A reader friend read my previous interview and wrote to ask me how I can do so many different jobs across borders. Therefore, I would like to ask me to give him some advice on career development.
It is embarrassing to say that, looking back on my past development, I have not only studied many different departments, such as Electronic Engineering, Information Management, [Information Communication](http://w ww.infocom.yzu.edu.tw/index.php/zh-tw/), Cultural Creativity and Industrial Engineering, etc., I have also done a variety of different jobs. For example, I started out as an electronic engineer, then moved to the Internet industry as a marketing planner, product manager, and producer, and then entered the media circle as a reporter and editor-in-chief. In recent years, I have been working as a columnist, corporate consultant, and professional lecturer.
When talking about career development, it reminds me of my own career path. Open Cambridge English Dictionary, the above explanation is:
the way that you progress in your work, either in one job or in a series of jobs.
Compared with some of my friends who only focus on one or two jobs throughout their lives, when I look back on my past work experience, I feel a little embarrassed. But having said that, although these jobs with different attributes are very different in field, they are also very challenging, and they naturally bring me a lot of experience and nutrients.
If I had to choose again, it’s hard to say whether I would just focus on one job, or would I want to try a variety of different possibilities? But one thing I am sure of is that if I could go back to the time when I had just graduated from college, in addition to considering the valuable experiences of my elders and those who had been there, I would also like to listen more to my own inner voice.
The reason is very simple, because only you know where your true interests and passions lie, and only you know whether the professional skills you have learned during your studies are enough to serve on the table, or even used as a tool for eating?
When young people look for jobs, they will inevitably encounter some misunderstandings or blind spots. I have also experienced these stages myself. For example, some people are easily tempted by fame or salary, and particularly aspire to those well-known companies or foreign companies; there are also some people who are less determined and follow the crowd when they hear others say which industry has good prospects, trying to squeeze into that narrow door.
This also reminds me of a few months ago when my niece finished her graduate studies in France and planned to return to Taiwan to find an internship related to marketing. At that time, I helped her read her autobiography, and also accompanied her to prepare for the interview. I even helped her with sand table simulations and simulated the interview process… Well, it was really touching!
To be honest, it was just a kid looking for a job as an intern, but the test questions these companies gave her made me feel like they were looking for a senior marketing executive. This incident not only illustrates the current situation of work competition in today’s society, but it is not difficult to imagine the subtle mentality of the employer.
But in any case, for young people, these failed or successful job search experiences are indeed valuable learning opportunities. Therefore, I don’t plan to help too much. I hope that my niece can work hard and find a way on her own. I only gave some necessary guidance and suggestions during the process, and luckily she was successfully admitted.
If you are now preparing to apply for a job or want to seek opportunities to change careers, I would like to give you a few suggestions:
First of all, please take inventory what are your advantages and strengths, and what resources do you have? For example, what professional skills are you good at, and have you made any great friends? You know, connections are also a part of resources.
