The New Year holiday has just ended, and today should be the first day for many friends to return to work! The weather is not bad during this rare holiday. How are you all doing? Did you take a good rest or go for a walk outdoors?
Here, I would also like to express my special thanks to Alan and Lillian (opens in a new tab), the Xian couple, for treating me to dinner to celebrate my birthday. Their little Haohao, who is studying in the upper class, is so cute! I would also like to thank my teacher Cheryl (opens in a new tab) who lives in Miaoli for treating me to a Starbucks coffee via LINE. In addition, I also raised NT$3,000 in the birthday fundraising event I launched on Facebook for No Kid Hungry (opens in a new tab). I am really grateful to my friends for their donations.
By the way, I also want to thank my old friend Qin Zhenjia (opens in a new tab) for giving me the Moleskine notebook. Maybe because they know that I am running the “I love writing notes (opens in a new tab)” community, many friends like to give me notebooks and stationery in recent years… Well, this also reminds me of my article “[Is this idea a success?” )”, “Super Fan (opens in a new tab)”Pat Flynn (opens in a new tab)(Pat Flynn), who is also a well-known podcaster.
At the earliest, Pat Flynn (opens in a new tab) actually worked in the construction industry and also sold reference books for building license exams on the Internet. In December 2008, a netizen named Jieqi bought the LEED exam guide reference book compiled by him and passed the exam. She wrote a letter to express her gratitude. Jackie even expressed her hope that when she has the opportunity to visit California, she can treat Pat Flynn to a meal, which also makes him feel the power of a super fan.
Later, Pat Flynn quit his job in a construction company and started his own business. He not only wrote books but also offered many online courses. He generously shared his experience in starting a business and running a podcast program with everyone, so not only did he win a lot of fans, but many people also gave him related themed gift boxes because they knew he loved the “Back to the Future” series of movies.
On the road of running a community, I have just embarked on a journey, and naturally I cannot compare with Pat Flynn, who now has a strong fan base; however, while watching “Super Fan (opens in a new tab)》This book also inspired me a lot. There is no doubt that operating the community effectively and actively interacting with fans is also one of my new goals for the new year.
When it comes to new year’s goals, we have to mention another famous podcaster in the United States, who is also the author of “[The 4-hour work week](https://www.books.com.tw/exep/assp.php/vista/products/0010621037?utm_source=vista&utm_medium=ap-books&utm_content=recommend&utm_campaibest-sellingauthors[Timothy.Ferriss (opens in a new tab)](https://tim.blog)(Tim (opens in a new tab) Ferriss).
He said that he has not set new goals for the new year at the end of the year for several years, but instead uses a more valuable and actionable PYR (Past Year Review) method. Maybe you are as curious as me: Why does this well-known efficiency guru stop setting new goals for the new year in recent years?
He revealed (opens in a new tab) that on December 31, eight years ago, the young daughter of one of his mentors passed away due to cancer, which made him feel the impermanence of the world and the ruthless passage of time. Therefore, facing the precious time given by God, he hopes to spend it with beautiful people and things.
So, how do you start doing a “Year in Review” (PYR (opens in a new tab))? It’s very simple. At the beginning, you just need to prepare a piece of paper, sticky notes or notebooks, and write down in two columns the people and things that made you feel positive and negative every week in the past year.
Then, please regularly review the top 20% of people and things that will have the most positive effects on you, and arrange them on your calendar, such as studying, having dinner with friends, or participating in reading clubs and other activities. In addition, please also list the top 20% of people and things that make you feel deep and painful, and be careful not to repeat the same mistakes for any reason.
In my opinion, the core spirit of the PYR method is to arrange as early as possible those people and things that will fill you with positive energy to meet yourself.
As for whether you want to use sticky notes, paper, notebooks, or digital tools such as Notion and Evernote to record, that’s actually fine! After all, every tool has its designed purpose, and it is important to choose the right tool to use at the right time and occasion. We do not need to stick to a specific mindset or tool.
It’s important to know why, but it’s even more important to actually do it! Just like I have wanted to record a podcast for a long time, and I did a few episodes intermittently last year, but I still need to continue to accumulate step by step before I can see the results. So, although the quality of the recording is not ideal now, I think I’ll get started! Compared with writing, which I am familiar with, in the field of audio and video recording, I am still at the kindergarten level. I ask for your tolerance and support for this part!
As we welcome the new year 2022, I think we should all focus on the people and things that deserve the most attention and investment.亲爱的朋友,你是否愿意跟我一起试试PYR法呢?
