If you often participate in some book clubs, or have attended private learning courses, you may have seen lecturers or hosts using an App called UMU to interact at the event.
What is UMU? Simply put, UMU is an easy-to-use interactive learning platform. In this era of knowledge sharing, everyone’s knowledge and experience can be extracted and refined and shared with others. Using the rich interactive and action learning methods provided by UMU, people can initiate surveys and ask questions on-site. Not only is it easy to share, but they can also participate in micro-lectures and live broadcasts remotely to promote mutual communication and interaction.
——What’s even better is that the results of interactive participation can be presented to all participants instantly. UMU invites people around you to join in through various forms, connects people and knowledge, accelerates the flow of knowledge, and allows everyone to integrate, share and gain.
Speaking of the origin of UMU, we must mention Li Dongshuo, a young entrepreneur who once worked at Google. The reason why he had the idea to found UMU must be traced back to 2013; at that time, Li Dongshuo, who was still serving as the director of the business cooperation department at Google, happened to have an opportunity to go to the United States to attend the [ATD Conference] (http://www.atdconference.org/) and [Google I/O Annual Conference] (https://events.google.com/io/). He is full of longing for this opportunity and looks forward to communicating with many industry leaders from around the world.
Faced with these two international events, which were attended by more than 10,000 industry experts, Li Dongshuo was very happy to have the opportunity to attend them. However, he soon discovered that the problem with such large-scale events was that there was a clear lack of communication in the event. In other words, there is a huge gap between speakers and conference participants. Although everyone is in the same conference center and communicates in the same professional language, it is not possible to effectively allow each other to participate in dialogue and communication.
Everyone’s sharing will inspire others and there will be more opportunities to learn from peers.
Then, Li Dongshuo thought of the smartphones that were just emerging at that time, and felt that he could use the power of mobile networks to give everyone the opportunity to take the initiative and share their own opinions with the outside world. Therefore, he seized this opportunity and determined to use his training experience and information science background in the past eleven years to design an App prototype that facilitates interaction and communication, and this is the origin of UMU.
After seeing the demonstration of the prototype of the product, a group of professionals around him expressed enthusiastic support and encouragement, which prompted Li Dongshuo to leave Google and embark on the journey of entrepreneurship. He began to organize a team in 2014 and officially invested in the development of UMU. However, in just three years, 50 companies among the top 500 companies in the world are currently using UMU. In addition, you can also see this App in more than 180 countries around the world, which can be said to have achieved remarkable results.

In this way, the mobile network can be upgraded into an interactive classroom that combines online and offline, allowing everyone to integrate, share and gain.
The members of the UMU Technology team responsible for building UMU’s core technologies and products mainly come from well-known Internet companies such as Google, Baidu, 360, Sohu and JD.com. The founder Li Dongshuo also comes from a well-known family and has served at Google for seven years.
Li Dongshuo pointed out that Youmu Technology currently has offices in Beijing, China and Silicon Valley, USA. Among the 45 employees, half are responsible for product development, while another ten are responsible for operations and ten are responsible for customer service. In the second half of this year, it is expected to expand the size of the Silicon Valley office and accelerate UMU’s global layout.
At present, more than 200,000 lecturers around the world have adopted UMU, which has also allowed UMU to successfully enter the education and training market. Li Dongshuo believes that blended learning is the trend of the future and everyone should be given the opportunity to participate in discussions and exchanges. Therefore, Youmu Technology will combine the concept of blended learning and focus on the development of self-operated copyrighted content.
Youmu Technology hopes to integrate educational resources from around the world to help teachers, speakers and the general audience improve their teaching effects and experience. Looking back on past development, Youmu Technology released the Chinese version in April 2015, followed by the global version in May.
Li Dongshuo is also very optimistic about the development of the Taiwan market, so he chose to cooperate with [Taiyi International Consulting Group] (http://www.timingasia.com/).
Open UMU and through the beautifully designed operating interface, in addition to quickly conducting interactive sessions such as check-in, leaving messages and questionnaires, the lecturer can also create a micro-lecture of up to five minutes in length through simple guidance (audio, video, text and other content can be integrated).
Li Dongshuo said: “Under the premise that users’ time is becoming more and more fragmented, micro-courses will become a new carrier of content. We use the length of the segments to correspond to the learning time of the segments, which can significantly lower the threshold for content production and experience sharing, and is also in line with the principle of people’s minimum actions.”
In the future, Youmu Technology plans to extend the length of each micro class to fifteen minutes, making the presentation of course content more diverse. Of course, this decision is naturally in line with the current main trend of international learning.
UMU connects people and knowledge, accelerates the flow of knowledge, makes blended learning and social learning standard, and leads the comprehensive upgrade of learning to the community era.
In the face of today’s various payment-for-knowledge platforms rushing to seize the market, and even the phenomenon of “bad money driving out good money” has begun to occur, Li Dongshuo said earnestly, “Teaching is a means, and learning is the purpose. Only by helping learners achieve success and can be transformed into specific behaviors or results, will all this be meaningful.”
Through the assistance of UMU, lecturers can quickly grasp the dynamics of students, and can also help learners achieve the goals of lean learning and reduce unnecessary consumption of time and energy. It can be said to kill two birds with one stone.
In the past, in organizations with more than 150 people, knowledge transmission was prone to gaps. Fortunately, the emergence of mobile networks has broken down this communication barrier. Not only will UMU continue to act as the driving force behind the scenes, it will also plan to build a public version of the platform and begin to enter the course market. In the future, it will also help outstanding lecturers and creators sell excellent teaching content and promote the upgrading of the mobile learning industry.
CEO Li said: “Only by creating value can we transcend everything.” He and his entrepreneurial team created the UMU app not to chase the mobile learning craze, but to truly understand the needs of the times. He also sincerely hopes that through the help of UMU, people from all over the world can find the joy and value of learning!
