Whether you are a student or an office worker, when it comes to taking notes. Everyone should be familiar with it, right? Although taking notes sounds simple, there is actually a lot of knowledge involved. Just from the fact that there are hundreds of note-taking books in the market, you can know how much the public needs for note-taking!

Common ways to take notes

Imagine if you had the opportunity to attend a lecture or conference, what would you do take notes? Observing everyone’s practices, I think there are no more than the following five methods, namely: recording first and then speaking, recording verbatim, drawing a mind map, listing key points, and identifying keywords and then adding explanations. Of course, some people will extend relevant ideas, work experience or other ideas and inspirations, and then organize them into notes.

In “[McKinsey uses these 8 tricks to achieve super-efficient productivity]” (https://www.books.com.tw/exep/assp.php/vista/products/0010786540?utm_source=vist a&utm_medium=ap-books&utm_content=recommend&utm_campaign=ap-202105)”, the author Taiyo Iga also mentioned that before compiling information, you must first have the concept of output in your mind. In the case of McKinsey Consulting, they will design blank forms to collect information, and this approach coincides with my own note-taking habit.

Inspiration from the business model blueprint

I used to be a business executive, and I have seen many friends work hard to write notes, but then quickly shelved the information. Afterwards, I often didn’t know what key points I had remembered. Well, how do you take notes so that you can “see the forest for the trees” quickly and efficiently? I suggest that you follow the practice of [Business Model Canvas] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Business_Model_Canvas) and use the nine-square grid chart to write your own efficient notes.

The so-called business model blueprint comes from the book “[The Profit Generation: Do It Yourself, Draw Your Business Model]” by Osterwalder and Pigneur et al. (https://www.books.com.tw/exep/assp.php/vista/prod ucts/0010567254?utm_source=vista&utm_medium=ap-books&utm_content=recommend&utm_campaign=ap-202105)》(Business Model Generation). Authors such as Osterwalder proposed the concept of business model blueprint, which organizes the complete structure of the business model through nine interrelated elements such as value proposition, target audience, channels, customer relationships, key resources, key activities, key partners, revenue streams and cost structure.

To put it simply, this business model blueprint is presented as a nine-square grid. The three elements on the left represent the orientation of the enterprise, including: key partners, key activities and key resources. The three elements on the right represent the customer’s orientation, including: target customer segment, customer relationship, and access. In the middle of the nine-square grid is the most important value proposition, which is also the link between the company and its customers. The elements on the lower left of the nine-square grid represent the cost structure incurred by the company, while the revenue stream on the lower right represents the revenue generated by customers.

We can refer to the structure of the business model blueprint and design a Jiugongge chart suitable for efficient note-taking! Take attending a lecture, forum, or conference as an example. The middle grid can be used to write down the theme of the event. The three elements on the left focus on the focus, inspiration, and relevant information of the event. The three elements on the right present the time and place related to the event itself, the viewpoints discussed, and the attendees of the meeting. The two boxes below can be filled in with action policies and core values respectively.

Practical drill of Jiugongge note-taking method

For example, I recently attended an entrepreneurial lecture titled “[Digital Thinking to Drive Steady Sales Growth] (https://www.contenthacker.today/2018/05/gekihana-and-yiyuflorist.html)” given by two Chinese and Japanese online flower shop operators. He runs an online flower shop “GEKIHANA” in Rakuten Market, Japan, and is also the author of the best-selling book “[Digital power is money-making power]” (https://www.books.com.tw/exep/assp.php/vista/products/0010773880?utm_source=vi sta&utm_medium=ap-books&utm_content=recommend&utm_campaign=ap-202105)” author Satoru Furuya, and the local co-founder of “A Flower in a Corner” Zhang Baiwei, these two entrepreneurs work together to share their experience in entrepreneurship and operation.

If you follow the way ordinary people take notes, you may need to record first and then record the content of the two speakers verbatim, but this may not only take a lot of time, but is also not in line with the principle of efficiency. Therefore, I filled in the necessary information on the pre-planned blank nine-square grid form, as shown below:

#Theme content: Entrepreneurship of style flower shop──Digital thinking that drives steady sales growth #Time and place: May 27, 2018 from 2 to 5 pm, Xunyin Anemos Cafe.

Audience audience: aspiring entrepreneurs and office workers.

#Viewpoint: Mr. Satoru Furuya shared online marketing techniques and accounting concepts that entrepreneurs must know. Zhang Baiwei shared how to apply the subscription service system to online flower shops. #INSPIRED: Small profits (marginal contribution) are more important than revenue figures! #Activity focus: Two online flower shop operators share their entrepreneurial ideas, business strategies and business models. #Related information: “GEKIHANA” official website, “There are flowers in a corner” official website #Action policy: Pay attention to digital thinking, create unique products as soon as possible, and then establish barriers and thresholds. #CoreValue: Pay attention to service experience and create high value-added products. By filling out this note-taking nine-square grid form, we can quickly capture the core values and related key points of this lecture, and we can also have a bird’s-eye view and examine the characteristics of the entire event from a higher level and perspective. The usefulness of this form does not stop there. Based on this form, you can write another article that records the characteristics of the event!

By the way, I would also like to remind everyone that when taking notes, don’t just write down the key points described by the speaker or teacher verbatim, but also think about the inspiration you brought to yourself after listening to the lecture, and the key points that you can act on immediately!

You are welcome to try it too! If you are not sure, you are welcome to come to the “I love writing notes” community to discuss it with everyone!
