Because I am a career lecturer and business consultant, people contact me almost every day through various channels such as email, blogs, or social media (Facebook or LINE), hoping that I can provide some assistance or advice.

To put it bluntly, although today I want to share with you how to ask questions and seek help, I am a guy who doesn’t like to trouble others. However, perhaps because of this reason, I am more qualified to talk to you - how should we ask questions or seek help from others?

Although I don’t like to trouble others, I also encourage everyone to have the courage to ask questions or seek help when necessary, and never hide alone. As Britain’s Prince Harry said when he visited Australia last year: “Having the courage to ask for help when you need it is also part of being strong and strong. Never suffer in silence, this is about all of you.”

Think how you’d feel if the tables were turned. If a friend were in your shoes and asked you for help…Most likely, you’d feel flattered and happy to pitch in.

While I encourage everyone to seek help from others, I have also found that many people ask questions that are very general or one-sided, or they tend to ask questions that can easily be answered on Google. You should know that it is often difficult for others to provide us with specific or useful suggestions without providing sufficient clues or background information.

On the other hand, if you keep asking too basic questions, you’re just wasting other people’s time.

To be honest, I often spend a lot of time trying to identify the real problem for no reason. Looking back now, I am not afraid of complex or difficult problems, but it is the problems that are not clearly defined, or the issues that make it difficult for me to think about how to help, that cause me a lot of headaches. Sometimes, even the main things have to be put aside… Oops, it’s quite inefficient now that I think about it!

It is true that when we need help from others, we should take the initiative to seek help. However, I would also like to suggest that you take three steps: The first step is to filter your own problems or clarify the direction in which you need assistance. Next, you should learn to “put yourself in someone else’s shoes” and think about how you can help or provide solutions from others’ perspective. After completing the above two steps, I believe you should have thought about the problem thoroughly and clearly. At this point, it’s not too late to ask questions or ask for help!

In other words, if you cannot explain the problem clearly, or focus the request for assistance on a single aspect, it will be difficult for others to provide specific and effective suggestions, let alone give answers. Please keep in mind that the questions you ask should not be all-encompassing. If you want to ask others for help, please try to focus on a limited area. This way, the other person can better utilize his expertise and provide some specific suggestions or feedback from his perspective.

Of course, I have also encountered friends who were very rude and asked me for help, or asked some junior high school-level questions… Well, if I encounter such a situation, I am usually not willing to deal with it. After all, everyone is busy taking care of their own work and life. We must know that it is just a courtesy to be willing to answer your questions, and it is our duty not to help you.

So if anyone is willing to answer your questions, we would really appreciate it. In order to avoid causing trouble to friends and teachers, let’s start by “asking the right questions”! Of course, we must remember to be polite and don’t think that relatives, friends, and teachers must lend a helping hand. After all, the earth does not revolve around you and me alone. This basic common sense must be understood first!
