In today’s program, let me talk to you: How to write an excellent food journal?
First, let’s talk about what is a food journal? Speaking of food journals, I think everyone should be familiar with it. We can often see information about food experiences written by some people in some media, websites or blogs.
Because everyone often has the opportunity to have dinner with relatives and friends, in order to create a beautiful memory, many people will search for information online in advance, hoping to find a restaurant with beautiful lighting, a good atmosphere and a high CP value. Having said that, this is of course also the value of food journals.
Although I rarely eat out, I occasionally have dinner with friends, so I occasionally search online for food notes written by others. In addition, I teach writing in some companies, public departments, and universities, so I often read various articles written by students, including food notes.
I still remember that when I was helping students of the “Vista Writing Companion Program” correct their homework, one of my partners wrote a detailed food diary. After reading it, I wanted to follow the pictures and find time to experience it!
When it comes to Food Diary, how should you write it so that it is engaging? I think this is really a big question. Although I am not a food blogger, to be honest, the principles of writing are the same. If you are interested in becoming a food blogger, you can pay attention to today’s episode.
In order to share this topic with you, in addition to revisiting my past experience of writing food journals, I also did some homework online in advance. I found an article that mentioned that to write a good food review, you must write down the store information clearly; another article pointed out that you must attach photos. The reason is very simple, because only in this way can you “have pictures and truth”!
I agree that store information and photos are one of the indispensable elements of Food Journal. However, whether I look at it from the perspective of a customer or a writing coach, I feel that the most important thing about food notes is not these things, but what is the deepest impression this restaurant gives you? What’s the best experience or value? In other words, in addition to introducing the dishes and prices, during the meal, is there anything about this restaurant that moved you extremely?
Many bloggers are accustomed to using picture and text combination method to explain, taking pictures all the way from the restaurant entrance to the bathroom, and even the menu is not missed. The level of detail is admirable. But I think this way of writing food notes is a bit traditional, and it is not easy to leave a deep impression on readers. It is a pity that you have worked so hard to collect materials, records and write articles, but the result is like a traditional catalog.
Of course, I must admit that even the catalog has its value. After all, sometimes we just need to know the relevant information of the store, such as: the minimum purchase price, how long you can stay, whether there is Internet or sockets, etc.
However, I would feel a little pity if the food notes you worked so hard to write are like catalogues. Because catalogs are highly replaceable, I hope that the food notes you have worked so hard to write can have a unique perspective and bring more value to readers.
More importantly, if the reader only wants to read the catalog, he may not have any impression of the author who wrote this food note. Let’s think about it for a moment. If today you just want to search for some basic information about restaurants online, will you pay special attention to which website or blog the information comes from? Will you remember who the author is? I think, probably not! So, will you visit this website next time? It’s hard to say, it just depends on luck, right?
In the past, when I worked in the Internet industry, because I helped the company run the blog platform, I had seen many bloggers write various food notes with pictures and texts, but to be honest, the articles that left a deep impression on people were extremely limited.
Therefore, if you want to write a food journal, it is recommended to think about the following three questions first:
The first question is, who is your target audience? Think about which readers would be interested in or need your article?
Second question, what was your deepest feeling from this dining experience? What is the difference between this restaurant and other restaurants?
The third question is, what are the other highlights of the dining experience that you most want to share with everyone?
When you think clearly about these three questions, you will naturally be able to write your food diary based on the interests and needs of these readers.
Students who have taken my writing classes in the past know that I encourage everyone to write more of their own opinions. Although in today’s program, I remind everyone not to write a food journal like a traditional catalogue, food journals are inherently a very subjective style of writing, so I would also encourage you to write more and practice more.
Don’t be afraid that you won’t write well, just boldly write down the key points that come to mind! I think that as long as you write carefully based on your personal experience and work hard to write down the auspicious moments during the meal, this food diary will definitely bring unique value!
Of course, if you are willing to share your articles with me, you are also welcome to leave me a message. I’d be happy to take a look at your food notes and let’s work out what we can improve or do better!
