Date: December 18, 2020 (Friday) 9:30-11:30 am Location: Yipin Bookstore, Taipei City. Participants (clockwise): Vista, White Bear (Qin Zhenjia), Tong Shangwei, Happy Cloud, Dear John, Dolphin Flying, Smile, Foreman Jian and Mr.6
“RE Meetup Internet People Gathering” is a gathering event for Internet veterans jointly organized by veteran Internet people Vista and Mr.6.
Some of the friends who grew up with the Internet are friends who have known each other on the Internet since the Web 2.0 era. Time flies, and ten years have passed. We really want to know how our friends are doing - especially in this year when the COVID-19 epidemic is raging, we miss you all very much. Therefore, Vista) and Mr.6 decided to hold a long-lost party at the end of 2020, looking forward to seeing some old friends.
Before half past nine, friends started arriving one after another. When the event started, I took the lead, saying hello to everyone, and taking the opportunity to open up the conversation. Vaguely, there is a feeling of “The White-headed Palace Girl Talking About That Year”…
Friends who know Vista may know that I used to be in the Internet industry and media, and now I am wandering around the world as a professional lecturer, columnist and consultant. Some people’s impression of me is still that of the media editor-in-chief, so I will update you on the current situation at the beginning.
Someone asked me what I have been busy with lately? In addition to running the “I love writing notes” community and preparing [Podcast programs] (https://www.facebook.com/www .vlab.marketing) and writing columns for newspapers (https://udn.com/search/word/2/%E9%84%AD%E7%B7%AF%E7%AD%8C), I mainly give lectures in the public sector, enterprises and universities!
Someone asked me if lecturing is fun. It’s really hard to explain! Talking about my experience in teaching at universities in recent years, I feel that the current teacher-student relationship is a bit delicate. For example, the classroom is occasionally filled with the strange smell of various foods brought by students, and sometimes some students even turn on their mobile phones to live broadcast. The teacher seems to be used to it and is not surprised.
I remember one time I was invited to give a lecture at a certain university. While all the classmates were scrolling on their mobile phones or secretly playing computer games, I unexpectedly saw a man sitting in the corner copying notes intently. At that time, I thought, “Great, finally a student is willing to listen to the class and take notes!” I was about to praise this classmate, but the teaching assistant beside me reminded me that the person was not a student, but a new assistant professor who had just returned from studying in the United States.
Oops, times have really changed. Now it’s the teachers who pay more attention to the class than the students? Look, do we old guys have to shed a few tears of the times?
Another time, I was giving a lecture in the Department of Communication of a prestigious university in China, and I found that the female classmate was either scrolling on her mobile phone or playing with the hair of the classmate in front of me. There was another girl who came late after ten minutes. She walked into the classroom with a “float” and a talisman on her forehead. Oh, it turns out it’s Halloween! After class, the students dispersed in a hurry, and the female student who posted the charm deliberately walked to the podium to find the teacher. I thought to myself, does this student want to ask a question? I didn’t expect that the teacher would be asked to take a photo and be a ghost together!
Speaking of interesting interactions with college students, Happy Cloud also mentioned her teaching experience more than ten years ago. Once, a classmate actually brought in the fragrant pork noodles, and she had to remind the classmate with an embarrassed look to sit in the corner, so as not to affect the mood of other students in class.
Closer to home, let me share with you the original intention of organizing the “RE Meetup Internet People Gathering” event. I remember that many of my friends had read the article “[The bloggers we followed in those years - Compilation of the current situation of Taiwan’s top 100 blogs in 2008] (https://blog.darkthread.net/blog/2008-tw-top-100-bloggers/)”, which also made many people fall into the tunnel of time.
Just like the scene mentioned in Li Weijing’s “Old School Dating” (https://okapi.books.com.tw/article/1537), you have to use MSN to date someone, and you have to pretend to refuse for the first time… Many people see that nostalgic article talking about the Web 2.0 era, and they can’t help but think of “Blog Observation” where are the top 100 bloggers from that year?
