On the evening of March 8, I was invited by [Egye Talent Training] (http://www.egl-business.com.tw/), a subsidiary of Yingjie International Group, to hold a course called “[Introduction to Social Marketing] (https://www.accupass.com/event/1712201001409788587490)”, and explore the world of social marketing with nearly twenty students.

In this class, I will introduce you to how to start social marketing from three aspects. And, how to formulate strategies and set feasible measurement indicators. Includes:

  1. Understand social media and platform selection: By understanding the ecology and characteristics of social media, choose a platform that suits you or your company for development.

  2. Social marketing strategy formulation and planning: Master the structure and trends of social marketing, learn to formulate marketing strategies and plan event promotions.

  3. Appreciation and practice of social marketing cases: Appreciate excellent social marketing cases, start with learning and observation, and actually participate in practice.

At the beginning, I used the case of “Uncle Gangnam” PSY to break the topic and mentioned his song “[Gangnam”] Style](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08txvMoQff4)” MV took only fifty days to reach the astonishing achievement of over 100 million views. I thought this record was quite rare, but I didn’t expect that the MV for “Gentleman” released a few years later easily exceeded the 100 million mark in just four days! As you can imagine, in addition to PSY’s own high popularity, the contribution of social media cannot be underestimated!

I also shared with the students that in fact, community has existed from the moment people meet each other, and it does not only exist now. However, in recent years, many convenient information services and digital tools have emerged, making it easier for everyone to gather people with similar interests.

The existence of social media such as Facebook fan pages, Facebook groups or Instagram is not a blind pursuit of popularity, or is simply used by Facebook and other companies to pursue commercial interests. It is more conducive to individuals and companies from all over the world to convey their ideas, opinions and core values.

I also don’t forget to analyze these social media that are currently gaining momentum with you. What are the characteristics and advantages of each? In addition, I also share the characteristics of social marketing and how to formulate social marketing strategies. In the three-hour course, we not only dismantle the business methods of these well-known entrepreneurs, but also specifically point out the parts that can be learned and borrowed from. Since the members this time come from different industries (for example, some people run fan pages for companies and organizations, and some are considering running their own shopping websites), I also try my best to give a variety of diverse cases to share with you. Many students have asked me, now that there are multiple social media such as Facebook, LINE, and Instagram, how should I choose and match them? I don’t think there is a standard answer to this, but you can develop a social marketing strategy based on your industry attributes and needs.

Usually I would recommend that you use your official website or blog as the main axis, and then use it with other operations such as YouTube channel, e-newsletter, white paper, Facebook, Twitter or LINE. Through the high popularity of Facebook and Instagram, you can guide people back to your official website or blog (the so-called “home field”). You know, the official website or blog is often the most important contact point for a brand, so it is also suitable as the engine of social marketing.

Finally, I asked the students to practice in groups based on the theme of “Build Your Exclusive Community”. Each group can set a community theme they want to operate, lock in the main target audience and formulate a strategy to attract followers. They must also outline operational policies and consider monetization models.

It seems that although this exercise question only has five sub-questions, it implies various problems that will be encountered when running a community. I also use this opportunity to allow students who don’t know each other to brainstorm together. Sure enough, through group discussions, not only did everyone come up with many wonderful sparks, but also new inspirations and interesting ideas burst out in the classroom. What’s even better is that through practical exercises, students were able to see many aspects of social marketing, which also gave me the opportunity to teach and learn from each other, and thus learned a valuable lesson.
