Product Manager

Even now, I have long been traveling as a corporate consultant and professional lecturer, but when I dream back at midnight, I always think of my past as a product manager in Internet companies such as NetQing Technology and Sweet Potato.

I don’t know if it’s because I’m getting older, but I’ve recently begun to reflect on myself, and I have a lot of feelings. Looking back on the first half of my life, I lamented that I had changed many jobs and seemed to have accomplished nothing, but then I thought about it. I was able to enter these great companies at the early stage of my career and be able to work with excellent partners as a product manager… Think about it, it is really a lucky thing!

At that time, not only did we often have the opportunity to discuss with friends from Yahoo! and Sina.com, our business tentacles even extended to the other side, and we had contacts and interactions with BAT (Baidu, Tencent and Alibaba).

I think Wikipedia’s introduction to Product Manager is very interesting:

Product manager is a role that is difficult to define. If you have to define it in one sentence, then product manager is the person who serves the end users and is responsible for the entire life cycle of the product.

Thinking about it, this is indeed the case. Therefore, product managers have a heavy responsibility. Not only must they improve their own academic skills at any time, but they must also learn to communicate and dialogue with colleagues in different units such as engineers and business units.

Although I have not been a product manager for a long time, I still pay close attention to the trends in this field. I kind of forget how I met Evonne Tsai (Evonne Tsai), an outstanding girl from National Taiwan University. It seems that she first published articles on the Medium platform… Later, I watched her change career paths, and I also heard her mention writing a book in retreat.

Another very important point is to learn to see things from the boss’s perspective, which happens to be what I often refer to as “Putting yourself in others’ shoes”.

Thanks to the assistance of my friend Xie Mingyuan, Yifang was able to successfully interview many outstanding business owners, and the sharing of these rare cases is also a highlight of this book.

Three key points of “product power”

I often teach marketing courses outside, and I always mention the importance of “product strength” to my students. I think these three abilities seem very simple and basic, but they are actually the key to whether product managers can exert their function and value.

But I think this new book by Yifang is actually a good starting point, and it is also worthy of reference by friends who are interested in working as a product manager! The school girl told me that the reason why she created this online course is to help everyone learn the three key abilities of a product manager: in addition to accurately grasping the needs of the boss and customers, they must also further control the expectations of all parties and effectively manage the progress of the project.