Wanwan is already a mother, are you still painting now? And where did Lady Nana go? Is everything okay? To be honest, Mr. 6 and I had the idea of holding a party before this article was published. It was not entirely because of the article that we wanted to get together with everyone. If you really want to say it, that article only plays the role of catalyst.
Many people know [Mr.6’s whereabouts](http://Mr.6’s whereabouts) because they recently watched Brother Chang’s live broadcast. In fact, we have kept in touch over the past few years, and we chat with him online when we have time; of course, we also meet other old friends on Facebook or Twitter. Therefore, it is actually normal to meet everyone to drink coffee and chat!
Having said that, since we are going to hold an old-school date (no, a party), it seems that the location should not be chosen at McDonald’s or Louisa, where young people like to gather nowadays. Thinking of [Epbooks Bookstore] (https://epbooks.com.tw/), which has held reading clubs before, it seems very suitable. The location of this venue is great, and it also has a bookish atmosphere that literary youths love!
Take me out, ask me out the old-school way, and after I reject you twice, I’ll nod the third time. Don’t knock me on MSN, don’t leave messages on Facebook, and don’t use What’s App to ask me if I’m free later. We are going for a walk, a long, long way. It was only on walks that we really talked, old-school talk. ——“The necessity of old-school dating”
To be honest, this party was held in a bit of a hurry, and I am inevitably a little sorry to my friends! However, after all, this was a temporary idea between the two of us, and there was no support or support from companies or organizations behind it, so we had to keep everything simple. Having said that, if this is an annual blogger conference, of course you can take a long-term approach. But since it’s just a chance to meet each other, I hope the old friends who come here can have some sparks and even do something interesting together!
Our idea was very simple and not very complicated, and everyone was very happy to see us. Well, this is the idea of our gathering, so I named this gathering event “RE Meetup”, with the thought of reliving the feelings of the Internet. It’s really interesting to think about my luck when I started blogging more than ten years ago, starting from setting up my own website, or being responsible for Yam Blog’s many blogs. There were still MSN and ICQ at that time!
After talking about the idea of hosting this party, I handed the microphone to everyone and asked all the guests to take turns to briefly introduce themselves.
The first friend to speak is [Qin Zhenjia] (https://www.facebook.com/guruchin), known as “White Bear”. He is also a senior media person, but he considers himself an observer and instigator rather than a front-line participant. In fact, he has rich media experience. He has worked in the advertising and public relations industries including Ogilvy and other well-known companies, and has also been the editor-in-chief of “[Innovation Discovery Magazine] (https://www.facebook.com/ideasmg/)”.
After Bai Xiong left his 9-to-6 job, he began to work as a freelance translator and writer in the high-tech industry, representing clients such as Red Hat or Amazon’s AWS. In the past few years, I also ran the “Content Hacker” website with me and invested in the promotion of “Content Marketing” (/blog/what-is-content-marketing-this-is). Bai Xiong, who comes from a background in finance and taxation, likes to read a variety of books. When he has free time, he also participates in some social activities such as Reading Club.
[Tong Shangwei] (https://www.facebook.com/tung.s.wei), who came from Taichung to attend the conference, is a search engine optimization (SEO) expert and a lecturer in the field of online marketing. In addition to teaching at the Cultural University Promotion Department, Tiandi Human Cultural Creation and other institutions, he also serves as a marketing consultant for certain companies, such as a major medical equipment company in central China and the GOGOSHOP online store platform, all of which are his clients.
Talking about the nostalgic Web 2.0 era, Tong Shangwei mentioned that he was still studying at National Chiao Tung University and was a network administrator in the Department of Asset Management during his freshman year. It was also at that time that he came into contact with blogging platforms such as WordPress and Movable Type. He shared an interesting incident. Although he did not become a formal blogger at that time, it was amazing that he started a blog with only four articles when he first came out of the society. However, he was interviewed by the Industrial and Business Times because he was ranked among the top in search engines as a “keyword ranking expert”.
Tong Shangwei recalled that he was only 25 or 26 years old at the time, and it was his first time to appear in a newspaper, which proved the power of blogging. Now due to the COVID-19 epidemic, many companies’ businesses have been affected, and I don’t know what can be done? In fact, at this time, the industry needs the help of SEO experts, and this happens to be his area of expertise.

