Don’t ask what ChatGPT can do for you, ask what you want it to do for you

Some friends may know that I have successively given lectures on AI writing and marketing at TeSA and City State Group. In addition to the job issue that everyone is concerned about, many friends are also curious about “what ChatGPT can do.” So, let me talk to you today!

The prerequisite for using ChatGPT correctly, in a nutshell, is actually the following paragraph:

Don’t ask what ChatGPT can do for you, ask what do you wish it could do for you?

I have seen a Forbes article before, talking about what can we use ChatGPT? The aspects mentioned by this author are quite good and you can also refer to them. Like: generating ideas and brainstorming.

  1. Get personalized advice.
  2. Understand complex information.
  3. Ask ChatGPT to be your writing assistant.
  4. Summarize the key points of the book, reports and research.
  5. Get debugging suggestions for programming.
  6. Translate foreign language content.
  7. Help with exam questions and create multiple-choice questions.
  8. Get assistance with travel advice.
  9. Analyze the mood and tone of a certain novel or article.
  10. Search for various information.
  11. Lay the foundation for training ChatGPT on your own database.
  12. Provide job search and interview assistance.
  13. Make up a song or write a poem about you.

Questioning is a science

Now that we all know that ChatGPT is an AI chatbot, so how to talk to it is very important! I have mentioned in many lectures that in the past, many friends were accustomed to using keyword thinking to search for information. In fact, as long as the keywords entered do not deviate too much, most of them will get it wrong! However, we have now entered the AI era. When we need to talk to an AI chatbot, just entering keywords may not be enough. We naturally need to provide more problem context and reference information.

In other words, “Question” itself is a knowledge. We all know that communication and expression are important. If there was no need for this in the past, we might not pay much attention to how to ask questions accurately. But when we enter the AI era, it is very important to learn how to ask questions, communicate and express accurately!

It is true that search engines have grown up with you and me, and most of us have transitioned from the era of search, but you must realize: this era is no longer the same! In the future, we will inevitably have to deal with various AI chatbots, so when a question arises in your mind, the first thing you may do is no longer enter keywords, but think first!

Having said that, if you want to get the answer effortlessly and effectively, then we need to think carefully, even “begin with the end in mind”, and in turn think about what kind of clues and answers we want to get?

In other words, we cannot think like we did in the past that just by entering a few keywords we will get the correct answer! If you do this, although ChatGPT will indeed respond to you, its response may be relatively simple and casual, and it may even be randomly looking for or piecing together information from the corpus.

What’s interesting is that you clearly know that ChatGPT is not a real person, but in order to get answers quickly, you have to think about how to talk to it, or enter some spells… Well, this is a very interesting thing.

Of course, I have to say that the world is still in the exploratory and learning stage. To be honest, we ourselves are not the official representatives of OpenAI. Therefore, I would also like to suggest that you can refer to the information on the Internet, but you should not completely believe it, but must check and think about it from multiple sources.

For example, there are many bloggers or YouTubers on the Internet talking about information about Google search or Facebook algorithms, but if you think about it carefully, most netizens are not employees of the above two companies, so how do they know the real details of these algorithms? Therefore, the accuracy of some information in the market is actually open to question. Many of them are based on people’s own exploration, speculation or repeated testing… So, although we can refer to this information, I encourage everyone to try it more and accumulate their own experience and insights.

As for how to ask questions to the AI chatbot, I will write more articles to talk about it in the future. Here, I will first share with you some general directions!

Conceive a framework for asking questions

Some people say that ChatGPT is an answer engine, not a search engine. Therefore, you can conceive a framework for asking questions, which is simply divided into three stages:

  1. First use the question method to help ChatGPT explore and understand the meaning of the question itself.
  2. Then, clarify [the context of the problem] from the dialogue with it (https://ithome.com.tw/node/70237).
  3. Finally, give a framework to focus on the problem and find the answers you need.

If you have tried following this process, you should find that the questioning process is interesting and step-by-step. And it’s not the same as the search mode in the past! For example, in the past, if you wanted to search for the best department store in Xinyi District, Taipei City, you might enter “Xinyi District, Department Store, Recommendation”, and a lot of information would come out immediately… However, if you want to deal with ChatGPT now, I would suggest that you first think about the answer you want to get, and then limit the scope, so that it has a structure to focus on slowly…

I also mentioned before that if you want to formulate a question mantra, you can also start with the following steps:

  1. Determine the purpose of the spell: Think clearly about the purpose of the question you want to ask, what problem is it to solve, or what task is it to help the user complete?
  2. Collect and analyze data: Collect relevant data and analyze the data to discover questions that users may ask, as well as the needs and purposes behind their questions.
  3. Design the structure and content of the spell: The structure and content of the spell can be designed based on the purpose and the results of data analysis to ensure that they can guide the user to complete the target task or solve the problem.
  4. Testing and optimization mantra: After multiple tests and iterations, and collecting feedback from AI tools and customers, optimization and improvements are made accordingly.

Making good use of the 5W1H analysis method (also known as the “Six He Method”) is also a good method. Everyone is welcome to try it!
