Recently, I seem to have a close relationship with TSMC, a well-known company. Last week, I just helped a group of TSMC executives do education training. In the past two days, I started reading the latest book “Yield of Thinking: TSMC Taught Me Efficiency Working method, think and solve problems like an operator》.
The so-called yield rate refers to the proportion of good products after deducting defective products from the products actually produced by the manufacturer. For example, if Company A actually produces 1,000 products this month, but up to 100 of them are defective, then the yield rate of Company A’s products this month is only 90%.
In the past, when talking about yield, everyone would immediately think of the product manufacturing process, especially in high-tech fields, such as semiconductor, automobile or computer industries. When the yield rate of a certain product is low, we often find ways to improve it and thereby improve production or operations. But, have you ever thought about it? The thoughts in our minds actually also have yield.
Since thinking also has a yield rate, it means that it can be continuously improved and innovated through some methods just like the product yield rate!
However, not everyone has the opportunity to work in a world-class company such as TSMC, but we are so lucky to have a glimpse into the thinking of outstanding workers through the works of Teacher Peng Jianwen.
Now, you already know that the level of thinking quality is very important, because it is not only a number, but also affects the level of achievement in life. So, how can we improve our thinking efficiency?
Teacher Peng Jianwen recommends that everyone strengthen four kinds of thinking skills, and then develop the [business thinking] of operators (https://www.vistacheng.com/2020/05/product-thinking-and-why-it-matters.html):
-
Product thinking: clearly understand what your own products will look like in the market. If you know how to think about various possibilities from the product side, your thinking will not be limited to “I am just a worker on the production line.”
-
Market thinking: The ultimate goal of a product is the market. In addition to the product aspect, you must also think about the market aspect and understand changes in market trends. Take an in-depth look at the future development of this job from the market side.
-
Financial thinking: Maybe not everyone needs to delve into the three major financial statements (profit and loss balance sheet, balance sheet, cash flow statement), but the basic concepts of cost and revenue are absolutely necessary.
-
Competitor thinking: I often hear supervisors ask: What is our market share in the industry? What’s the highest ranking? What is the market share of your competitors? How to surpass your opponent? These answers are by no means just a number. Thinking about greater possibilities, reviewing and innovating, and making continuous progress are the real meaning behind the questions.
For me, this book not only provides a detailed methodology, but also brings together Mr. Peng’s past work experience and corporate coaching cases. It can be said to be a good book that combines theory and practice. Read “[Yield of Thinking: TSMC taught me efficient working methods, thinking and solving problems like an operator]” (https://www.books.com.tw/exep/assp.php/vista/products/0010898554?utm_source= vista&utm_medium=ap-books&utm_content=recommend&utm_campaign=ap-202108)》allows us to draw on the successful experience of excellent companies, and to stand on the shoulders of giants to see further and continue to move forward.
Thinking of my own career development, it is really like crossing the river by feeling the stones. Therefore, I also agree with what Teacher Peng said: All roads in the workplace are actually constantly revised and revised. Only progress can prevent regression.
There are often no standard answers in life, and there are thousands of paths to success. To put it bluntly, all of this is really just a choice. But if possible, I hope to work with you to improve the quality of life; in this way, our lives will be more colorful and happier!