The next person to speak was [Cloudhappy] (https://www.facebook.com/cloudhappy). She started blogging in 2003 and worked for Dentsu and American advertising companies at that time. Because I had worked in an advertising company before, I knew I wanted to run a [personal brand] (https://www.vistacheng.com/2020/04/why-personal-branding-matters.html) on the first day I opened my blog. It was called “Happy Cloud” from the beginning, but because of this reason, many people still don’t know its real name.
Happy Cloud likes to travel. While working in an advertising company, he published his previous travel records to the Tomorrow Daily News Channel. For her, blogging was more of a hobby at that time. She never expected that this thing would be commercialized more than ten years later, and the rapid changes in the industry are also dizzying!
Happy Cloud believes that it is a good thing to stick to the original intention of writing, because as long as you manage your blog well, many opportunities will automatically come to you! Wherever there is exposure in newspapers, news, and television, there is even a radio program that can be done now. She doesn’t want to make her blog too commercial, but more like using her blog to record her life. She made an interesting analogy. She was very happy that she was just “sitting around” every day. As long as she played in a planned way, she would receive cooperation invitations from units such as the tourism bureau from time to time, which gave her the opportunity to go out with foreign bloggers.
She mentioned that she once visited a foreign country and met a blogger from India in Thailand. The other person asked her how many years she had been writing? Happy Cloud said it was fourteen years old, and Indian bloggers were surprised. After the return, several bloggers immediately formed a group, saying “we can share cases with each other in the future.” This commercial atmosphere shocked Happy Cloud and thought, “Well, aren’t we here to have fun?”
On the contrary, recently due to the epidemic, international travel has become more popular, which also makes her feel that she can take this opportunity to get to know the treasure island of Taiwan and explore some development possibilities. Otherwise, it is not an option to waste more than ten years of time and sit on nothing. Therefore, Happy Cloud has recently begun to pay attention to the possibility of monetization, putting more thought and time on investment and financial management… Of course, she who loves traveling will not forget her roots, and will still find time to travel and write.
Happy Cloud pointed out that she is very happy now that she and her husband can live happily every day. Although I haven’t found the answer to the meaning of life yet, I hope that I can maintain my original intention and do what I like, that’s enough!
Dear John, who also has an indissoluble bond with tourism, has been successful in starting a business in recent years. But maybe because he is busy running his business, he joked that his blog has been “growing up” for a long time! Therefore, in addition to doing live video broadcasts recently, one day I saw [Zen’s blog] (https://zen1976.com/) which was so amazing that he thought, “Oh my God! How can I become so beautiful!”, which prompted him to think of the blog again, and asked the company’s art editor to help him redesign and decorate his blog.
After getting Zen’s approval, he adopted the exact same blog layout. Although it contained articles from long ago, he had recently resumed writing. Of course, I believe some old friends may still remember that Dear John once held the “Global Chinese Blog Awards” when he was working at Zhongshi Group, and at that time he also hired Foreman Jian to be the host.
Ten years ago, Dear John founded a digital marketing company called Greatidea. He laughed and said that there are currently dozens of employees in the company (about 20 to 30 full-time editors, receiving full-time labor and health insurance, all working from home), and he once wrote a book called “There is no one in our office!” The great liberation of management, how free work teams can create higher performance](https://www.books.com.tw/products/0010661150)》.
In recent years, he has been paying attention to LINE marketing. He is currently researching a new tool and trying to introduce an “office clock-in system” within the company so that employees can clock in through LINE.
Next, it’s the long-awaited Dolphin Flying’s turn to appear. She started blogging in 2004 and has not stopped until now. Surprisingly, she has retired. She usually teaches calligraphy and music in a well-known primary school. She laughed and said that she had never clocked in and had always been a pure individual worker. I just came back from a trip to Taitung this month, which is really enviable!
