This afternoon, I am very happy to attend the First Summit hosted by the Book Fans Alliance. So far, more than fifty book club organizations have joined the Book Fans Alliance, making it one of the largest book club communities in Taiwan.
The Book Fan Alliance adopts the operating method of “online alliance model, offline theme independence”, allowing everyone to give full play to each other, learn from each other, observe each other’s examples, and jointly exert the Medici Effect across borders to start the Renaissance in the Internet era!
As soon as I arrived at the venue, I saw many old and new friends. The stylist Sister Jin happened to be sitting next to me, and the owner of Zhongshan 15 Lecture Hall Qian Pei was sitting behind me. There was even a friend named Ding Qianqian who came all the way from Beijing to participate in the anniversary celebration of the Book Fans Alliance.
After a brief speech by the book fan alliance leader Hank, the event was kicked off by Ben (former general manager of Zhongxin Company Wang Xingwei) of the MeCompany Reading Club. He mentioned his original motivation for setting up a book club, and also shared the ups and downs of holding events. As someone who also runs a book club, I felt the same way. But after listening to his sharing, I admired him even more for hosting two hundred live broadcasts in one year. Well, this is really not easy!

Amy shared with everyone her experience in running a book club, and how she not only spent a lot of time organizing these activities, but also went through a nerve-wracking process over issues such as too few attendees and refunds. She finally figured out a solution that could not only reduce her own burden but also meet everyone’s needs. She changed the book club into a book chat club to create distinction and characteristics.

The main focus of the so-called “Book Chat Club” is to enhance the fun of reading, sharing and thinking. It breaks away from the previous book club method and uses the content of the book as the starting point for chatting to extend life or work and study. It uses a simple structure to help everyone communicate and interact easily. For example, she will find a unique cafe to host the event based on the theme of each book selection, and even invite the boss or management team to share, which feels pretty cool!

After that, Hank and Monica, the leader of New Internet Celebrity Reading Club, will share their experience in organizing reading clubs on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. Hank mentioned that both sides of the Taiwan Strait and the three places have triggered “knowledge panic” in the past two or three years. He has also hosted nearly 80 reading meetings.
Hank also shared with you the tidbits of events held in the past at well-known companies such as Baidu and China Telecom. He believes that the attitude of the person in charge is very important for the corporate reading clubs that have become popular in recent years to be effective. Monica also shared with everyone her experience of holding a book club in Xiamen. She used different methods to host each time, just hoping to attract the attention of the participants!

Monica is also very proud that in the reading club, she not only leads everyone to finish reading the book, but also improves herself through hands-on practice, so that every partner can come away with a fulfilling experience. It also uses the “WAC model” in the book to lead everyone to practice. In other words, as long as you are aware of your usual communication patterns, you can easily use “WAC Pattern” to change the quality of your communication with others.
Establish a “WAC model” of oral communication: clarify the actual situation that troubles you (What), make a request for improvement (Ask), and confirm that the other party accepts and understands your request (Check in).
At the same time, the two gang leaders also used UMU to interact with friends at the scene. I hope everyone can share their experience of participating in today’s event. This trick is really effective. Not only is it fun, but it also helps everyone get more involved in the activity.

General Manager Huang of Chengbang Publishing mentioned the depression in the publishing industry. The average number of new books printed has dropped rapidly from 5,000 to 2,000 now. Faced with the industry’s predicament, the only way to turn the corner is by changing our thinking. The thinking of traditional publishers may focus on the carrier of paper books, but with the evolution of the times, a lot of content can be read through mobile phones, tablets and other mobile devices, so the possibilities for content management are actually infinite.
From a publisher to a content operator, everyone must know why readers need this book? Publishers have the responsibility to determine how big the basic market is for books of this size? Only by locking in the key core markets and understanding the extended benefits and problems that need to be actively faced can books be turned into valuable, monetizable and attractive content. And all of this is the publisher’s responsibility.
Director Wang from Tianxia Magazine believes that the book club is indeed a very interesting activity. She also shared with everyone that the publishing of Tianxia Magazine is actually from a media perspective, so it is slightly different from ordinary publishing houses. She believes that the development of the publishing industry may not be really unsatisfactory. Although the output value has shrunk, the performance of Tianxia Magazine Publishing has continued to grow, which obviously depends on human efforts. But looking at it from another perspective, publishing houses do need to keep pace with the times and can no longer stick to old rules.
The philosophy of Tianxia Magazine is “For a better society”, and the philosophy of Tianxia Magazine is “For better ideas and practices”. Therefore, they have hoped to provide everyone with more perspectives from the beginning. Therefore, you must have a unique strategy when selecting books, especially in the two major categories of book publishing: business and spirituality. They are not only the areas you are good at, but also the categories most favored by readers.
In the process of developing the knowledge economy within the company, Director Wang is not only responsible for marketing, staff and other tasks. Director Zhao has always encouraged everyone that if we want to change the situation of “publishing is in danger”, we must better understand the needs and ideas of authors and readers, and we must also be able to adapt to the current situation and think from other people’s perspective. He also mentioned that publishing houses spent more effort in the past to serve bookstores, but next they should focus on authors and readers.
After participating in today’s Book Fan Alliance’s first gang leader summit, I gained a lot. If I think about it carefully, I feel that life is difficult, but also very simple. The difficult thing is that your thoughts and behavior patterns have been unknowingly affected by the environment and become rigid, but the simple thing is that it is not difficult to change if you want to.
