[Why we reprint this article] Think about your own positioning, not just looking at the present, but also including past and future perspectives. Similarly, you can also observe your own positioning from the perspective of others. By thinking about the positioning comparison between yourself and your opponents, you can more clearly reason about the possible ideas between yourself and others. Teacher Liu Yiyou uses the stakeholder relationship matrix to explain to everyone how to think from others’ perspective and make more comprehensive inferences.

When talking about business presentations, logical thinking or data analysis, the author will emphasize the importance of “empathy”. In fact, any activity related to people is inseparable from this essence.

Perspective thinking is not only the transposition of “role”, but also the transposition of “time”

If we expand the two aspects of “people” and “time” to discuss empathy, we can use the following matrix diagram to illustrate. Some people call it Jiugongge, but I don’t recommend calling it that. Why? The Nine-Gong Grid is only the most basic form. It can also be subdivided into the Twelve-Gong Grid, the Sixteen-Gong Grid, or even more, but it will become difficult to explain.

Develop a perspective-taking matrix diagram using the two aspects of “role” and “time” (drawn by Liu Yiyou)

Empathy means projecting oneself (me) into the role of the other person (you) to think, and at the same time projecting oneself (me) into the role of the outside world (him) to think, covering as many aspects as possible. Based on this principle, the so-called stakeholder matrix can be further developed.

However, only considering the current section may not be objective, so the author added the aspect of “time” and subdivided it into three details: past, present, and future.

Editor’s addition: The eight aspects refer to the 3X3 matrix formed by the two aspects “you, me, him” and “past, present, future”. After deducting the initial aspect combination of “me/now” in the middle, we need to expand the remaining eight aspect combinations we think about.

The me now can dialogue with the me in the past, recall the original intention, reflect on the imperfections, and then revise the current choices. The me now can talk to the me in the future. Looking at the present five or ten years from now, will there be different choices? What we are obsessed with and attach importance to now, will it still be the same in the future? You can figure out what’s really important.

The me now can talk to you now, why do you think so? By talking to you in the past and you in the future, you can understand your thinking context and future vision, and then understand your behavior, speculate on your possible choices, and even affect your next actions.

Thinking from the perspective of history will help you understand people’s hearts and human nature

Now I can talk to the world in the past, present and future. To put it simply, I can understand history. Why is history important? Because we can learn from the past and know the present. People’s thoughts change but human nature remains unchanged, and historical scenes will only reappear again and again. The more we understand about history, it is equivalent to having a big data database of human nature.

As long as you can simply apply the eight aspects of perspective taking, you can often see things more clearly. When you feel confused, try this method.

Editor’s addition: I mentioned to you before in Content Hacker Lecture that to be a content hacker, you must also have “[Internal Perspective](https://www.contenthacker.today /2017/12/20171206-lecture-note1.html)” and “External Perspective”. The “Perspective Thinking” provided by teacher Liu Yiyou can be used to strengthen our “external perspective” (you and him); at the same time, it also expands the scope of reasoning of the “internal perspective” through the time dimension. It is recommended that you apply empathy in the planning of content marketing.