As long as you connect to Dolphin Fei’s Blog, you can see some calligraphy, travel notes or reading experience content. She said that only if it has some record value will it be written in the blog. Dolphin Fei not only writes blogs, she also started playing “Time Map” very early (Note: Dolphin Fei: Some people write diaries with words, some use pictures to write diaries, some use music to write diaries, and some use life to write diaries. Starting from 2010, we will play an interesting and rich daily photo shoot, using photos to write diaries, called “Time Map”).
In recent years, Dolphin Fei has been living in seclusion. Although he usually pays attention to his friends’ messages, he mostly just likes them on the Internet. Dolphin Fei still seems to be full of energy. She said that she is very happy to have the opportunity to attend the “RE Meetup Internet People Gathering” this time. She is really happy to see her old friends!
Smile, who appeared next, is the youngest partner in this event. She learned about this party from Brother Chang’s live broadcast, and she signed up to attend the event just in time. She used to work in business marketing, and now she runs her own Instagram, and occasionally takes on a few text-related cases.
When talking about blogging, she said that she had been reading “Unknown Stations” since she was in junior high school (people lamented…) and would write and share her experiences. That’s when she started to enjoy reading. But when I was in college, I was playing in clubs and listening to lectures, so I didn’t keep blogging. It was all intermittently.
At that time, writing was just a hobby. It wasn’t until last year that I entered a low point in my life. It wasn’t until this year that I got back on my feet through writing and wanted to start doing something I like and am good at. I had no self-confidence before, only writing was something I was confident about. On the one hand, I relied on writing to repair myself, and on the other hand, I regarded it as an “output” channel (I used to listen to many lectures and input a lot of things). Therefore, starting from the end of January, I have been very disciplined in writing two articles a week until now. In terms of Instagram management, I write three articles a week, and I have been writing articles for almost a year now.
She will plan to publish a few articles a week and set a publishing time (such as 7:30 a.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays), which is also a way to push herself. Since we have made a public commitment, we will definitely achieve it! The white bear sitting opposite her also laughed and said, “This is a positive cycle, very good! Yeah!”
Jian, the foreman sitting next to him, also thinks that operating self-media in this way is very good! Smile said that as he wrote this, it was almost one year already. I have recently started learning how to build a WordPress website, and I am very happy to have the opportunity to attend gatherings and meet seniors who like writing.
After listening to Smile’s sharing, it was finally the turn of senior Internet person [Foreman Ken] (https://www.facebook.com/kenworker) to speak. He laughed and said, “I have been thinking about it just now, which paragraph should I start from?”
He mentioned that he met friends at different stages today, so he decided to talk about one thing first. That is, from before to now, although many people associate him with blogs, for so many years, what I have been thinking about is “online entrepreneurship”. We have known Vista since 1997 and 1998, and the two have also worked together in the Internet industry. At that time, I had the idea of starting an online business. I would always look at what was available abroad and constantly think about whether there was a suitable entrepreneurial model?
In 1999, the prototype of blog appeared in the United States! Foreman Jian went back and checked the records and found that he had applied for a blog account a long time ago! Then there was a personal news station, where I published some articles, and then there was the “Fifth Grade Discipline Office”. When a group of friends with similar ideas and backgrounds get together online, it is naturally very exciting and happy!
Foreman Jian said that he couldn’t help but sigh when he heard Happy Cloud introduced his name. Many people once asked him what “Foreman Jian” means? Come to think of it, this name has nothing to do with tourism. At that time, it was called Foreman Jian because of “Internet Workers Front” (Vista added, there is also “Jidong Denzhi”). This name is actually related to the Internet, but has nothing to do with tourism.
Unexpectedly, after entering the tourism industry, he was constantly asked about the origin of the name and what it meant? Sometimes when he gets tired of being asked, Foreman Jian will want to ask, “Well, why don’t you ask Jiu Dao? Why is he called Jiu Dao?” Well, to put it bluntly, it’s a pen name.
Talking about the history of the news station, Foreman Kin actually had the opportunity to participate in the operation of Tomorrow Daily in 2000, but unfortunately the Internet bubble suddenly burst at that time, and the entire industry was deeply impacted, so he went to develop the tourism industry. It cannot be denied that the tourism industry was about to take off at that time, and there were bright prospects.
