🔑A team, or even a company, is like a symphony orchestra. Only by complementing each other and resonating with each other can we interweave rich music.
In the rapidly changing Internet field, the four companies known as the “Four Horsemen”: Amazon, Google, Apple, and Facebook are huge in scale, but they can continue to evolve and lead the trend. What supports these giant companies from being washed away by the tide of the times is the leadership philosophy behind them. Well-known ones include “Lean Entrepreneurship”, “Lean Execution”, “Agile Development”, “Growth Hacking”, “OKR” and “Kanban”, etc. This time we will not discuss these methodologies in detail, but let’s start with the leadership style of the Four Horsemen!
Even if the founder has a vision, he still needs to rely on the execution of his employees. Amazon has grown from just a dozen founders to nearly 650,000 employees worldwide. In other words, the “ultimate service” emphasized by Bezos must be implemented into management policies and become everyone’s way of working.
In the early days, Bezos wrote down several major principles on the whiteboard in the conference room, including customer obsession, frugality and ownership.
He posted these slogans on the walls of the company and logistics centers, and gradually added values to form the current 14 Amazon Leadership Principles (OLP, Our Leadership Principles), which serve as a reference for employees to act.
Pichai believes that the important task of a leader is not to prove how good he is, but to ensure that there are many outstanding talents under him who can stand alone.
Leading a company with more than 60,000 employees, if you want to get things done, you have to rely on other leaders. “The most common thing I do is learn to delegate, give them the space they need, and trust my team.”
“Making others successful is my belief and what I should do,” Pichai believes that his most important job is not to show his talents, but to “overcome obstacles for others, remove obstacles, and be the one who opens the way.”
After Cook took office in 2011, Apple encountered many serious challenges. In 2012, ABC’s Nightline special and an investigative report published by The New York Times on working conditions at Foxconn cast a dark shadow over Apple. Critics say Apple is indifferent to Foxconn’s labor conditions.
At a subsequent Goldman Sachs meeting, Cook bluntly responded to accusations of worker abuse in Apple’s supply chain and promised to remove suppliers who did not care about labor rights and address them. Apple has identified 360 “remedial action guidelines” covering matters that need to be corrected such as worker safety, compensation and working environment, and has implemented 284 items in advance.
“In his first year as CEO, Cook made more improvements in supplier responsibility than Steve Jobs did in his entire tenure. Brands are gradually realizing that a strong sense of ethics and core values are no longer ‘icing on the cake’ but an indispensable thing.”
If you are moving forward on one road and find that your heart belongs to someone else, then please find your own way to reach the other side of your ideal. If you don’t succeed once, keep trying. Until you find work that ignites your passion and is meaningful to yourself and others.
I now often ask my colleagues, “What can I do better?” I am always grateful to those who dare to tell me the truth and praise them in public. I am a firm believer that you can be your best leader only when you work side by side with your colleagues, and when you not only direct but also listen.
But great leaders require more than complete obedience. What they want is to inspire enthusiasm, complete trust and true professionalism in their employees. They don’t just want to gain the team’s brains, they want to win their hearts.
