What is a facilitator?
This afternoon, I came to [Uxrich Digital Consulting Co., Ltd.] (http://userxper.com/cht/index.html) that I am familiar with (unfortunately, due to the weekend, the two [founders] (https://www.facebook.com/uxrichard) are not in the office). The main reason is to listen to Fu Dunguo’s lecture on Upward Management of the “Meeting Communication and Guidance” course.
For me, because of giving lectures, taking on projects, or serving as a consultant, I inevitably have to attend meetings from time to time. I even attend meetings more frequently than before when I served in the media or Internet industry. Therefore, it is necessary to have the opportunity to learn Meeting Communication and Guidance from Mr. Dun Guo; especially when meeting with bosses and senior managers of various companies, how to effectively convey your views and ideas is a whole new skill!
At the beginning, Mr. Dun Guo asked everyone to think about what are the annoying or disturbing phenomena during normal meetings? Or have you encountered any problems that resulted in ineffective results? During the discussion among the members of the three groups, today’s course began.

He first introduced the concept of facilitation to everyone. To put it simply, it means using designed language and procedures to lead the team to dialogue together to produce consensus, creativity and learning.
The role of [facilitator] (http://www.open-quest.com/facilitation/index.asp) can allow teams and organizations to operate more effectively. By providing process leadership, the facilitator helps the group to more easily achieve task understanding and decision-making. The facilitator focuses on the group and the work it needs to accomplish, and its role is to assist and guide, not to control.
Therefore, Teacher Dunguo also reminds everyone that facilitators usually do not involve the content and decision-making operations of the team.
Make good use of supportive language and versatile sentence patterns
From the role of a facilitator to the core theme of today’s course, Teacher Dunguo also encouraged everyone to make good use of “supportive language”. For example, you can use the following sentences more often in meetings:
*Thank you Vista for this idea, it reminds me of…
-
I echo the idea of Vista…
-
I’ll add some more ideas for Vista…
-
I’ll add something to the Vista idea…
Teacher Dun Guo also shared with you two universal sentence patterns for guidance, including:
-
Could you say a little more?
-
Can you give an example?
Next, Teacher Dunguo mentioned the three streams of guidance, which are language content, program structure and flow atmosphere. Among the three, I am most curious about the flow atmosphere, and I also want to know how to make the atmosphere in the conference room gradually change from unfamiliar to natural and warm, but not too divergent.
The focus of flow is to proceed step by step, and divergence also takes time to brew.

Application of ORID focus discussion method
Teacher Dun Guo also spent a lot of time introducing ORID (focused discussion method) to everyone. In fact, ORID can be used in many situations, such as teachers’ questions to students in class, communication between supervisors and subordinates in the workplace, and daily article writing, etc. In a word, ORID can be regarded as a method and process, but the most important thing is the purpose.
You must learn to listen before you know how to express.
If you are interested in ORID, you can also refer to the following briefing:
ORID Focused Discussion Method - An Introduction to Vernacular Chinese from Chuang Shu-Ting
In addition to the aforementioned third-rate guidance and ORID, Teacher Dun Guo also used [Elephant and the Rider] (https://www.taaze.tw/sing.html?pid=11100222456) to make an analogy to help us understand the subtle relationship between emotion and reason. The teacher also reminded everyone to use empathy and curiosity, and to use emotional universal words when necessary to break through some communication difficulties. If you think about it carefully, this is somewhat similar to writing articles.
The balance between divergence and convergence
The most touching part today is actually the discussion of divergence and convergence. In the past, people may have felt that divergence was not good, but if you just restrain yourself during a meeting, it may not necessarily be a good thing. Therefore, appropriate divergence and convergence can actually help communication and persuasion. The point is to be able to modularize proposals into pieces, generate options, and even co-create solutions with clients, executives, or partners in meetings together.

Finally, in addition to thanking Teacher Dunguo, I would also like to thank my partners in the same group today, including: Little Yang, Jerry, Sharlin, Yongxue, and Bolin. Thanks to the brainstorming of these outstanding partners, not only did I have a wonderful weekend afternoon, but also because our group won the first place in the competition, everyone was happy!