He did not forget about writing and continued to operate the blog until around 2003 and 2004. I still remember using Movable Type to set up the website. Then I met Jeff and Amy, and everyone got together and set up “Melancholy Circus”. Jeff, who loves music, was the driving force behind the scenes and the real hero of the establishment.
When the time series entered 2005, Sina, Wuming Xiaozhan, etc. were in full swing. At that time, Foreman Jian was already working in a travel agency. At that time, he also suggested that the company use blogs for marketing (White Bear added: At that time, he was working at Ogilvy and Mather, and Foreman Jian was so famous that even Intel asked him to write an article).
Looking back on these things, Foreman Jian feels a little regretful that he brought his blog into the tourism industry but did not “commercialize” his blog in the process. Xizhong’s emotions were quite complicated. In part, he was the same as Happy Cloud. At that time, he believed that blogs were personal records. He never deliberately wanted to create a personal brand. Instead, he wanted to be a “platform” too much. Later, when I worked for a travel group, I also wanted to help create an online platform that was convenient for customers to use. Until he left in 2005, the people who are now starting a business together are all familiar friends from the blogging days, such as Zheng Gui, Slime and others… In fact, it was at that time that the same group of members came to the other side for the first time in 2005 and 2006 to attend the Chinese Blog Annual Conference. At that time, someone in the tourism industry asked: “If you want to be a travel media or travel agency, why don’t you look for people in the tourism industry instead of Internet people?” Foreman Jian replied, because he is already familiar with the tourism industry, but he needs some partners who can better understand his ideas and stay at the forefront of technology to know what is the most popular? Many of my partners were just writing nerds back then, but now they are all excellent and powerful operators.

Mr. 6, who has been busy recording, can finally express his thoughts at this moment. He pointed out that he was very moved after reading Foreman Jian’s sharing, because every time the era changes, we will be shaped into something different, and how insignificant we are, we are just pawns of the era.
He joked that if he had entered the Internet industry two years later or two years earlier, he might have done something different. For example, Foreman Jian met Vista in 1997, when he was still in his junior year of college. At that time, he would go to Sina to read news. Netscape browsers overseas could not read Chinese. When I read it in school, I could only read it on Sina, because it turns the text into images.
Mr.6 did not participate in the stage of the Tomorrow Daily News Channel. Although it is a pity, he also believes that every era has different actions. So, when I came back to Taiwan, I wanted to start a business, but Taiwan was still in the dot-com bubble stage. Although I wanted to start a business, there were no VCs to invest in, so I applied for a VC job.
Looking back now, at that time, there were only 800 or 900 people in Taiwan’s venture capital industry. However, the venture capital circle at that time did not understand the Internet, and indeed there were no IPOs or exit cases on the Internet. Therefore, Mr. 6 joined venture capital as a basic AO without any financial background. The boss said: “Then you should look at the Internet and look at targets like Xingqi Technology.” Oh my, it would have been terrible if I invested at that time!
Mr.6 Looking back on those days, it seemed that a love apartment could be invested with US$500,000, but there were no venture capital investment websites at that time. His brother asked him to start a blog to keep up with Techcrunch. This American technology blog was all-powerful at the time, making a lot of money with just six square ads. money.
Later, when we encountered the second economic downturn (the Lehman Brothers subprime mortgage crisis), we had no choice but to take on the case because we couldn’t raise money. At first I wanted to sell blogging services to companies such as Condé Nast and help them open blogs, but later I didn’t even want to write for them for free! Half a year later, there was a turmoil in social media. They said they would help companies open Facebook fan groups, and every company came to submit cases! So, Mr. 6 opened a social marketing company, just like Dear John (note: he sold the company after ten years of operation and now starts another business).
Mr. 6 laughed and said that he and Dear John are colleagues. (Dear John also smiled and responded that there are many colleagues here today. For example, although Foreman Jian is not a colleague, the parent company is a colleague. Sometimes when bidding for a project, the three companies will see each other’s representatives).
