Whenever the phoenix flowers bloom, it is the season of singing Li Ge. This year, due to the raging COVID-19 epidemic, schools at all levels in Taiwan have been closed since mid-May. Graduation ceremonies that are usually held in June and July have naturally been canceled by many schools or replaced by other methods.
Speaking of graduation ceremonies, every friend must have attended several graduation ceremonies since childhood! Looking back at the past, you may have attended a graduation ceremony that was warm, serious, or so boring that it made you sleepy. But have you ever attended a graduation ceremony that felt like you were playing video games?
Create a virtual campus with Gather town
This afternoon, I had the honor to participate in a unique graduation ceremony and online farewell and welcome event, which was conducted using Gather town, a virtual social software. Teachers, students and alumni of the [National Taiwan University Institute of Industrial Engineering’s Executive Master’s Program in Interdisciplinary Integration and Innovation (EMS)] (https://ems.ntu.edu.tw/) transformed into game characters in the virtual world.
The Class 109 students who were responsible for preparing the entire online event not only built the graduation ceremony stage in Gather Town, but also spent more than thirty hours to move famous scenes on the National Taiwan University campus, such as Coconut Grove Avenue, Fu Zhong and Zuiyue Lake, online!

Through the interactive method of Gather town software, we can quickly shorten the distance between all teachers, students and alumni, and the entire process is supplemented by YouTube live broadcast, allowing everyone to watch the video in real time. This graduation ceremony was not only unique, but also left a deep impression on everyone. Chen Zhiwei The teacher said that this was the coolest graduation ceremony he had ever attended!
As an alumnus of the National Taiwan University Institute of Technology, I am very happy to have the opportunity to participate in this graduation ceremony and online farewell and welcome event. Especially when I see the 108-level juniors and girls being assisted by their families in completing their fringe plucking, it also means that everyone has completed their current master’s studies. This scene is really heartwarming and interesting! Especially through online video, it can bring everyone together across the barriers of time, space and geography, which is even more meaningful.
Due to the epidemic, we have become accustomed to using Zoom or Google Meet to teach or hold video conferences in the past two years. Naturally, some companies also use Gather town to hold meetings. Nowadays, when everyone has to move graduation ceremonies or achievement presentations online, if these digital tools can be used skillfully, it can also add a lot of fun.
Online graduation ceremonies have become a trend
Previously, I saw in the news that [Shulin Elementary School] (https://www.486word.com/page.php?pageid=JCUyIyE=&id=JCUxNDc0IyE=) in Qigu, Tainan adopts Gather town to hold the Online Graduation Ceremony. Coincidentally, the School of Creative Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara also held the [Graduation Ceremony] in Gather Town(https://ccs.ucsb.edu/events/2021-ccs-commencement).
In addition, the [Second Local Innovation Class of Xingwu University of Science and Technology] (https://ctee.com.tw/industrynews/cooperation/480716.html) also held a grand online graduation achievement exhibition through this software. Nowadays, [National Taiwan University Engineering Institute] (https://ie.ntu.edu.tw/Default.html) has also kept up with the trend of the times and held graduation ceremonies and welcome and send-off activities in Gather Town. It is indeed very creative!

Who said that you can only listen to lectures from the principal and teachers at the graduation ceremony, which is boring? After all, graduates are the protagonists of the graduation ceremony!
