“Simon Learning Method” method) is a set of learning theories proposed by Professor Herbert Simon, the Nobel Prize winner in economics. To put it simply, he believes that a person with a basic foundation in a certain field can master any subject in half a year as long as he is really willing to work hard to learn.
Professor Simon’s discussion is based on the experimental results of psychology. It only takes one minute to one and a half minutes on average for a person to memorize a piece of information. Psychologists call such a piece of information a “chunk.” When people are learning, it will be more helpful to remember if they can split the knowledge to be mastered into different chunks. If you think chunking sounds a bit complicated, you can also think of it as knowledge points.
Professor Simon believes that the information contained in each subject can be broken down into approximately 50,000 chunks. Next, it’s just a matter of pure math! If we could memorize one chunk per minute, it would take about a thousand hours to understand fifty thousand chunks. If you study forty hours a week, it only takes about half a year to master a subject.

Compared with other learning methods on the market, the “Simon Learning Method” emphasizes learning by understanding the structure and organization of problems. When he first conceived this learning method, Professor Simon paid special attention to how learners organize information, analyze problems, perform pattern recognition, and perform reasoning and problem solving.
The core idea of “Simon Learning Method” is to regard the learning process as an information processing process. Learners first need to understand the structure and characteristics of the problem, then decompose the problem into smaller sub-problems, and look for rules and patterns to solve the problem. Through this structured learning method, learners can master knowledge and solve problems more effectively.
In other words, Professor Simon advocates that learners should actively participate in the learning process and encourage them to think and understand problems, rather than just passively receiving information.

Later, I got inspiration from the book “Atomic Habits” and got theoretical support from “Simon Learning Method”. So, I recently started practicing ultra jogging.
I broke down learning Super Jogging into the following six steps:
- Understand the problem: Clearly understand your fitness goals, such as increasing endurance, increasing speed, or losing weight, etc. At the same time, understand the challenges you may encounter during running, such as insufficient cardiopulmonary capacity, muscle fatigue, etc.
- Decompose the problem: Decompose running fitness into more specific sub-problems, such as increasing running frequency, improving speed or improving running technique. Through dismantling, it helps to clearly understand your own limitations and the details that need attention.
- Organize knowledge: Collect knowledge and resources about running and fitness, such as training plans, professional guidance, diet and nutrition, scientific research, etc. Organize these resources to help you develop a structured running training plan.
- Pattern recognition: Find running patterns and patterns that suit you, such as breathing rhythm, step frequency and stride control, etc. Focus on understanding these patterns and patterns to improve running efficiency and reduce the risk of injury.
- Reasoning and problem solving: Apply learned knowledge and models to actual running training.
