Open Leadership” is the latest masterpiece of Charlene Li (http://www.charleneli.com/open-leadership/), the author of the well-known book “Groundswell”. It explains how leaders must let go in order to succeed. Because it caught up with the craze of community management, this book received special attention. Therefore, I initially recommended it in [HPX Website Planning Reading Club] (https://www.facebook.com/groups/hpx.bookclub/), and it immediately received an enthusiastic response, which also led to the establishment of the “Open Leadership” reading club.

On the evening of September 6th, we held the first reading party of this book at the apartment coffee. In addition to meeting the partners who will study this book together in the future, Cheng Xiaoyuan and Douny Yang were also responsible for introducing the first chapter “Does Control Still Work?” that night.

Being open should be not a mantra or philosophy, but a considered, rigorous approach to strategy and leadership that yields real results.

Chapter 1 explains why further openness is inevitable in the face of increasingly widespread social technologies. The author explains how the rise of consumer power will impact companies such as United Airlines; and then provides an in-depth introduction to how US President Barack Obama managed a team of millions of volunteers during the presidential election.

Simply put, the concept the author wants to express is that when business leaders embrace social technology, the most important success factor is an open mind. In other words, leaders are not just professional and authoritative, they must also know how to let go at the right time, in the right place, and appropriately.

Here, special thanks to Douny Yang for sharing the briefing he produced. Now, let’s discover the secrets of open leadership!
