expresses text content in a language style unique to the person, era, school or country when writing.
Of course, everyone’s writing style often differs. However, the more popular writing style is nothing more than: concise, concise and meaningful, which can make readers interested and concentrate on reading.
A writer with a unique writing style, even if his works are not signed, can still be identified by many readers who are familiar with his works based on some characteristics. Just like when everyone sees Haruki Murakami or Kei Higashino My works should be easy to identify!
To put it bluntly, it is because these writers have long integrated their own personalities, interests, thoughts, ways of thinking, values, lifestyles, habits and other characteristics into their works.
Everything from the structure of the article, language and rhetoric, argumentation methods, and character description methods are enough to show the different characteristics of each person. These writing characteristics are reflected in the process of writing articles, including details such as subscripts and rhetoric, which can reflect one’s own writing style.
Speaking of which, I wonder if you might be curious. Why should you develop your own writing style if you can’t eat style?
The author of “Awareness of Writing Style: How to Write Good English Writing” [Stephen. Pink](https://zh.wikipedia.org/zh-tw/%E6%96%AF%E8%92%82%E8%8A%AC%C2%B7%E5%B9%B3%E5%85% 8B) tells us: “Style can at least add beauty to the world. For a cultured reader, a neat sentence, a gripping metaphor, a humorous whisper, and an elegant wording are one of the greatest pleasures in life.”
In fact, you don’t need to think about style too complicated. It is true that each of us is an independent individual, so naturally we will have our own style. Thinking about it from another angle, style is actually a very simple thing. It manifests itself in writing. No matter what you feel or experience, there will always be some clues revealed between the lines…
Natalie. Gao Bai in her “[Wild Writing](https://www.books.com.tw/exep/assp.php/vis ta/products/0010359875?utm_source=vista&utm_medium=ap-books&utm_content=recommend&utm_campaign=ap-202201)” said: “Establishing style requires a thorough understanding of yourself, because style comes from within…”
She further explained: “If style is the product of digesting such life experiences, it will not only come from the mind, but should come from a person’s whole body.”
I think, Nathalie. Gao Bai’s meaning is very clear. Everyone’s life is indeed a song full of charm.
This also reminds me of the 6 online writing classes I helped plan for the United Daily News [Orange Generation] “Write Your Own Story”. I encouraged all students to seize the moment and write down the precious memories in their lives. Because these wonderful life experiences and memories have the opportunity to be transformed into words with a unique style.
Having said that, if we can create our own writing style, in addition to strengthening our communication and expression abilities, we can also make our articles more eye-catching and engaging.
So, how do we create our own writing style?
First of all, I would like to encourage everyone to read, listen and think more. By observing other people’s works, it not only helps to broaden your knowledge, but also allows you to discover many angles and methods of observing things. At the beginning, I learned from imitation, made progress through trial and error, and also thought in creation… Of course, all these efforts require a lot of time and energy to accumulate, but I believe that I can slowly find a writing model that suits me, and then gradually internalize it and turn it into my own unique characteristics.
Of course, it is not enough to read more, listen more and think more, we need deliberate practice. In addition to writing a lot, I would also like to suggest that you don’t just stop at the description stage.
For example, summer has been a hot tourist season recently, and everyone should have many opportunities to travel or have dinner together. When you write a travel or food diary, can you not just describe how fun a certain facility is? Or which restaurant is delicious? Can you first listen to your inner voice and try to start from a different perspective? Instead of using gorgeous or vague words to describe some details that are actually unimportant.
As a reader──actually, I want to know the [unique point of view] of each creator (https://www.content.tw/writing/viewpoint).
Another example is when sharing the professional knowledge you are good at, can you give some more practical cases? Or, you can use storytelling to get the point across. It is even a good idea to add some charts to the article. For example, the lazy bag, [Knowledge Graphic Card] (https://www.vistacheng.com/2020/12/knowledge-graphic-card.html), which have been very popular in recent years, can make people understand the key points at a glance and quickly grasp the key points.
Next, you can try to find that “sentence that belongs to you.” When you have your own writing logic and process, your unique writing style will slowly form…
If you want to develop a writing style, you need to practice over a long period of time. It cannot be done overnight. So, on the one hand, I want to remind you to be patient, on the other hand, I also want to encourage you, let us write and improve ourselves together. Okay?
By the way, do you have your own writing style or rituals? Welcome to share with me! Of course, if writing makes you feel stressed or there are some bottlenecks that you cannot break through, you are welcome to leave a message to me. I will be happy to study with you to see how to solve these problems!
