Fanggezi, a well-known content creation platform in Taiwan, invited Waki, the founder and webmaster of “Reading Outpost”, to participate in the evening of July 14th [vocus Fanggezi Chat] event, he talked about how he went from being an engineer working at TSMC to devoting himself to full-time writing and storytelling (https://vocus.cc/article/64b149fcfd8978000129fe22). In this lecture, Varkey not only generously shared the techniques of efficient creation, but also revealed to the outside world his journey into self-media entrepreneurship.

In addition to being the webmaster of “Reading Outpost”, Varkey also runs the podcast program “[What to Read Next]” (https://podcasts.appl e.com/tw/podcast/%E4%B8%8B%E4%B8%80%E6%9C%AC%E8%AE%80%E4%BB%80%E9%BA%BC/id1532820533)》is also quite popular. Many people know that Varkey worked at TSMC for ten years in the past, but he also has unique ideas in the field of efficient output and input, which is worthy of everyone’s attention and learning.

Start developing slash by running a blog

Varkey mentioned that he started developing slash when he was in his seventh year at TSMC. At that time, I started to invest in the operation of the blog “Reading Outpost”. In other words, from his seventh to tenth year working at TSMC, he started running a [reading community] (https://vocus.cc/article/5dfecac1fd897800018f06ba) by posting his reading experiences every week.

After blogging for about a year and a half, Varkey began recording the podcast program “[What to Read Next] (https://readingoutpost.com/podcast/)”, which also laid the foundation for his self-media expansion. After working for more than a year, Varkey made a very important decision, that is, he decided to leave TSMC after working for 10 years and resolutely devoted himself to the storyteller business.

It has been more than a year since Varkey left his job, but his entrepreneurial pace has not stopped. This year I started a new project, which is to record storytelling videos for YouTube. At first glance, it seems that it continues to revolve around the theme of books, but there are also many new self-media ideas and attempts at content types.

From the current point of view, Varkey has added a YouTube video channel, and then started to invest in the production and preparation of some online courses. At the same time, he is also writing the content of the next and even several new books.

For him, it is a blessing to be able to do something that he loves so much, and to be able to regard this as the main axis of his work and at the same time bring him income, it has become a career that Varkey is now devoted to full-time.

Waji mentioned that he originally worked in Hsinchu, but later transferred to Tainan in his seventh year of work. At that time, his relationship was not going well, and he had a cold war and conflict with his girlfriend. The cause of the incident was that he made his own decision at the time and said that he would be transferred from Hsinchu to Tainan, which made the other party feel that he was acting first and not being respected. That conflict point caused him to feel a little confused in life and emotionally unsatisfactory when he was working in Tainan. Then he was very busy at work. Because he came to a new factory, the work pressure was very high.

Find your passion

At that time, Varkey began to wonder if he could use some external resources to help him overcome this difficulty. At that time, he felt confused and wondered what the meaning of life was. Why are you so busy? Therefore, he wanted to start with reading and try to find the answer from the book. Therefore, at that time, Varkey began to look for some books recommended by everyone, hoping to find helpful solutions for work, interpersonal relationships and personal growth, and then achieve a better deployment.

Because he dabbled in many books, Varkey also started taking some notes while reading. In addition to writing down these good things, I also want to share them with everyone. Therefore, he began to publish his reading notes on Medium platform. After posting and posting, I found that sharing my reading experience like this has won the favor of many readers, and I started to leave comments and feedback, and some people also communicated through private messages.

For example, someone told Varkey that he had encountered such a problem, or had encountered similar problems in the workplace, work or life. This kind of interaction and communication has benefited Waki a lot. He feels that such sharing seems to be of great value to others. In addition to helping himself, it may also help others.

So after he wrote about 20 to 30 articles, Varkey began to seriously think about it. If he wanted to do this in the longer term, should he take it a little more seriously? Then, try to make it something that you can do for a long time.

Therefore, Waki decided to leave the Medium platform, began to study many issues about self-media management, and also considered setting up his own website. Soon, he decided to set up his own blog, and at the same time he also started making an e-newsletter, which meant collecting readers’ emails and then sending e-newsletters to everyone.

At the same time, he also opened a Facebook fan page, and opened Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest accounts. In other words, at that time, Waki opened all the most popular social media accounts on the market that everyone could imagine! Then, using some automated scheduling software, he began to publish his own reading experience through these social platforms. The most important thing is that Waki maintains the habit of starting to write his reading experience every week.

Looking back at the time when Varkey himself started doing slash, he felt like he was busy. Because when you work at TSMC, you will feel that when you are super busy at work, if you can have a little bit of luck when you get off work or before work, you can do something you like or do something you are interested in, such as writing an article, setting up a blog, and then using Canva to make a few pictures of golden quotes, and then send these things out. It is quite fun to think about it!

Manage self-media to adjust your body and mind and gain a sense of accomplishment

He felt that doing so would allow him to relax physically and mentally outside of work. And because you can adjust your body and mind through reading, and you can apply the content in the book to your own life after digesting it, you will feel that this is an act that is full of satisfaction and accomplishment.

Waji began to think that it was interesting to try to start a self-media business in this way, so he didn’t think it was a hardship. From then on, he started to work hard and regularly shared his reading experience with the outside world every week. He began to interact with everyone through his website and social media, and also joined many reading clubs on Facebook, PTT and LINE.

On the one hand, Varkey uses these societies to find books he likes, and he also selects books recommended by others or books that everyone is interested in; on the other hand, he also generously shares his reading experience with everyone, thereby achieving a mutually beneficial exchange. Therefore, Varkey just learned and made along the way, starting from a small reading blog “Reading Outpost” and developing his own storytelling business along the way.
