On my birthday, I received a copy of “1% of Effort, Wins 99% of People: Using Gaming Strategies to “Play” into Work” as a gift from the publishing house. The founder of Japan’s PTT, which has 10 million users, has successfully learned from “precision loafing”. 》This book, I secretly thought, might be a birthday gift from God, right?
At first glance, the title of this book is really eye-catching. It has a bit of a non-startling tone, and it feels more like the subtitles used by some content farms. However, if you have a little knowledge and understanding of the author of this book, you will know that [Hiroyuki Nishimura] (https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiroyuki Nishimura), this famous young entrepreneur in Japan, really has this tone… Well, he can be regarded as a person who combines words and deeds.
Hiroyuki Nishimura (Japanese: Hiroyuki Nishimura/にしむら ひろゆき Nishimura Hiroyuki, November 16, 1976 -) is Japan[Online Forum](https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E7%B6%B2%E8%B7%AF%E8%A B%96%E5%A3%87) The founder and former manager of “2ch”, current administrator of 4chan, Internet entrepreneur, self-help book author and TV media personality. Born in Kanagawa PrefectureSagamihara City. Commonly known as “Hiroyuki” (ひろゆき). He once served as one of the directors of NICONICO Animation service provider Niwango. On the Internet, he is also known as the “Lunpo King” (“Lunpo” means refutation).
No wonder the author tells everyone as soon as he opens this book: If you want to pursue success, please quit chicken soup for the soul first.
Unexpected birthday gift
Seeing this, you may have aroused your curiosity about this book… But why do you think this book may be a birthday gift from God?
This is because the Traditional Chinese version of this book will be published in June 2021, so it can be called a new book! But if you usually have the habit of visiting bookstores, I guess it is not easy to see it in prominent places such as the section displaying new books or popular rankings. Therefore, if you don’t know this author, you will need a little luck and fate if you want to encounter this book!
For me, that’s admittedly the same. Although I originally knew Hiroyuki Nishimura, who founded 2channel (2ちゃんねる), I had read this book in a bookstore before, and I had some impressions. But after all, a large number of new books are published every month. No matter how fast I read, I can’t read all the books and finish every book smoothly.
Recently, because I was writing a recommendation preface for another new book, I had the honor to meet May, the editor of Da Shi Culture. Ms. Lin, thank you also for sending this book to me. I stopped at a convenience store this afternoon and spent less than an hour reading this book. I suddenly found that some of my views are similar to the author’s. For example, he mentioned the importance of positioning. Isn’t this what I usually say to my classmates in Writing Class and Marketing Class?
However, this book is not so “taken for granted”. There is also a lot of content in the book that opened my eyes and was even enlightened or stimulated by the author’s remarks.
To put it simply, this book does not talk about any major principles of life. It is almost all the author’s own insights. To put it bluntly, it means “I write with my hand and I speak with my mouth.” The content in the book is easy to understand and easy to read, but I dare say that you will gain something from any page you start reading.
Why can this book touch me? Maybe it has something to do with the “1% effort” mentioned in the title of the book! As I get older, I always feel like I’m accomplishing nothing. If life has to be sealed before it can be judged, then let’s not worry about success or failure for now. I consider myself a hard-working person. Many friends will agree with this, right?
But here comes the problem! Can problems be solved through hard work alone? Can you reap the fruits of success just by being tireless? The answer is obviously no. Therefore, the author believes that the initial thoughts and actions are very important, otherwise even if countless meaningless efforts are accumulated, it will not succeed.
Find a relatively favorable position
The author pointed out: “What you have to do is not to work hard, but to find your relatively advantageous position. Just like playing a game, you have to look for gaming equipment that can enter any place. In this way, even with only 1% of the effort, you can beat 99% of people.”
In the book, he vividly tells the story of “putting big rocks into the pot of life” (https://wreadit.com/@helatw/post/313320).
If we pour a few large rocks into the kettle, there will still be gaps to hold gravel and fine sand; but if we fill it with fine sand first, there will be no gaps to put in the big rocks. This story tells us: If your life is filled with too many unimportant things, you will not be able to hold important things.
The question is, what is the most important “big rock” to you? The author said that successful people will not try everything. They will first find out what is most important to them (big rocks), and never do things that make them feel stressed (fine sand).
This story reminds us that rather than working hard, we should think about our priorities. Well, this probably also echoes “choice is more important than hard work”!
Seek quantity first, then quality
At first glance, the author seems to be talking nonsense in the book, but some of his ideas are actually quite interesting. For example, he mentioned, “Instead of spending time asking for quality, you should ask for quantity first.” For me, who has a perfectionist tendency, I couldn’t hear this truth before! But now when I see the content of this paragraph, I not only nod my head like garlic, but also readily agree with this argument.
In addition, the author mentioned that his original intention to start a business was simply because it was fun to do! The author is even more proud that his strength is that he does not regard making money as his purpose, but thinks about “it might be interesting if he does this”, so he is confident that he will not lose to those whose purpose is to make money. Now for me, of course I still need to work hard to make money, but being able to do interesting things is also important! Having said that, in the coming year of 2022, if you also want to do something interesting with me (whether it is running a Podcast, making videos, writing books, developing products, engaging in charity activities, etc.), you are welcome to contact me!
Maybe it’s because birthdays were not celebrated in a fun way at home, and I didn’t pay much attention to this annual day in the past, let alone the sense of ritual. But now I think about it from another angle, and it’s quite interesting to think about birthdays!
A little insight into middle-aged life
Thank you for this unexpected birthday gift, which not only refreshed my outlook on life, but also made me realize that I don’t just have to work hard stupidly, but that I have to put my abilities in the right position so that my life can be fast and slow, and I can be more comfortable and at ease.
Rethinking where to invest “1% of your efforts” not only determines success or failure, but also affects the future direction. Of course, the answers are often not found in textbooks, and only you can determine your career development. Having said that, this is probably my little understanding of middle-aged life at this moment, right?
You have to be lazy but dedicated.