Mr.6 brought back the topic and said with a smile that the reason why he and Vista held this party was mainly to help everyone type and record beautiful memories. In fact, the gathering itself has no special purpose. We just want to see each other and see how we have experienced an era together. In addition to seeing what is the latest we can exchange and do together, we are a group of experienced people who jointly understand that “the times are actually very cruel.”
Foreman Jian also agrees with this view: “I think it is a very good story and can give everyone a lot of inspiration.” Of course, this is not just a temporary glory, but a story of ups and downs in the past ten years.
Foreman Jian also said: “If I have to say one thing, the thing I regret most is that I didn’t start “selling things” from Day 1. If I started from Day 1, maybe the subsequent development will be very different.” In the past, Foreman Jian was doing things to help the company promote the schedule, rather than selling things himself. I thought that the company would give me a salary and my life would be comfortable, so I didn’t think too much about it. The products that can be sold are not only promotional itineraries, but also computers, etc… Of course, everyone’s life situation is different, and it is very enviable to see brother 486’s current development!
Speaking of the business model, Dolphin Fei also shared her own fundraising experience: “Once I wanted to travel to Japan for 30 days, but I just didn’t have enough money, so I raised funds online and sold 30 handwritten Heart Sutras. Unexpectedly, I sold more than 50 pieces, which is equivalent to raising twice the travel expenses for the trip!”
Talking about the opportunities for business development, Foreman Jian said with a smile: “Although I am now in my fifties, I have ‘figured it out’ now.”
I was also very impressed by what Foreman Jian said. Except for the young Smile, almost all the attendees at this event are of the same generation as Foreman Jian. We have experienced the rise and fall of the Internet industry. But it’s interesting. Is it because our group of bloggers are more “old-fashioned” and others will immediately turn into business when they see a business opportunity, but we will only… Oh, okay, let’s write an article!
Fortunately, it’s not too late to start working hard now.
Foreman Jian pointed out: “Affected by the epidemic, the tourism industry has undoubtedly been the biggest impact. After a few months, I think this is a good opportunity. If it were not for the epidemic, I believe we would not have the opportunity to sit together today. It seems that the epidemic may drag on for another year. At this time at the end of 2020, it is the right time. Let us think about what can be done in time. At least one year can be used for planning.”
I agree with this view. I have never captured the “businessman’s thinking” before. I think of a book “Millionaire Fast Lane” which once mentioned that parents in the past would encourage their children to study hard in college so that they can find a stable job in the future. This is the “slow lane” thinking. Although there is no right or wrong, successful businessmen may not think this way!
Smile, who was listening to his elder brother and elder sister talk about ancient times, suddenly mentioned: “Recently I have been reading books about profiting from personal brands. There is an author named [Lee Rock] (https://www.facebook.com/novels.rock) who started out as a fish killer in a food factory. His life experiences are very interesting, and he seems to have a lot of stories!”
In fact, everyone has many stories (just like most people think that Vista is from the media, but they don’t know that I worked in the electronics industry and was a boss’s special assistant), and organizing such a gathering is to give everyone the opportunity to share beautiful memories and experiences at different stages of life.
Bai Xiong also continued to speak: “I had an original idea. It happened that my son was in his first year of college recently, and many relatives and friends asked him how to communicate with his son. I attended parent-teacher conferences from his son’s elementary school to high school, and followed him all the way. Later, he helped his son’s high school to make a parent-teacher conference journal. In one episode, it was all presented in a cartoon style, that is, using photos to make comics. It was shocking and the entire high school association found it interesting.”
Next, Bai Xiong used the projector to show the exquisite cartoon parent conference magazine he had produced for Nanhu High School, which caused a burst of exclamation from the guests present.
Once the chat box is opened, time flies very fast. It was close to noon when I reluctantly came to a conclusion.
This time the “RE Meetup Internet People Gathering” is the first try, and it seems that everyone’s response is pretty good! The next “RE Meetup Internet People Party” is expected to be held in the morning of [January 8, 2021] (https://www.vistacheng.com/2021/01/re-meetup.html). A special guest has also been invited to share the theme, which is exciting to look forward to.
