"The Little Voice of Vista": How to choose a notebook (the results of a survey of 9,000 people are revealed)

In today’s Podcast program, I want to talk to you about the topic “How to choose a notebook”. I know that many of my friends have the habit of writing notes, and they especially like to buy notebooks or journals to accompany themselves at the beginning of the new year. So, how should we choose a notebook?
For me, I can start writing whenever I have inspiration, as long as I get paper or sticky notes, but I still take some time to choose a notebook that suits me. Considering the convenience of recording and carrying, I will pay special attention to the paper quality, inner page style and size of the notebook.
Also because I run the Facebook group “I Love Writing Notes”, I often have the opportunity to come into contact with various types of notebooks. Starting in 2021, I have launched a [questionnaire] (https://www.surveycake.com/s/1dnY1) in the “I Love Writing Notes” Facebook group. I want to understand everyone’s preferences for using notebooks, and I also hope that one day I can design an ideal notebook suitable for use by group partners.
I originally only expected to receive 3,000 questionnaires, but I didn’t expect that the New Year holiday has just ended, and more than 9,000 friends have already responded. I think this should be the largest notebook survey in Taiwan in recent times, right? Well, are you as curious as I am about the results of this survey? Now, let us take a look!

At the beginning, I asked you what kind of notebook page format you like? I originally thought that most people would choose the horizontal line style, but I didn’t expect that the square style would be favored by the most friends.
As for the notebook size that everyone likes, I guessed it right! Most people choose the A5 size, followed by the A4 size, and the third ranked B5 size. As for the number of pages in the notebook, everyone’s favorite is the loose-leaf extraction method, followed by 60 pages and 100 pages.
I’m also curious what kind of pen do you usually use to write notes? Sure enough, ball pens, which are convenient and easy to obtain, are the most popular, followed by pencils, colored pens and fountain pens. In addition, erase pens are also very popular. I wonder if this is related to the fact that there are many elementary and high school students in our club?
As for the choice between paper notes and digital notes, everyone still prefers to record using paper. However, as many as 45% of my friends said they use both paper and digital notes, which shows that the method and convenience of digital notes are gradually being recognized by people.
Regarding notebook purchasing preferences, I would like to know if you have any specific brand preferences? As many as 81.7% of my friends said that the brand of laptop is not fixed and they will use it differently. On the other hand, only 17% of people use a fixed brand and type of notes, which is a bit surprising to me!
Regarding the binding method of notebooks, loose-leaf accounts for 50.6% of the total, which is not difficult to imagine. Next in order are hard leather wire binding, non-hard leather plastic binding and steel rings.
In addition, when purchasing a notebook, what factors do you pay most attention to? The top three are: paper, flat writing and inner page design, but the price actually falls to the fourth place. It is obvious that consumers still pay more attention to quality when purchasing notebooks. Of course, I guess this is also related to the fact that everyone usually uses different laptops, right?
If you have a habit of supporting a specific brand, you may have to spend a little more money to purchase a new notebook! For example, some of my friends are loyal fans of MOLESKINE, and they prepare a special budget to purchase notebooks every year.
For friends who like to write notes, what problems are troubling them? This question is also the part I particularly want to know about. From the results of the questionnaire, we can know that the following are: handwriting showing through the page, handwriting blurring, poor binding, difficult to save or store, too soft paper and too hard paper.
As for the last question, I would like to ask you out of curiosity: If the “I Love Writing Notes” community wants to create an ideal notebook in the future, which styles of notebooks will be favored? The results of the questionnaire were also beyond my expectation. I originally thought it would be the traditional note-taking style, or the popular Bullet Notes, [Cornell Notes](https://www.managerto day.com.tw/articles/view/53679) or Mandala Thinking Notes and other styles. Unexpectedly, the reading note style has become the most popular! Does this mean that our little chalks all believe in reading and love reading?
In addition to the style of reading notes, everyone’s second favorite is the style of travel notes. The third favorite is [Bullet Journaling] (https://www.managertoday.com.tw/books/view/57100), which has been popular for a while in the past few years. As for the more traditional notebooks that also have function-oriented weekly calendar styles or today’s calendar styles, the rankings are in the middle… Well, obviously this style has not received much recognition. Thinking about it from another angle, maybe it’s because there are so many notebooks of this type that they are usually easier to obtain, right?
Thanks to more than 9,000 little chalkers for their enthusiastic responses, which helped me better understand everyone’s needs and practical thoughts about notebooks.
