When I saw this book, I couldn’t help but think of “Let the Bullets Fly”, a Chinese movie that was released in 2010. This film directed by Jiang Wen uses black humor to interpret the politics, society and lifestyle of the other side of the Taiwan Strait, and has made great gains at the box office.
The book “Let the Elephant Fly” is written by the entrepreneurial godfather of Silicon Valley Steven. Hoffman is a guide for entrepreneurs in the world. Graduated from the University of Southern California [Steven. Steven S. Hoffman] (https://meet.bnext.com.tw/articles/view/39613) (Steven S. Hoffman) is not only a heavyweight entrepreneurial godfather, angel investor and speaker in Silicon Valley, but also the founder of the premier entrepreneurial incubator - [Founders Space] (https://www.foundersspace.com/).
Unlike other entrepreneurship books that only talk about entrepreneurship theory, the author of this book, known as “Captain Hoffman”, focuses more on helping entrepreneurs understand the entrepreneurial spirit and methods of innovation. What’s even more valuable is that he uses an easy-to-understand introduction method and combines his actual operating experience in Founders Space to explain the unique entrepreneurial philosophy of Silicon Valley in the United States.
For example, many people may think that advanced information technology is a necessary element for starting a business, but the author refutes this stereotype. He believes that the vast majority of new startups that are changing the world do not rely on technological innovation, but focus more on business model innovation and design innovation, and how to combine these innovations with existing technologies.
“Captain Hoffman” cited the iPhone as an example, believing that design innovation was the reason why Apple was able to “reinvent” the mobile phone, and even set a sales record for smart mobile phones in just two years. Because the meaning of design innovation is to solve real problems for users. Thinking about the advent and sales of iPhone, it is not difficult to figure this out.
In addition, the author of this book is not optimistic about the development of Bitcoin, not because the technological innovation of Bitcoin and blockchain is not good enough, but because no one wants to use Bitcoin to replace credit cards yet. Although Bitcoin’s technology is very novel, don’t think that technology is omnipotent and can bring unique advantages. He reminded us that we must be able to understand the real needs of consumers.
──I was particularly touched when I read this passage in 2018, when Bitcoin and blockchain are in the midst of a battle. The advent of new technologies is inevitably dazzling, but “technological omnipotence” does not always exist. The author also reminds us that we need to understand the real operation of the world.
Not only does he have a deep understanding of the technical field, the author also reminds many entrepreneurs to pay attention to changes in society, economy, politics and other aspects. After all, entrepreneurial teams cannot live in isolation, and the political and economic situation is as important as technology and capital, and they are all very critical factors.
And what is the most important factor for the success of new ventures? “Captain Hoffman“‘s answer is timing, because only doing the right thing at the right time is the most important. He also said emphatically: “The wave or trend itself is not important. If you miss this wave, there will always be another wave following. It is far better to pay attention to the next wave than to chase the wave that has passed.”
New technologies and waves such as robots, artificial intelligence, big data, and financial technology will continue to emerge. But although these waves or trends are attractive, they may not all be successfully realized. While these new technological civilizations are impacting and affecting people’s lives, we must not forget the meaning, value and mission of our existence.
“Captain Hoffman” encourages entrepreneurs to adapt to the current situation and trend instead of working hard against the current. I also believe that this passage should allow many entrepreneurs to reflect and gain a lot of spiritual growth and inspiration.
As the founder of Founders Space and the author of this book, Steven. Hoffman is not only committed to connecting and integrating global resources, but also training and guiding countless entrepreneurs from all over the world. This book “Let the Elephant Fly”, which brings together his entrepreneurial ideas and experience over the years, is undoubtedly the best entrepreneurial guide.
As we enter 2018, the entrepreneurial trend is still hot. Let us take this book “Let the Elephant Fly” and embark on the road to change ourselves and the world together!
