Speaking of online teaching, I am not too unfamiliar. This is because a few years ago, I offered online courses on platforms such as hahow. Before the epidemic spread, I also switched to online teaching in response to various needs of enterprises, schools or public departments.
As the domestic COVID-19 epidemic worsens after mid-May, many physical courses must be changed to online courses. Naturally, it is even more necessary to improve various skills related to online teaching! I was fortunate enough to participate in the “Online Teaching Technology” online course hosted by Wang Yongfu this morning, and I felt that I gained a lot!
A total of 353 friends who love learning participated in this course. My biggest impression is what Brother Fu said: “minimize information needs and maximize teaching effects.” I can completely agree with this statement, because due to the limitations of the Internet environment, if too many information tools are used, it may destroy the rhythm of teaching and even affect the overall quality of teaching.
Fu Ge pointed out that even teaching briefings need to be re-examined and designed. When I was teaching, I also discovered that the traditional animations we are used to presenting on the Internet are not ideal. It is best to simplify them as much as possible, and each slide only talks about one key point.
Changhua Normal University Copywriting Workshop
This also reminds me of this Friday afternoon, I was invited to hold a copywriting workshop at the National Changhua Normal University, teaching 70 future teachers through Google Meet, and teaching everyone the skills of [copywriting] (https://www.writing.cool/2021/04/ourtheatre.html).
When class time came, the staff asked everyone to turn on their cameras and said they wanted to “take” a group photo. I also found it very refreshing. I took the opportunity to look at these young faces and recorded their appearance in my mind.

After class, I felt a little tired.
To be honest, giving lectures is not too difficult for me, not to mention the topics I talk about are familiar. However, when teaching through a screen, I cannot see everyone’s expressions, and it is difficult to have a more direct and in-depth interaction. Naturally, I spend more effort on communication. In addition, while I was teaching, it was raining heavily outside the window, so I had to raise my voice from time to time for fear that everyone could not hear clearly…
Fortunately, the students listened attentively to the lectures. Although they could not grasp everyone’s learning status in real time, they communicated through the text chat room and the atmosphere was quite warm. I was originally a little worried that I wouldn’t be able to successfully complete the practical exercises. Later, when I asked everyone to practice the questions, I also saw some creative copywriting, which made me want to applaud!
##Interactive skills for online teaching
Two days ago, I encountered some problems while conducting online teaching for Changhua Normal University. Now I have gained some inspiration from Brother Fu’s explanation, and I think I should be able to find a solution. For example, in addition to relying on text chat room interaction, you can also ask everyone to open the camera and conduct teaching interaction through pictures, actions, etc. In addition, making good use of pen and paper is also a good way to communicate.
We all hope that the epidemic will be brought under control soon so that everyone’s lives can get back on track and calm as soon as possible. However, it is conceivable that distance teaching will become more and more popular in the future, and even become a new normal.
Former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill once famously said: “Never let a good crisis go to waste!” Regardless of whether your job involves training or teaching, I think it is best for everyone to take the opportunity to become familiar with the concepts and techniques of online teaching.
Having said that, although the essence of teaching is similar, if you want to move learning activities online, you still have to consider many links and the cooperation of software and hardware environments. What is more important is preparation before class, and knowing how to choose and focus.
