What is Alexa Internet?
Now when talking about Alexa, many people may think of a smart assistant launched by Amazon in the United States, which was originally used in the Amazon Echo smart speaker. It has the functions of voice interaction, music playback, to-do list, alarm clock, podcast, playing audio books, and providing weather, traffic, sports and other real-time information.
However, the protagonist of this article is not Amazon Alexa, but Alexa Internet Company, which has accompanied many old Internet users through the Web 1.0 and Web 2.0 eras. The only similarity between the two is that they are both related to Amazon.
Alexa Internet Analysis provides relevant information and page views of various websites, which is famous for its Alexa.com website. By collecting users’ Internet access information, we can collect statistics on website traffic and related information.
Alexa Internet Company is a subsidiary of Amazon, headquartered in San Francisco, California, USA. Founded in 1996 by Brewster Kahler and Bruce Gilliat. As an offshoot of the Internet Archive, it is supported by Jacqueline Safra’s Ettore investment. In 1999, Alexa was purchased by Amazon for approximately $250 million in stock.
Alexa.com officially announced the end of service
Just today, Amazon in the United States suddenly announced that Alexa.com, its global website ranking and analysis system that has celebrated its 25th anniversary, will terminate its services on May 1 next year (2022).
According to a statement on Alexa’s official website, “We founded Alexa Internet 25 years ago. After years of helping you find, reach, and convert digital audiences, we have now made the difficult decision to retire Alexa.com on May 1, 2022. Thank you for making us the go-to resource for content research, competitive analysis, and keyword research, and we are proud to serve all of our customers.”
The end of the traffic era
Seeing this, I almost wanted to shed tears of the times. I remember that when I worked for companies such as Sweet Potato and Digital Times Magazine, I used to keep an eye on Alexa data every day. Although I have left the Internet industry for a long time and no longer chase traffic data every day…but when I heard the news that Alexa Internet Company was about to bid farewell to the world stage, I couldn’t help but feel a little sad.
Of course, it is not surprising at all that Amazon of the United States chose to make this decision at this moment! After all, Alexa.com’s website views and influence have continued to decline in recent years, and the company’s revenue has also shown no improvement. Thinking about it calmly reminds us that it’s time to bid farewell to the era of pure traffic…
Thank you again Alexa.com, thank you for accompanying me through those wonderful Internet years.
