It’s the Dragon Boat Festival. Although there is obviously no festive atmosphere this year due to the epidemic, we can’t help but wish everyone a happy Dragon Boat Festival! Of course, delicious rice dumplings are very high in calories, so it is recommended that you only try a small amount and don’t eat too much in one go, lest you realize you have put on weight again after the festival.
Today I continued the project of “Talk with Vista” and made an appointment with a veterinarian friend named Andy to talk. This friend took the e-commerce product copywriting course I taught at Taipei City Knowledge Academy last year. He said that after taking the class, he would think of what I taught whenever he had to write copy!
Talking about the topic of chatting with me this time, Andy mainly wanted to ask about submission. Andy told me that he wanted to submit the articles he published on his blog to the media. However, since I have never submitted an article before, I would like to know how to make it easier to succeed? Also, I would like to ask if there is anything else I need to pay attention to?
Continuously producing content is the first step
I first read his blog, and there are indeed some professional articles on cat care. I think that being able to continuously produce content is a good first step towards external exposure! I usually encourage everyone to observe more and create more, but the same is true.
Submission is indeed an art, but I think you should first understand your motivations? Ask yourself, you are just playing with voting, do you want to try the fun of submitting? Or do you want to make a living by writing, or even realize your dream of becoming a writer? Well, basically these are two different things!
So, I suggest Andy, a veterinarian, to “begin with the end in mind” and think clearly about why you want to submit an article? Do you simply want to share information about pet care with everyone? Or do you hope to expand your popularity and influence?
The so-called “plan before taking action” means that after you have thoroughly thought about what you want to achieve, you will naturally know what to do. I also suggested that he do some homework first. He could do some research on the current Taiwanese or Chinese-speaking media (traditional media, online media, new media, etc.) to see which media pay special attention to pet issues or solicit relevant manuscripts from the outside.
Suggestions for mastering the right to serve media issues
William J. Holstein, author of “Managing the media: Don’t Let the Media Manage You”, once provided the following three suggestions on how corporate CEOs can control media issues:
- Integrate communication talents into corporate strategies.
- Control the direction of the story.
- Embrace online media.
I think friends who want to submit articles to the media can also refer to these three suggestions. So, I also suggest that Andy, in addition to using his expertise as a veterinarian, should also learn how to communicate and tell a good story? Even more, you have to keep abreast of current events, festivals, etc., in order to be able to gain insight and write articles that the media will be interested in.
Writing good articles is not enough. Sometimes we have to be brave enough to knock on the media’s door. In addition to traditional media, emerging media such as blogs, social media, and portals are naturally channels that cannot be ignored.
Find a suitable submission platform
Each media or website has different attributes and tonality, and each readership has its own characteristics, so it is important to find a suitable submission platform. Do not be superstitious about mainstream media or websites with high traffic. In this way, the submitted articles can be seen by the correct group of people and maximize their value. In addition, I also suggested that he read articles written by others. In addition to appreciating their narrative techniques and angles, he could also learn from them and think about what market segmentation he should make.
